Why Leonardo DiCaprio’s Career Hinges On Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Leonardo DiCaprio stands today at a moment in his life that feels like a turning point, the kind of moment that decides whether the legend of an actor will remain untouchable or begin to fade into memory. Born in Los Angeles and sculpted by an industry that once crowned him its golden boy, he rose from Titanic’s impossible scale to the pinnacle of Hollywood stardom.
Worldwide, millions of people were persuaded there was no actor of his generation who carried more heft, no player who could so perfectly blend the popular and the artful.

When asked to mention iconic and legendary actors, there are very few lists that would not include the cinema giant that is Jack Nicholson. From his terrifying turn as Jack Torrence in The Shining, to the heartfelt charm of As Good As It Gets, the actor was a dominant presence in cinema for over 50 years before he “retired” from the industry in 2010 – but could we see Nicholson return to screens for one more movie? One of his long-term collaborators certainly isn’t ruling it out.
Having not starred in a movie since 2010’s How Do You Know, many people assumed that Nicholson had quietly called time on his career and...

From Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver to Woody Allen’s Match Point, some of the most unforgettable movies out there owe a quiet debt to Fyodor Dostoevsky. Sure, you won’t see his name plastered across the posters, but his vibe is all over Hollywood.
The Russian master’s favorite playgrounds, guilt, obsession, morality, faith, and the messy duality of human nature, translate almost too perfectly to the screen. Think about it: loners spiraling in New York streets, killers convinced they’ve outsmarted morality, families torn apart by power and betrayal. That’s Dostoevsky, but with sharper suits and slicker cinematography.

Martin Scorsese isn’t just one of the greatest filmmakers alive; he’s the guy who defines what great filmmaking even looks like. For over five decades, the New Yorker has been giving us everything from the gritty streets of Mean Streets and Taxi Driver to the slick chaos of Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Across his career, Scorsese has collected dozens of accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Director for The Departed (2006), a Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award, and the AFI Life Achievement Award. But beyond the awards, Scorsese’s movies just feel bigger. They’ve got that mix of raw intensity, moral questions, unforgettable characters,...

When The Departed hit theaters in 2006, it didn't just become a box office success; it became a modern crime classic, and now Mark Wahlberg is set to reunite with his co-star in a new movie. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Departed won a total of four Academy Awards and has one of the most stacked casts of the 2000s.
The Boston-set crime thriller film features Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and Wahlberg, who earned an Oscar nomination for his scene-stealing role as the sharp-tongued Sgt. Dignam. Another standout actor in the 2006 film is Vera Farmiga, who plays Madolyn, a police psychologist caught in the crossfire between DiCaprio and Damon's characters.

Matt Damon has long been recognized as one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. His debut came in Mystic Pizza (1988), but his breakthrough arrived nearly a decade later with Good Will Hunting (1997), co-written with Ben Affleck. The film's success, crowned by an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, launched him into stardom.
Building on this momentum, Damon quickly established himself as a versatile leading man. He delivered a chilling performance in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), embodied action hero Jason Bourne in a franchise that reshaped the genre, and charmed audiences as Linus Caldwell in the Ocean's trilogy, securing his place among Hollywood's most reliable draws.

Looking back over his long career, Winstone said he feels the film industry has “become a business.” He talked about the difference between blockbuster movies like Marvel films and what he calls “cultural films.” “It’s all about selling tickets,” Winstone said.
“We see what’s happening in Hollywood with Marvel and all that kind of stuff… There is room for it, and it’s fun, but it takes away from getting cultural films made, which are best for the actors, [and] are really good acting parts. It’s getting more and more difficult to do that. If you’re not on social media now, they might not even consider you for a movie because they want a fanbase to come with that.

Ray Winstone used his Sarajevo Film Festival masterclass to reflect on a career shaped by collaborators such as Gary Oldman and Martin Scorsese while urging the British industry to back “culturally British” films and stem the talent drain to Hollywood. The appearance coincides with the 31st edition of the festival honoring Winstone with its Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, alongside fellow recipients including Willem Dafoe and Stellan Skarsgård.
Festival materials spotlight Winstone’s pivotal turns in Oldman’s Nil by Mouth and Scorsese’s The Departed, credits he cited as touchstones for a career that has spanned studio fare and intimate dramas. In Sarajevo, organizers framed the tribute as recognition of “honesty and intensity that resonate beyond the screen,” positioning the actor as a bridge between commercial hits and the kind of grounded storytelling he says the U.K. should prioritize.

Matt Damon's best story idea led to his worst decision as an actor.
Damon has received two Academy Award nominations for Best Actor (one for "Good Will Hunting" and the other for "The Martian") and another for Best Supporting Actor (in "Invictus"), and was never seriously in the running to win any of them. Damon has it in him to win an acting Oscar, and may one day find the role that pulls together all of the peculiar, yet photogenic qualities that make him such a watchable actor.
Damon does have an Oscar, however, and it's for co-writing "Good Will Hunting" with Ben Affleck. He could've won a second Original Screenplay Oscar years later for "Manchester by the Sea," but he made two artistically astute decisions that ensured he'd have only one shot at taking home an Academy Award for this particular project.

Ahead of David Fincher and Brad Pitt‘s upcoming spin-off, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, Quentin Tarantino declared his support for the Fight Club director. In a lengthy 2-hour interview on The Church of Tarantino podcast, Qt revealed:

The Adventures of Cliff Booth is set to be based on Brad Pitt’s Oscar-winning role in the 2019 film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Across two decades, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have made six feature films together, joining forces for the storm-tossed streets of Gangs of New York (2002), the vertiginous heights of The Aviator (2004), the moral maelstrom of The Departed (2006), the fever dream of Shutter Island (2010), the manic opulence of The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and the elegiac sweep of Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).
Together, they have conjured worlds both grand and intimate, as their canvas stretches across historical epics, biopics, crime sagas, thrillers, comedies, and westerns, each crowned by critical acclaim. Their partnership has not only courted awards, garnering 31 Oscar nominations and nine wins, but has captivated audiences to the tune of $1.3 billion at the box office. Netflix‘s August film slate includes originals like “My Oxford Year,” “The Thursday Murder Club” and “Fixed.” Those are not the streaming service’s only new additions this month, though. Netflix has also added a diverse batch of existing film classics to its library in August, including the hangout comedy to end all hangout comedies and the movie that finally landed one of Hollywood’s greatest directors his first, long overdue Oscar.

“Clueless,” director Amy Heckerling’s clever, endlessly quotable adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma,” is one of the most beloved comedies of the 1990s for a reason. Set in mid-’90s Southern California, the film features a host of memorable performances — namely, those given by its three female leads, Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash and Brittany Murphy.

Leonardo DiCaprio has worked on countless modern classics with many of the biggest filmmakers of the past half-century. But when he’s looking to rewatch one of his films, one stands out above the rest: “The Aviator.”
In a wide-ranging conversation with his “One Battle After Another” director Paul Thomas Anderson published in Esquire, DiCaprio was asked whether he ever revisits his filmography. The Oscar winner explained that while he seldom watches his own movies he has a soft spot for Martin Scorsese’s 2004 Howard Hughes biopic. He cited his involvement in the film’s development process as evidence that he had truly arrived in the industry and was able to actively participate in his projects, rather than just being hired to support someone else’s vision.
“I rarely watch any of my films, but if I’m being honest, there’s one that I have watched more than others.

Academy Award-winning star Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed which high-profile project he regrets not participating in. While he's been known for staying away from franchises, he's rarely talked about the roles he regrets passing on, regardless of the reason. In a recent interview, the Inception actor says the only movie he regrets not doing is the epic about the adult film industry starring Mark Wahlberg, Boogie Nights.
Perhaps DiCaprio's pick for biggest regret was influenced by the person who was interviewing him. The Killers of the Flower Moon performer recently sat down to chat with famed director Paul Thomas Anderson in a piece published by Esquire magazine. Anderson, the director of Boogie Nights as well as DiCaprio's upcoming film One Battle After Another, began the interview by asking the star if he had any regrets. The actor's answer was the following:
"I'll say it even though you're here: My biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights.

Back in 2019, Martin Scorsese set the internet on fire when he told Empire (via IndieWire) that Marvel movies are “not cinema,” comparing them to theme parks rather than films that dive into human emotions. His comments sparked major debate online but later subsided. However, years later, now that Apple TV is producing a documentary about Scorsese, there seems to be a chance for him to unpack those thoughts in detail.
Mr. Scorsese, a five-part documentary series on the legendary filmmaker’s life and career, is currently developing under Apple TV+, which promises an inside look at the acclaimed director’s creative journey. Meanwhile, we believe there’s a massive opportunity for the streamer to revisit Scorsese’s most headline-making moments, which undoubtedly include the Marvel controversy.

"Actor" might not be the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Martin Scorsese. However, the award-winning filmmaker has recently begun to take on more acting roles and a first look at his next one has just been revealed.
DiscussingFilm has shared on X an image of Scorsese from the upcoming drama film, In the Hand of Dante, an adaptation of Nick Tosches' 2002 novel of the same name. The filmmaker looks unrecognizable in his role as Dante Alighieri's mentor, sporting long gray hair and a thick, bushy beard. A lot of the replies on the social media post have pointed out that Scorsese looks unmistakably like Dumbledore from Harry Potter or Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings, both of whom also sport gray hair and a long beard.

Although Martin Scorsese is perhaps most notable for his crime films, another theme he likes to explore is religion. Raised in a predominantly Catholic environment, religion influenced his sense of craft, with "Mean Streets," "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas, "Casino," and "The Departed," among others, featuring characters grappling with their religious convictions. However, some of Scorsese's movies have explored spirituality on a deeper level, among them "The Last Temptation of Christ," "Kundun," and his underrated 2016 drama "Silence."
Based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Japanese author Shūsaku Endō, "Silence" is set in the 17th century and follows two Jesuit priests, Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver), as they travel from Portugal to Japan to find their mentor, Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Neeson), while spreading Christianity throughout the region. A longtime passion project for Scorsese, this film was his follow-up to perhaps his most profane and explicit movie,...

Netflix has no lack of great crime movies for those looking for a great story about smash-and-grab robberies, lifetime criminals or even thieving magicians. Below, we’ve put together a curated list of some of the best crime movies on Netflix right now, ranging from Oscar-winning dramas to underseen indies and beyond. There’s a little something for everyone, which speaks to the diversity of stories inside the crime genre.
The Departed Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon in “The Departed” (Warner Bros. Pictures)
Despite being the man behind classics like “Raging Bull,” “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy,” Martin Scorsese didn’t win his first Oscar until 2006’s “The Departed,” a fairly straightforward crime thriller with tremendous commercial appeal. That’s not to ding “The Departed” – the movie’s a rich and wildly entertaining crime saga – but it was surprising that it was this film that finally netted Scorsese the trophy.

In June of 2025, The New York Times released an ambitious list chronicling the best movies released since January 1, 2000 — marking the best 100 movies of the 21st century so far. If you're familiar with great films from the past 25 years, you're probably not all that surprised that the 2007 best picture winner at the Academy Awards, "The Departed," which stars Matt Damon and a whole host of other A-list performers, is on the list. In fact, it's number 31 on the ranking.
"The cat-and-rat gangster picture that finally won Martin Scorsese his Oscar happens to be one of the most downright entertaining of the century," the outlet writes, acknowledging the frankly ridiculous fact that Scorsese hadn't won an Oscar for directing before that same ceremony in 2007. "Scorsese takes the Hong Kong flick 'Infernal Affairs' and plops it in Boston, Dropkick Murphys soundtrack and all," the reasoning for the ranking continues before shouting out the movie's unbelievable cast.

Eddie Murphy is defending his 2007 comedy Norbit, 18 years later.
The actor-comedian was the top contender for the best supporting actor Oscar following his 2006 performance in Dreamgirls, though it’s been long believed that he lost out on the award after Norbit released in 2007. Although it’s commonly assumed that the comedy snuffed out his Oscars campaign, Murphy doesn’t agree with that sentiment.
“I love Norbit. Norbit came out right after I got that Oscar nomination,” he told Complex. “There were articles like, ‘How can he get an Oscar, he did this?’ They’re two different movies.”
The Beverly Hills Cop lead stood ten toes down for the film, which he notably wrote alongside his brother, Charlie Murphy. He continued, “I wrote Norbit with my brother, Charlie, and we think Norbit is funny. Here’s the thing with Norbit — it came out and they gave me Razzie Awards for worst actress,...

Derrick Kardos, a graphic designer on films including Jonathan Demme’s The Manchurian Candidate, Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Ridley Scott’s American Gangster and Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, has died. He was 53.
Kardos died July 18 in Carteret, New Jersey, of complications from Long Covid, his family announced.
Kardos got his start in show business as an assistant for Christine Vachon, and the producer and founder of Killer Films wrote on Facebook that he “was a giant part of Killer’s roots and a wholly unique human being.”
He also was mentored by production designer Thérèse de Prez, with whom he collaborated on many movies, from Stonewall (1995), Arlington Road (1999), Summer of Sam (1999) and High Fidelity (2000) to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), American Splendor (2003), Black Swan (2010) and Premium Rush (2012).

Netflix won the streaming wars long ago and now boasts 300 million subscribers worldwide. But its massive success has come at a cost -- namely, anyone looking to criticize the streaming age (and there is a lot to criticize) will highlight Netflix as one of the chief architects of our current moment, in which we find ourselves surrounded by a homogenous gloop of generic streaming movies and series. To be sure, Netflix has been largely responsible for this state of affairs simply by virtue of being the first and biggest streamer in the game. Still, it's not entirely fair to dismiss the company and its vast catalog of media outright.
For one thing, amid the never-ending waves of "content," the streamer is also delivering some truly great TV shows. Take "Adolescence," for example, which is one of the best Netflix originals ever. This mini-series comprises four episodes that were each shot in one continuous take.

The sole interesting factor is the actor. Vijay Deverakonda’s look for his infiltrator’s character is fascinating in its possibilities. He looks lean mean forlorn and unforgiving. He is at once the perpetrator and the victim. A wanderer and a messiah.
This is all on paper. And I wonder how hard the actor worked on looking the part. That done, it must have felt like being all dressed with nowhere to go.
For looks alone, Deverakonda gets full marks in a film which is otherwise as hollow as a container of cola without any fizz. Kingdom is not only a waste of Deverakonda’s talent, but also a colossal waste of everyone’s time. Including the audiences.
What is the purpose of its existence, besides making its leading man look messianic in every frame? Deverakonda plays a wound-up tense police constable who at the end of this 2 hours 40 minutes of numbing nihility,...

The pilot episode of “The Studio” has perhaps its greatest cameo by a real-life Hollywood personality — none other than the auteur filmmaker himself, Martin Scorsese. In the extended guest appearance, the director is brought on to be the director for a “Kool-Aid” movie… although his version (a supposed passion project for the man behind “Raging Bull”) will actually be the story of Jim Jones’ notorious Jonestown massacre. He ends up getting fired, which offends Scorsese and every other major star in town, and at the end of the episode Seth Rogen and Ike Barinholtz’s studio mogul characters get kicked out of an exclusive Charlize Theron-hosted party.
Throwing Scorsese into a role that requires him to poke fun at his own persona, though, was a gamble — at least emotionally — for Rogen, who also co-wrote and co-directed the episode.

Was Robert De Niro The Reason Why Leonardo DiCaprio Became Martin Scorsese’s Go-To Star? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
Leonardo DiCaprio did not just walk into Martin Scorsese’s world with his signature smirk and baby face. He arrived after being recommended by the guy he would unofficially replace. Robert De Niro, the man who once was Scorsese’s entire leading man playlist, handed over the baton like a godfather giving away his best pair of shoes.
After years of one iconic collaboration after another, De Niro casually dropped a line to Scorsese about some young actor he had just worked with and a man who he said was good. It was nothing more than that from De Niro’s side, certainly not a pitch but maybe just a nudge.
Martin Scorsese recalled the moment during a Q&a at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (per Far Out Magazine). “Robert De Niro told me,...

Martin Scorsese recently earned an Emmy nomination for his guest performance in The Studio, but nearly 20 years ago, he directed an iconic crime thriller that’s finally back on streaming. Scorsese teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) and Matt Damon (The Martian) for The Departed, the 2006 gangster drama following an undercover cop and a mole in the police who attempt to identify each other while also working to take down an Irish gang in Boston. The Departed has been absent from streaming for the last few months, but Netflix has now made the film available to watch for all subscribers at the start of the month. The film earned scores of 91% from critics and 94% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $291 million globally against a $90 million budget.

Ray Winstone, an actor who embodies the image of the London hard man, will be honored at this year’s Sarajevo film festival with the honorary Heart of Sarajevo award in recognition of his “remarkable acting career and exceptional contributions to the art of cinema.”
A boxer-turned-actor, Winstone, with his growly voice and coiled intensity, has been a menacing force on screen since playing a juvenile delinquent in Alan Clarke’s 1979 drama Scum and the tough-guy mod Kevin in Franc Roddam’s cult film Quadrophenia (1979). In those and later roles, including Gary Oldman’s Nil by Mouth (1997) and Jonathan Glazer’s Sexy Beast (2000), Winstone demonstrated his ability to combine brute force with emotional vulnerability.
He has played plenty of heavies in his career — the mob enforcer in Martin Scorcese’s/Jack Nicholson’s The Departed (2006), the imprisoned drug boss Bobby Glass in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix hit series The Gentlemen — but also voiced Mr.

Matt Damon is one of the most bankable stars and highest-grossing actors of all time. He rose to stardom in 1997 with Good Will Hunting, a film he co-wrote and starred in alongside his lifelong friend Ben Affleck. Their work earned them an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, while Damon was also nominated for Best Actor, launching him into Hollywood's firmament.
From there, Damon quickly became a leading man with standout roles in The Talented Mr. Ripley, the Jason Bourne series, and Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's trilogy. He earned additional Oscar nominations for Invictus and The Martian. He's also starred in Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, Martin Scorsese's The Departed, and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, the last of which is Damon's highest-grossing film to date at $975 million.
Despite his many successes, Damon's filmography is not without misfires. Green Zone, Promised Land, Downsizing, Suburbicon, and The Last Duel...

This year, the Edinburgh International Film Festival will welcome acclaimed film editor Thelma Schoonmaker for a special “In Conversation” event to discuss her late husband Michael Powell’s life and filmmaking career.
Schoonmaker — best known for her Oscar-winning work on Raging Bull, The Aviator and The Departed — will take the audience through her partner’s career, which started with him directing low-budget films in the 1930s prior to his acclaimed 1937 film The Edge of the World (also screening in a restoration at Eiff 2025).
Powell is perhaps best known for his creative partnership with Emeric Pressburger, which produced some of the most brilliant British films of the 20th century, including The Life of Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Black Narcissus (1947) and The Red Shoes (1948).
Public outrage at Powell’s solo directorial effort, the disturbing horror Peeping Tom (1960) has since turned to praise and Powell is now...

It's been a while since star Liam Neeson could be counted on to deliver the goods every time you'd see his face on an action movie poster. But these days, he's been having more difficulty at the box office than he used to. His last film, Ice Road: Vengeance, was only given a token theatrical release. The ones before that — films such as The Marksman, Absolution, Retribution, and Memory — also got lost in oblivion. But among these action vehicles was an anomaly, the period noir Marlowe. Neeson played the iconic detective Philip Marlowe in the film, which tanked at the box office and with critics, but is witnessing something of a resurgence on streaming.
Directed by Neil Jordan and co-written by The Departed's William Monahan, Marlowe was the eighth-most-watched movie on HBO Max on July 27. It outperformed The Northman and Final Destination 2, accumulating a total of 115 points. Marlowe...
