Amazon Prime Video New Releases: May 2023
Image
With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.

The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”

The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

And that’s pretty much it for Amazon Originals this month! Thankfully, there is a huge influx of library content to keep Prime Video subscribers entertained. May 4 sees the...

Game of Thrones: 20 Scenes To Make You Want To Rewatch
Il trono di spade (2011)
Warning: contains spoilers for Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 (and – curveball – The Shield pilot).

The act of compiling a list of moments such as these – trawling through memories, devouring fan-sites, gorging on clips – really hammers home the joy of being a Game of Thrones fan. Whatever you thought of the latter seasons, or how the show ended, it’s impossible to recall certain moments from the fierce and frantic, frenetic, kinetic, splenetic, sprawling, sword-and-sorrow-soaked timeline without some part of you screaming: ‘Again! Again!’

The selection criteria here isn’t random, but neither is it scientific. The final results and rankings lay no claim to definitiveness. How could they? Whittling this list down to a mere 100 moments would’ve been tough. This is where you come in. If you feel that your favourite scene or iconic moment is conspicuous by its absence, then fly to the comments section and help us...

Image
The latest, seventh episode of Showtime’s Dexter: New Blood drew a season best 2.34 million total viewers across all platforms on Sunday, Dec. 19. That was the biggest total Sunday audience for a Showtime series telecast since the Shameless Season 8 premiere Nov.5, 2017 (2.4 million)

Dexter: New Blood already has become Showtime’s biggest series debut ever on streaming in premiere week viewership, shattering all Showtime Ott sign-up and viewership records. The limited series’ premiere, which stands as Showtime’s most-watched drama debut of all time and as the most watched scripted drama season premiere telecast among all premium networks in 2021 (in Live+7), has seen its audience grow to 8.2 million viewers to date a month a half after its Nov. 7 launch on linear and digital.

Streaming has fueled Dexter: New Blood’s ratings growth, with its streaming audience up by nearly +80% since premiere week. Dexter: New Blood is averaging 7 million weekly viewers across platforms,...

Mario Bava’s Shock Available on Blu-ray January 18th From Arrow Video
Image
“Death is like going on a trip, darling, only one doesn’t come back.”

Mario Bava’s final horror film Shock (1977) will be available on Blu-ray January 18th from Arrow Video

In a career spanning four decades and encompassing virtually every genre under the sun, Mario Bava inspired multiple generations of filmmakers, from Dario Argento to Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. Best remembered for his gothic horror movies, for his final feature, Shock, he eschewed the grand guignol excesses of Black Sabbath or Blood and Black Lace for a more intimate portrait of mental breakdown in which true horror comes from within.

Dora moves back into her old family home with her husband, Bruno, and Marco, her young son from her previous marriage. But domestic bliss proves elusive as numerous strange and disturbing occurrences transpire, while Dora is haunted by a series of nightmares and hallucinations, many of them involving her dead former husband.

‘Naomi Osaka’ Review: Softspoken Tennis Legend Gets a Mild-Mannered Docuseries
Image
Professional athletes, having trained with laser-like focus on a single pursuit for most of their lives, are not always the most interesting people. Tennis provides a few exceptions. John McEnroe, Serena Williams, and Andre Agassi all sport personalities as explosive off court as they are (or were) on it. Roger Federer is known for being a gentleman. Gael Monfils, a Frenchman, has a certain je ne sais quoi. Most everyone else makes the commentators sing for their supper.

Naomi Osaka can be soft-spoken, though not when it comes to her support for the Black Lives Matter movement. The 23-year-old has four Grand Slam titles to her name and is currently ranked No. 2 in the world in women’s singles. Being a little camera-shy has no bearing on her tennis, but it doesn’t make for great movie-making.

In three vaguely indistinguishable episodes, the Netflix docuseries “Naomi Osaka” offers a small...

Netflix’s ‘Naomi Osaka’ Docuseries Keeps Viewers at a Distance: TV Review
Image
Naomi Osaka’s first Grand Slam victory was so dramatic as to feel like the scripted climax to a movie. In 2018, the rising tennis phenom faced Serena Williams, one of the greatest to have ever played the sport and one of her longtime idols, and won in straight sets. But when Osaka lifted her trophy, she was blinking back tears borne of a bittersweet frustration rather than the happiness she might have envisioned.

In that crucial second set, the chair umpire cautioned Williams three times for various nitpicked offenses. When Williams vociferously defended her honor by calling him “a thief,” he penalized her by forcing her to forfeit a game in Osaka’s favor. By the time Osaka was serving for the match, the buzzing tension hanging over the stadium was palpable through the millions of television screens showing the final around the world, and made plain on Osaka’s face.

‘Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer’ Review: Dawn Porter Examines America’s Anti-Black, Jim Crow Pogroms
Image
“Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer” begins with workers marking off patches of green grass with orange paint. The beeps of a bulldozer sounded as excavation at the Oaklawn cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma, got underway last summer. Forensic anthropologist had turned up data that suggested there might be a mass grave at the site. Director Dawn Porter’s insightful, chilling, often elegant documentary about the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 and the other virulent outbursts of anti-Black violence that preceded it — making 1919 one of the deadliest for Black Americans at the hands of white mobs — premieres June 18 on National Geographic and Hulu.

“Rise Again” is a hard but welcome addition to a growing collection of movies and television series — fiction and nonfiction — that insists viewers reckon with the nation’s violent, anti-Black past, a past that has carried over into our present. That it begins streaming on Juneteenth — a complicated,...

‘Bo Burnham: Inside’ — Comedy and Tragedy Makes a Masterpiece
Image
Photo: ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’/Netflix Another Bo Burnham comedy special is just what the doctor ordered. Once he dropped the plan to release his one-man at-home show, comedy fans everywhere saw an extra sprinkle of sunlight in the air. Even though we knew nothing about the contents of the show until it arrived, you could expect there to be equal parts jokes, satire, criticism of sociological and cultural agendas, and of course, his patented existentialism. ‘Bo Burnham: Inside’ became available for streaming on Netflix on May 30th, 2021, and it is named incredibly appropriately: both for the setting of the show and its theme. Made over the course of the year-long lockdown and quarantine that was 2020 and early 2021, Bo wrote, directed, edited, and starred in the entire show, by himself, in his home. No audience, no camera crew, no editing house; there was nothing except for Bo and his genius mind.

‘Dallas Buyers Club’: A Pretty Picture in a House on Fire
Image
Photo: 'Dallas Buyers Club'/Focus Features "It's a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates.” These are the words of Mathew McConaughey during his Oscar acceptance speech in 2014 for his performance as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. How fitting for him to focus on the nature of gratitude in his speech when the Jean-Marc Vallée directed film he stars in champions themes such as generosity and integrity in the face of adversity. With Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner playing supporting roles, the film illustrates the gripping realities of the AIDS epidemic and the damning effect that a corrupt, money-hungry government can leave on entire communities. Taking home two Academy Awards, the film is a gritty dissection based on a true story of Texan pride that’s been riddled and bruised with stinging visceral pains. Michael Chiklis Wants To Play Fantastic Four’s The Thing In The McU
It’s official! Disney has bought Fox, meaning that the X-Men and Fantastic Four will likely be integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before long. While some fans are worried about what might happen with the current X-Universe, as it’s being called, it’s fair to say that just about everyone is pleased that Marvel’s First Family are returning home.

Fox has had three attempts in the past to nail a Fantastic Four movie, but have fluffed it every time. While there’s not much to defend in 2015’s effort, 2005’s outing and 2007’s Rise of the Silver Surfer did have some redeeming qualities. Sure, they were dumb and corny, but they did introduce Marvel fans to Chris Evans, who later swapped Human Torch for Captain America.

But could the McU pair Evans up with one of his old Ff cast members? That’s what Michael Chiklis is hoping for.

Crowley, Blue Deckert, Brad Leland, Jesse Plemons, Louanne Stephens, Minka Kelly, Zach Gilford, Adrianne Palicki, Aimee Teegarden, Taylor Kitsch, Kate Krause, Gaius Charles, Scott Porter, Kate Melton, Derek Phillips, Stacey Oristano, Omaka Omegah, and Sarah Kate Allsup in Friday Night Lights (2006)
Get ready for a new show to sing along to! NBC released the first trailer for its upcoming musical drama, Rise.

The new show, which premieres in March, comes from the producer of Broadway’s hit Hamilton as well as the producer of standout NBC dramas Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.

And though it will likely spark Glee comparisons as it follows a dedicated teacher (How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor) taking over the school’s theater department, the trailer definitely has the darker real-life elements of Friday Night Lights and Parenthood.

The show also stars Rosie Perez and Moana newcomer Auli’I Cravalho, 17, as it follows teens dealing with the pressures of school, their extracurriculars, underage drinking, and caring for sick parents.

Rise premieres on Tuesday, March 13 at 10 p.m. Et on NBC.

#WomenBoycottTwitter: Ava DuVernay, Elizabeth Banks, and Others Take Part in Rose McGowan’s Day-Long Protest

After being temporarily suspended from Twitter, Rose McGowan called on supporters to boycott the social-media site — and several people answered. The actress accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her 20 years ago, and her ban was apparently the result of tweeting a private phone number. Before going radio silent, a number of others announced their intentions.

Review: Gotham The Complete Third Season
Despite their wealth and social status. Thomas and Martha Wayne were victims of random violence in a city filled with such acts on an hourly basis. The robbery and dual murders could have happened to anyone which makes Bruce Wayne a sympathetic character – he could be us. His training to become Batman resonates because any of us could dedicate ourselves both mentally and physical to perfection in order to prevent others from becoming victims.

Unless you’re watching the mess that is Gotham. There, the everyman aspect has been stripped away from the event so here, in this twisted version of the comics, we learn their murders was ordered by the Court of Owls which is somehow tied in to the utterly corrupt Board of Directions of Wayne Enterprises.

With Gotham The Complete Third Season out now on Blu-ray from Warner Home Entertainment, we can relive the harebrained plotted which...

July 2017 Box Office Marks Third Straight Month in Decline
Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
After July 2015 and 2016 saw increases from one year to the next, July 2017 took a step back, down 12.2% compared to 2016 with calendar grosses reaching $1.2 billion from 221 films compared to $1.37 billion last July. Leading the way was Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming, which topped all releases bringing in $280 million in July, earning Sony the #1 spot for the month with six films grossing nearly $390 million. Overall, this marks the third month in a row to show a decline compared to 2016 with the summer movie season struggling and showing no sign of improvement in the month of August with the season currently pacing 11% behind 2016. Overall, August is likely to become the sixth month out of the first eight in 2017 to show a decline from one year to the next with 2017 currently -2% behind 2016. Digging deeper into July, we'll start at the top with Spider-Man: Homecoming, which delivered $280 million since its July 7 release. The film is now approaching $300 million domestically,...

When urban legends meet videogames
Ed Kegenof Jun 16, 2017

As The Evil Within 2‘s announced, we take a look at what happens when urban myths and legends collide with the realm of gaming...

Most people can cite at least a couple of urban legends or conspiracy theories. Paul McCartney isn't really Paul McCartney. A ghost haunts a single shot in the 80s comedy hit Three Men And A Baby. Blowing on Nintendo cartridges makes them work better.

With the advent of the internet, we might be forgiven for thinking that outlandish claims and tall tales would be chased away by the might of Google or a website like Snopes, where myth-busting facts are but a search term or click away. Instead, the web has allowed creepy stories and urban legends to travel more quickly than ever, as they’re copied and pasted in forums, emails and social media posts - hence the oft-used term 'creepypasta', used to describe these strange,...

Tom Hanks in Sully (2016)
Sully Conquers the Weekend Box Office with $35.5 Million
Tom Hanks in Sully (2016)
The Labor Day holiday weekend typically marks the end of the summer movie season, and the grosses typically reflect the end of summer as well. Last weekend, the hit thriller Don't Breathe took the top spot with $15.7 million over the first three-days, and a total of $19.5 over the extended four-day holiday, but it faced four newcomers this weekend, the true story biopic Sully, the sexually-charged thriller When the Bough Breaks, the animated adventure The Wild Life and Relativity's thriller The Disappointments Room. As predicted, Sully easily took the top spot with $35.5 million this weekend.

We had wondered if the 15th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks would cause people to skip Sully, starring Tom Hanks as the pilot who saved lives during an incredible emergency landing known as the Miracle on the Hudson. That wasn't the case, though, with the movie pulling in an impressive $10,072 per-screen average from 3,525 theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.

Will Clint Eastwood's Sully Fly High at the Box Office?
Tom Hanks in Sully (2016)
The low-budget hit thriller Don't Breathe managed to stay atop the box office during the Labor Day holiday weekend, taking in $15.7 million over the first three-days, and a total of $19.5 over the extended four-day holiday. Now that the fall movie season is kicking into high gear, some of this year's awards season favorites will start hitting the big screen, with the highly-anticipated biopic Sully poised to be one of the first Oscar candidates to arrive this year. We're predicting that Sully should have no trouble taking the top spot this weekend with $22.5 million, fending off fellow new releases The Disappointments Room, The Wild Life and When the Bough Breaks.

What will be interesting to see is how the 9/11 anniversary affects box office sales. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attack, and while Sully, which stars Tom Hanks as the title character, does not have anything to do with terrorism,...

After dethroning 20th Century Fox's Deadpool at the box office last weekend, Disney's Zootopia was easily expected to remain on top during its second frame in theaters. The animated comedy faced Paramount's low-budget thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, Sony's R-rated comedy The Brothers Grimsby, Focus Features' historical drama The Young Messiah and Lionsgate's The Perfect Match, none of which were expected to take down Zootopia. Box Office Mojo reports that Zootopia did in fact come out on top for the second weekend in a row, earning a healthy $50 million.

Zootopia only dropped an impressive 33.4% in its second weekend, with its current domestic tally at $142.6 million and an international total of $288.7 million for a global take of $431.3 million. The movie is a huge hit with critics, scoring a 99% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and Zootopia should do well with repeat viewing. Zootopia earned a healthy $13,065 per-screen average, with the movie playing in 3,827 theaters.

Disney's Zootopia managed to dethrone 20th Century Fox's Deadpool at the box office last weekend, by setting a few records of its own. It topped Dr. Seuss' the Lorax for the highest animated movie opening in March, and became the biggest debut ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios. This weekend, it will go up against four wildly different newcomers, Paramount's low-budget thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, Sony's R-rated comedy The Brothers Grimsby, Focus Features' historical drama The Young Messiah and Lionsgate's The Perfect Match, none of which are expected to best Zootopia, according to the projections at Pro.BoxOffice.com

Zootopia is expected to drop roughly 50% this weekend, taking in a projected $37.5 million, but since animated movies have tendencies to drop less from week to week, it's possible it could debut just north of $40 million. After all, the movie is a huge hit with critics, scoring a 99% "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes,...

Deadpool, and the box office of R-rated comic book films
facebook

twitter

google+

Deadpool's opening weekend proves that people will turn out R-rated comic book movies. But they have been doing since the 1970s...

Deadpool – an X-Men spin-off for Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Merc With The Mouth’ - is in cinemas now, and in spite of its R-rated tag, it's shattered the box office ceiling for February releases with a stunning $260m global opening weekend. Maybe this is the point where Hollywood realises that if it makes the right R-rated movie - Deadpool, rather than Jonah Hex - people will turn up.

That R stands for Restricted, meaning that under-17s in America will havehad to be accompanied by an adult if they wanted to see Deadpool in cinemas this weekend. It’s a 15-certificate film to me and other denizens of the British Isles, meaning that no under-15s this side of the pond will be permitted to see it in cinemas.

First Look at Paul Reubens as Penguin's Dad in 'Gotham' Season 2
Gotham (2014)
Back in October, just a few weeks after Season 2 of Gotham debuted, it was announced that Paul Reubens has signed on to play Tucker Cobblepot, the Penguin's father. It was never confirmed when this new character would actually debut on the show, but earlier today, Gotham executive producer Danny Cannon revealed the first photo of Tucker Cobblelpot on his Twitter page. The photo was taken on the first day of production after the holiday hiatus, with Paul Reubens pictured alongside his on-screen son, Robin Taylor.

Oddly enough, this is the second time that Paul Reubens is playing Tucker Cobblepot. He portrayed the Penguin's dad in the 1992 movie Batman Returns. No details have been given yet as to how the elder Cobblepot will be introduced into the show, but the return of Penguin's father certainly does come at a crucial time for this tormented character.

Earlier this season, Penguin's psyche was...

Gotham, Ep. 2.04, “Strike Force”
Gotham, Season 2, Episode 4, “Strike Force”

Written by Danny Cannon

Directed by Tj Scott

Airs Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox

Gotham enters a new arc as Theo Galavan begins to implement phase two of his plan to seize control of the City. The first part of his plan was to bestow chaos by unleashing the Maniax and his next move involves making himself appear as a hero to win the hearts and minds of the citizens. The extent of this plan was accomplished with the surprising twist in last week’s “The Last Laugh”, which also disposed of one of the show’s most interesting villains. This turn has reaped rewards for Galavan, as well as created a new shift in the direction of the season.

Galavan’s staged heroism has won him a candidacy for the Mayor’s office which will give passage for the next phase of his evil plan.

Robin Lord Taylor
The cast of Gotham made their second appearance at New York Comic-Con this weekend! During the Nycc panel, Robin Taylor announced that Paul Reubens has signed on to play Oswald Cobblepot's father, Tucker Cobblepot. Ironically, this will be the second time the actor has played this role, after his appearance as The Penguin's father in the 1992 movie Batman Returns. While it hasn't been confirmed when The Penguin's dad will make his debut, Robin Taylor revealed during the panel that he will pop up very soon.

"He will be showing up very soon. Pee-Wee Herman is playing my dad! What the hell? Oh my god!"

Emmy Award winner Paul Reubens created the iconic character "Pee-wee Herman" while a member of the famed Los Angeles improv group The Groundlings. The Joker’s Origin Will Finally Be Revealed By Gotham
Warner Bros.

One of the biggest secrets in comic book history if about to be explained.

Thanks to Gotham – a show which started unevenly and grew in confidence and popularity towards the end of its first season – we’re about to find out how the Joker became the Joker.

Having explosively introduced Jerome as the new big villain in town – and leader of the suspiciously Joker-ish sounding gang The Maniax – by having him lead a group of Arkham Asylum escapees into Gcpd and massacring almost everyone inside. On camera.

If that sort of behaviour and the sickening grin weren’t enough evidence that he’s on the firm path that ends with that famous purple suit, Gotham’s showrunner Bruno Heller has explicitly confirmed to Nerdist that’s where the show is headed:

“We’re going to be giving you concrete answers to his identity. That story is going to...
