The album is amazing, and the dvd is even better. Many "fans" claim that the dvd has a better sound than the cd. But most of them don't understand that the cd was produced to sound a certain way. It shows the guys in a smaller setting. Not such a grand scale as "Live Sh*t: Bing and Purge", "Cunning Stunts", or "S&M". I really liked how it showed four guys just jamming to some music, it made the dvd feel more like a "personal" setting. Almost as if you are sitting there seeing them play the whole album live. The album as a whole is a statement to what the band has endured as a whole and as individuals.
The St. Anger Rehearsals DVD came free with the purchase of the St. Anger CD. It showcases the band performing all their songs from St. Anger in full in order. It is also includes new bassist Rob Trujillo, formerly of the Suicidal Tendencies and Ozzy Osbourne. Filmed in "Metallica HQ," there is a lot of Metallica banners hanging, a Canadian flag, and the head of Lady Justice from the "And Justice for All" cover, which sends off some good vibes and also reminds you who you're watching in case you're an idiot.
The sound quality on the DVD is very crisp and clean. The guitars are leveled better so you can hear more distinction between notes. The bass is actually turned up and you can hear it. Lars Ulrich's drum set (which many people complained about) is not overpowering like it is on the CD. This is the kit he used on the Madly In Anger World Tour, and you can clearly see that the "pinging" noise of the snare on the CD is because he does not have the ring to soften the snap of the snare, making it bearable.
The vocals aren't the best, but then again they aren't on the CD either. Even Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo do back up. The camera-work is fine, and they do run some old film or strobe effects through it at times to give it a garage feel, but occasionally the camera zooms in and out really fast and not even during fast parts, which is annoying. Overall, it's a great look at watching a legendary band rehearse for one of the first times with a new member and all-new material, and having fun doing it.

This album is awesome but not their best. I hope they dig deeper into their Kill 'em all, 'Lightning, and 'Puppets roots. I liked their "raw" sound. I'm glad to see their music is getting harder.
this dvd is great I watch it a lot.It shows how great these guys would be live. When I watch it it makes me want to go to one of their concerts really bad.It is so good that when I listened to the cd after watching the dvd the music sounded even better.I can't believe that they did not think of anything like this sooner.
Anytime I need a little energy I just pop this dvd in and get pumped. The extreme closups and intimate setting put you right in the middle of the greatest musicians of our time. I realize there are a lot of anti-metallica-ites out there but I also know Metallica has the most die hard fans of any group out there and I know all the die hards will love this performance. I just want to thank Metallica themselves for including this with their newest release; which by the way is the most aggresive Metallica album to date. The way this film is produced gives even the most amateur musicians a glimpse of what excellent heavy metal is. I strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys heavy, fast metal; be extremely cautious, for this dvd kicks serious @$$!!!
