The Joe Schmo Show

‘Jerry Maguire’ and ‘Stuart Little’ Child Star Jonathan Lipnicki Says ‘I’m Not Where I Want to Be Career-Wise’ as an Adult: ‘I Want to Turn This Ship Around’
Image
Jonathan Lipnicki said in a recent interview with People magazine that he is trying to turn his acting career around after it more or less sputtered following his iconic run as a child actor in the late 1990s and early 2000s. With roles in “Jerry Maguire” (1996), the “Stuart Little” movies (1999-2002), “The Little Vampire” (2000) and “Like Mike” (2002), Lipnicki was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable young performers. He cut back on acting to attend high school and says that he’s since struggled to match the professional highs of his youth.

“I had some really good things that happened when I was younger. It’s totally fine to say I’m not where I want to be career-wise,” Lipnicki said, adding that he’s “all right” with that for now. “Everything we’re doing in this life is nearly impossible.”

“This is the thing I want to do for the rest of my life,...

‘The Joe Schmo Show’ Has A Whole New Joe
Image
Sometime between The Truman Show and Jury Duty, the Spike cable network premiered The Joe Schmo Show. It was 2003, and reality TV was in a boom time where no premise was too outlandish. You could feed contestants testicles or chain them together or drop them in a foreign location to try to find their way back to the U.S., and no one would have you arrested. Schmo did something more daring than any other show in its class: It showed the viewer it was completely fake.

In the first season, Matt Kennedy Gould believed he had been cast on a Big Brother-ish show called Lap of Luxury. In fact, he was the only person involved in The Joe Schmo Show who didn’t know he was the main character of the universe, at least as far as the production was concerned. Everyone he interacted with was an improv...

Thank ‘The Joe Schmo Show’ for Kristen Wiig
Image
Back in 2003, in the heyday of reality television, Spike TV gave the world The Joe Schmo Show. It was a parody of the genre through the lens of one unsuspecting individual who believed he was on a real series called “The Lap of Luxury,” sort of like The Truman Show. Aside from Matt Kennedy Gould, the rest of the cast was in on the hoax. The other individuals, all trained improv actors, played into well-known reality TV archetypes, including Dr. Pat the Quack. One actress was exceptional and quite neurotic because she was nervous about blowing up the plan. Little did we know then that this incredible improv actress was future comedy star and Saturday Night Live legend Kristen Wiig.

TBS’ Joe Schmo Show Reboot Sets January Premiere — Watch Trailer
Image
Next month is now officially Joe-nuary. TBS has set a Tuesday, Jan. 21 (9/8c) premiere date for its reboot of The Joe Schmo Show, TVLine has learned.

Just like the original series, which aired for three seasons on Spike (R.I.P.!) between 2003 and 2013, the new Joe Schmo Show is a reality TV experiment in which one player believes that he’s competing to win a $100,000 grand prize — completely unaware that his competitors are all “highly skilled improv comedians,” according to TBS. This time around, the clueless player is a Baltimore-based electrician named Ben.

Batman Fights Mr. Freeze in New Merry Little Batman Clip
Image
A new clip from the upcoming DC animated movie, Merry Little Batman, featuring Mr. Freeze, has been released.

Fandom shared the 59-second clip on X, which shows the Dark Knight being lured out deep into the winter wilderness by Mr. Freeze, voiced by Dolph Adomian, who seems to be doing an impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The beloved action star and former professional bodybuilder previously played Mr. Freeze in the 1997 live-action movie, Batman & Robin. After Mr. Freeze tries out more than one "lame" (according to Batman) ice pun out on the Caped Crusader, the clip continues with the two DC characters getting caught up in an avalanche. Luckily, Batman uses his grapple gun to propel them to safety.

Who Is Ronald Gladden In Real Life And Did His Life Change Forever After Jury Duty?
Image
Jury Duty became a surprise hit for Amazon Prime, garnering dedicated viewers and surpassing the popularity of other shows. The success of Jury Duty can be compared to that of The Joe Schmo Show, which also relied on a fake reality show concept. Ronald Gladden, the star of Jury Duty, rose to fame after responding to a Craigslist ad, and his life has since changed dramatically.

Since Amazon decided to introduce a streaming service, several of its shows have garnered dedicated viewers. Still, it definitely could be argued that Jury Duty became a bigger viral hit for Amazon Prime than almost anything else the company has produced.

Since Jury Duty was so popular, fans want to know what series actor Whitney Rice thought about its first season and the advice she would give young actors. Of course, most Jury Duty viewers were fascinated by Ronald Gladden which left them wondering...

‘Jury Duty,’ ‘The Rehearsal’ and ‘Paul T. Goldman’: When Comedy’s at the Expense of Unsuspecting People
Image
Earlier this spring, TBS announced that it had ordered a new season of The Joe Schmo Show, the format in which a single ordinary person found themselves in the middle of what they thought was an unscripted series, only to eventually discover that everybody around them was actually a comedian attempting to bamboozle that one Joe Schmo.

On one hand, it was a somewhat unlikely resurrection for the quirky reality-comedy hybrid, which originally debuted on Spike TV — remember Spike TV? — back in 2003, aired a second season in 2004, went into hibernation until a third season in 2013, and then returned to sleep for another decade.

On the other hand, bringing back The Joe Schmo Show became an oddly obvious choice after a year in which the lines between scripted comedy and reality became more blurry than ever before, or at least more blurry than any point since that mid-’00s moment when...

Ralph Garman Explains Why He's Not in The Joe Schmo Show Reboot
Image
TBS has announced a revival for The Joe Schmo Show, bringing back the same concept with an all new cast of actors... along with a new Schmo. One key change that happens this time around is that Ralph Garman won't be featured in the revival. In all three of the show's prior iterations, Garman had played the host, portraying a separate character for each season. A teaser for the revival reveals that Cat Deeley is the new host and there was no trace of Garman anywhere to be seen.

Speaking about the reboot with The Hollywood Reporter, Garman explained the full story of why he's not involved with the new Joe Schmo Show. He says he was approached about appearing in the new season, though the pitch was for a brief cameo rather than serving as host. From the start, that had Garman feeling "disappointed," though he was still open...

Original ‘Joe Schmo Show’ Host Explains Why He Turned Down Cameo in Reboot: “I Felt Disrespected”
Image
Reality television hoax series The Joe Schmo Show is getting new life 20 years after it initially debuted, but it will be without the main face of its original version.

Created by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who would go on to pen Zombieland and the Deadpool franchise, the series launched on Spike in September 2003. Similar to Freevee’s recent show Jury Duty, which starred James Marsden, Joe Schmo featured a cast of actors pretending to be part of a reality competition series, with only one person not in on the joke and actually striving to collect the prize.

Over the three initial seasons, the one constant presence was that of Ralph Garman, a comedian and actor (his credits include Ted and voice work on Family Guy) who currently leads the podcast The Ralph Report and co-hosts Hollywood Babble-On with Kevin Smith. Garman led the proceedings in all three seasons of Schmo,...

“Not Exactly the Show We Expected to Do”: Warner Bros. Discovery Touts Max “Dream” in Talent-Free Upfront

The Writers Guild of America picket line outside the Warner Bros. TBS Revives ‘The Joe Schmo Show’ Hoax Reality Format, Now Hosted by Cat Deeley
Image
As Amazon Freevee’s hoax reality series “Jury Duty” is currently garnering huge amounts of attention, the format originator is staging a comeback. TBS is set to announce Wednesday that it has ordered a revival of “The Joe Schmo Show,” which will air next year on the cabler.

The original “Joe Schmo” premiered in 2003 on Spike TV, with a follow-up in 2004 and then a third season revival in 2013. Created by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, “Joe Schmo” made waves when it first debuted for parodying the then-relatively new and white-hot reality competition genre.

The new “Joe Schmo” will be hosted by Cat Deeley (“So You Think You Can Dance”) and once again center on a show-within-a-show in which one non-acting civilian thinks he’s competing on a reality series — when he’s actually in a scripted environment surrounded by improv comedians.

‘The Joe Schmo Show’ 20-Year Reboot Ordered at TBS (Video)
The Joe Schmo Show (2003)
Warner Bros. Discovery announced as part of its upfronts Wednesday that a reboot order of “The Joe Schmo Show” is a go at TBS for 2024. Watch the first teaser trailer above.

Reality TV has come a long way since 2003 when the original “Joe Schmo Show” was watched by more than 44 million viewers. Now to be hosted by five-time Emmy Award nominee Cat Deeley, the 20-year reboot’s show within a show will take aim at the absurdity of reality TV by making a regular guy believe he is competing on a reality show, when he is, in fact, surrounded by a cast of highly skilled improv comedians.

Where to Watch Jury Duty
Image
A surprise hit for Amazon, the mockumentary style sitcom Jury Duty has been well received by viewers and critics alike. Tthe series is shot like a documentary, exposing what it’s like to be a juror in an American trial. However, there’s one catch: the trial is fake and everyone is an actor playing a role. That is, except for one unsuspecting average Joe – a young man named Ronald Gladden. Ronald applied for the role via a Craigslist ad, completely unaware that he would be the subject of the story and everything that occurred was completely planned. He came out of the project looking like a heartwarming hero and was $100,000 richer for it.

Emmy spotlight: Amazon Freevee’s ‘Jury Duty’ deserves to be in the comedy conversation
Image
If you haven’t discovered the eight-part genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” that started streaming April 7 on Amazon’s free streaming service Freevee, it’s time that you did. It’s been described as the world’s first feelgood prank show, and it’s all of that and more. Here the elevator pitch: “The Office” meets “The Truman Show.” Here’s the premise: A guy answers a Craigslist add looking for someone to participate in a filmed documentary about serving on a jury. What they don’t mention is that they would essentially be unwittingly performing in a sitcom that the person didn’t know was a sitcom and that everyone surrounding them – and we do mean everyone – was an actor.

That unsuspecting dupe happens to be a good-natured, game-for-anything young man named Ronald Gladden, and through the eight episodes of “Jury Duty” we follows his selection onto the purported jury...

‘Jury Duty’ Review: Even James Marsden Playing James Marsden Can’t Give This Prank Comedy Much Purpose
Image
Who would have guessed that The Joe Schmo Show, a series that aired three seasons on the since-renamed Spike network scattered between 2003 and 2013, would be TV’s most influential format of 2022 and 2023? Other than fans of The Joe Schmo Show, I mean.

That series, in which an ordinary civilian — a “Joe Schmo,” if you will — is pranked/hoaxed/conned/scammed into believing he was part of a reality show when he was actually surrounded by a crew of actors, has its potent DNA in Nathan Fielder’s The Rehearsal, one of my favorite shows of last year, and Peacock’s Paul T. Goldman, a provocatively noxious offering from earlier this winter. Now it’s back again in Freevee’s Jury Duty.

Jury Duty, which spreads its prank across eight episodes, ultimately has two things going for it: The first, is that it’s condescending but not contemptuous as relates to its Joe Schmo hero,...

All The Clerks III Cameos Ranked
Image
Filmmaker Kevin Smith started his career by making a movie with his friends, and honestly, nothing's really changed. The prolific writer and director recently released his goodbye to the View Askewniverse, "Clerks III," and pulled out all of the stops bringing his famous (and not-so-famous) friends together for one last hurrah.

There are so many cameos in "Clerks III" that it's almost difficult to determine what's a cameo and what's simply someone reprising a role from one of the other Askewniverse films, but that's honestly part of the fun. After all, this is a universe where there are at least five different men walking around looking and sounding like Ben Affleck, including a brand new one introduced in "Clerks III."

Dante (Brian O'Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) are back, of course, along with a few other View Askewniverse favorites that actually have too much screen-time to be "cameos," but there...

A live-action Disney movie following Cinderella's evil stepsisters is in the works from Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the pair behind this year's comedy movie Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. Wiig and Mumolo are on board to pen the screenplay, but because the project is in the very early stages of development, it's unclear if they'll also be starring as well, as was the case with their previous collaboration.

The Cinderella's Evil Stepsisters movie is described as "a fairy tale musical comedy that re-imagines the Cinderella classic from the point of view of her infamous evil stepsisters. Spanning from their early childhood through the marriage of their universally beloved stepsister and beyond, we follow Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine as they struggle to uphold their family's legacy."

As a pair, Wiig and Mumolo were nominated for a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for penning the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids. While Wiig...

Can Joe Dirt outdo Joe Schmo?
David Spade
truTV, which recently rebranded itself to focus more on comedy and less on fakery, has announced that it's ordered a new prank show executive produced by David Spade. This isn't another hidden camera series, however. Instead, "Fameless" will make its cameras very visible. It's a series that the network describes as "half sketch show/half prank show," one that "will take a lighthearted look at how far people will go to be famous." What that means is this: a group of actors and improvisers will create a fake show, like an SNL sketch, but then play it out with a real person as one of the contestants. David Spade, who's also going to be in the return of "Joe Dirt" this summer, will appear at least once in the series, which is produced by Electus. If this sounds familiar, that's probably because it sounds a lot like "The Joe Schmo Show,...

Kristen Wiig Facts: 23 Things You (Probably) Don't Know About the Actress
Since breaking out on "Saturday Night Live," Kristen Wiig has been lighting up the comedy scene and paving the way for female entertainers.

After realizing that acting was her passion, the art student dropped everything and headed out to Los Angeles to make her dreams a reality. While success was hardly immediate for Wiig, her hall of fame "SNL" career and breakout film role in "Bridesmaids" (2011) have made her one of the biggest comedy actresses today. This fall, Wiig taps into her dramatic side in the indie favorite "The Skeleton Twins" opposite fellow "SNL" alum, Bill Hader.

From her days selling hot dogs to her big-screen debut, here are 23 things you probably don't know about Kristen Wiig.

1. Kristen Wiig was born August 22, 1973 in Canadaigua, New York to Laurie J. Johnston and Jon J. Wiig.

2. Her mother was an artist, while her father ran a lake marina in Western New York.

Zombieland Series Dropped by Amazon Studios After Negative Reaction to Pilot
"Zombieland" is based on the hit Columbia Pictures movie of the same name, and finds four survivors outwitting zombies and searching for a place to call home. The "Zombieland" pilot comes from the feature film's original creative team, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, "The Joe Schmo Show"), and producer Gavin Polone ("Gilmore Girls," "Curb Your Enthusiasm"). Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) is directing the pilot. The part of Tallahassee will be played by Kirk Ward (The Island), Maiara Walsh ("Desperate Housewives," "Switched at Birth") is cast as Wichita, Tyler Ross (Milkshake) will play Columbus, and Izabela Vidovic has the role of Little Rock. Amazon Not Moving Forward with Zombieland the Series; Is Fan Hate to Blame?
"Zombieland" co-writer/executive producer Rhett Reese took to Twitter to vent a bit upon hearing the news that Amazon will not be moving forward with the series. While reviews were definitely mixed, he seemed to place the blame on fans of the film who refused to embrace the concept.

Here are Reese's comments:

Our Zombieland series will not be moving forward on Amazon. Sad for everyone involved.

I'll never understand the vehement hate the pilot received from die-hard Zombieland fans. You guys successfully hated it out of existence.

Anyway, we did our best, and we're very proud of our team.

Amazon Passes on Zombieland Series
Amazon.com released a Zombieland pilot episode over their instant video service last month, but it has been revealed that they will not move forward with an order of additional episodes. The pilot was released along with a number of original pilots in April, but reaction to the episode was less than positive from many of those who had seen it.

While this is likely the end for Zombieland: The Series, it is possible that another company could pick up the show. If we hear anything else about the project moving forward, we’ll be sure to let readers know. If you’d like a preview of the pilot, we’ve included the official trailer below. Here’s the original pilot announcement from Amazon:

Seattle—March 25, 2013—Amazon Studios, the original movie and series production arm of Amazon.com, today announced it will add cult classic Zombieland to the line-up of...

Watch All 14 Amazon Pilots Online Now
AmazonStudios is taking a more unusual approach by letting viewers decide what they want to keep watching. The company has kicked off its screening process this weekend by unveiling its inaugural slate of 14 pilots — eight comedies and six kids shows, all made available for free on AmazonInstant Video, LoveFilm UK and LoveFilm Germany. Viewers are being invited to watch the pilots and Amazon is welcoming feedback from its audience. According to Deadline, the company will evaluate feedback from an online panel recruited on Amazon preview as well as traditional offline focus groups to decide if they greenlight a series or not. The highest-profile series is Zombieland, but the two that look most interesting are Alpha House, starring John Goodman with cameos by Bill Murray and Stephen Colbert; and Onion News Empire. Amazon has not yet decided how many of the shows will make the cut, nor when they will premiere.
