Liam Neeson’s awards history: from Oscar nods to action hero to comedy star in ‘Naked Gun’
Image
Liam Neeson, best known for his dramatic and action roles, is currently earning rave reviews for his turn as the bumbling L.A. detective Frank Drebin Jr. in The Naked Gun. While the film may not be an Oscar contender, it boasts a strong A– CinemaScore and holds a solid 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Beyond his comedic chops, Neeson, star of Schindler’s List, Kinsey, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and Taken, is no stranger to awards and critical acclaim. Here’s a look back at his awards history.

The Irish-born actor earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Oskar Schindler in Schindler’s List (1993). Although Tom Hanks took home the statue that year for Philadelphia, Neeson’s performance was widely praised. The film itself received 12 Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Picture and Best Director for Steven Spielberg.

In addition to his Oscar nod,...

Lanterns Reportedly Adds Oscar-Nominated Love Actually Star - Is She Playing The Dcu's Carol Ferris?
Image
DC Studios has attracted some exciting talent for the Dcu, though it could do with a few more A-listers. Fortunately, Jeff Sneider is reporting today that Laura Linney has joined the cast of HBO Max's Lanterns.

The Love Actually star has been the recipient of many awards, including three Emmys and two Golden Globes. She's also received three Academy Award nominations.

Who is Linney playing? Sneider isn't sure. However, Kyle Chandler is 59 and Linney is 61; taking that into account, it would make sense for her to take on the role of Carol Ferris, the love of Hal Jordan's life and the superhero known as Star Sapphire. The reporter acknowledged that it's a possibility on The Hot Mic podcast.

We wouldn't be surprised if she's powerless in the Dcu, unless the Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Indigo and Violet, Black, White, and Ultraviolet Corps from across the emotional spectrum have existed for years.

5 Movies Kevin Spacey Turned Down and Regretted Instantly
Image
Kevin Spacey has not taken on a single role since 2017 due to his s*xual assault allegations, but this was not the case back in the day. The New Jersey-born actor was killing it in the 90s with action-packed roles like John Doe in David Fincher’s movie Se7en (1995), Kevin “Verbal” Kint in The Usual Suspects (1995) a movie by Bryan Singer, and Lester Burnham in American Beauty a film by Sam Mendes, to name just a few.

The actor has an amazing filmography and has bagged two Oscars as well. He is someone whose name in the cast would fill up theaters. However, even a great actor like Spacey can mess up in selecting his next role and miss out on movies that go on to become hits. This often happens in Hollywood—actors rejecting scripts or, at times, being rejected by casting crews or directors.

Let’s look at...

The Three Liam Neeson Movies On IMDb's Top 250 List
Image
If you grew up watching movies in the mid-2000s, chances are you think of Liam Neeson as some sort of perpetually grizzled action hero engaged in a never-ending quest for vengeance. It's no secret that the Irish star has spent the latter part of his career fronting a series of middling actioners that, if you removed the names and flimsy plots, would basically all be the same film. (We've even ranked the 10 best "old man Liam Neeson action films" right here.)

It all began with 2008's "Taken," which began Neeson's action star makeover and was actually a pretty good movie that set a precedent for similar films moving forward. But there was a time when Neeson was known for much more than being the permanently upset badass dad. Prior to 2008, the man had some seriously impressive accomplishments to his name, such as a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his...

Why Liam Neeson Felt Embarrassed By The Script For One Of His Biggest Hits
Image
When the trailer for "Taken" first started making the rounds in 2008, no one thought it was terribly out of character for Liam Neeson to star in a straight-ahead action flick. With films like "Darkman," "Rob Roy" and "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace" on his resume, the 1993 Best Actor nominee for "Schindler's List" certainly seemed comfortable making genre movies. The surprise was the five years that led up to it. After failing to snag a well-deserved second Best Actor nomination for "Kinsey" in 2004, he segued to supporting parts in "Kingdom of Heaven," "Batman Begins" and "Breakfast on Pluto," which suggested he was either getting passed over for lead roles, didn't fit the star type for whatever was being offered, or entering the character actor phase of his career.

After the moody Western "Seraphim Falls" failed to catch on with moviegoers (despite the intriguing pairing of Neeson and Pierce Brosnan), next up was "Taken.

David Harbour's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best David Harbour movies and TV shows tell a story of patience paying off, as years of commitment to delivering strong performances eventually led to the fame the actor currently enjoys over three decades after his debut. Born in New York in 1975, David Harbour became a household name thanks to his performance as Hopper in Stranger Things, which debuted in 2016. However, this was far from Harbour’s first role, as he began his career as an actor in 1994, spending years on stage in theatrical productions before his TV debut.

1999 marked David Harbour’s first on-screen appearance, playing a one-off character on Law & Order. It was in 2004 that he landed his first role in a feature film, director Bill Condon’s biographical drama Kinsey. However, from there, Harbour’s career started to gain momentum, with each new appearance on the big and small screen drawing evermore attention to his name.

Liam Neesons Highest-Rated Movies Confirm He Is Making The Right Decision About His Action Career Future
Image
Liam Neeson is making some major decisions related to his action movie career. Neeson has starred in several popular action movies, such as The Grey, The Commuter, The Marksman, and of course, the Taken movies. However, the actor recently admitted that he is planning to retire from action movies. Neeson acknowledged that he is 72 years old now, and doesn't want to film an action movie if he can't even do most of his stunts. Therefore, Neeson predicted he would retire from action films by the end of 2025.

While Neeson's name has become quite synonymous with the action genre in recent years, he actually did not get his start in action films. It was 2008's Taken that led Neeson further and further into the action genre. Taken grossed $226 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of just $25 million, so it only made sense for Neeson to star in more action movies.

The actor is set to play Parliament-Funkadelic leader George Clinton in an untitled biopic from director Bill Condon for Amazon MGM Studios. The film will be produced by Murphy via Eddie Murphy Productions, John Davis via Davis Entertainment, Davis and Greg Yolen. Eddie Murphy Productions’ Charisse Hewitt-Webster, as well as Clinton, Archie Ivy and Jeff Jampol are executive producing.

‘Awards Chatter’ Live Pod: Peter Sarsgaard on ‘September 5’ and ‘Presumed Innocent,’ Sex Scenes and Working With Family
Image
Peter Sarsgaard, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast — which was recorded in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where Sarsgaard was honored with the Film Performance of the Year Award — is a remarkable character actor who is enjoying the biggest year of his career. He shines in both the new Paramount film September 5, playing Roone Arledge as ABC Sports covers 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attack, and on the new Apple TV+ drama series Presumed Innocent, as a prosecutor tasked with convicting a former colleague of a murder.

The 53-year-old, who has a distinctive voice and sleepy-eyed gaze, has been acting professionally on the stage and screens big and small for 30 years. Early in his career, it was fashionable to describe him with sort of backhanded compliments — for instance, the New York Times noted in 2004 that he has a “tendency to...

This Thriller With 80% On Rt Is The Peak Of Liam Neeson's Action Career - And It's Leaving Streaming Soon
Image
Neeson's dive into action with Taken sparked a successful path in the genre, paving the way for The Grey's chilling intensity. The Grey stands out as Neeson's peak action film, boasting critical acclaim and intense survival sequences. Compared to Taken, The Grey offers a bone-chilling fight for survival that solidifies Neeson's action star status.

Liam Neeson's best action film since 2008's Taken will soon be leaving streaming. The Ireland-born actor fosters an illustrious career dating back to the late 70s and has not only performed but excelled in films of various genres, i.e., the 1993 historical epic Schindler's List, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination and the 2004 biographical romance Kinsey that drew him a Golden Globe nomination. In 2008, Neeson unexpectedly took a chance at a genre with a bit more grit by starring in the cast of Pierre Morel's action thriller Taken and shone there, too.

Apple TV+ Debuts New Selection of 50+ Licensed Movies for a Limited Time

The list of movies is only guaranteed to be available until the end of June, but until then Apple TV+ customers can watch some true classics.

Apple TV+ is continuing to step out of its wheelhouse and try something new in 2024. At the start of March, the streamer imported a wide selection of movies from various Hollywood studios, marking the first time in its history that Apple TV+ had added on a substantial number of non-original titles. Those films were only available for a limited time, some as short as a few weeks, but it proved popular enough for the platform to add more in April. Now, as first reported by 9to5 Mac, Apple TV+ is rolling out another wave of licensed films as it tries to determine which ones its audience are responding to the most.

Key Details: A total of 56 new movies are now available to stream on...

Liam Neeson is checking into “Hotel Tehran.”

The Oscar-nominee turned on-screen avenging angel is joining the previously announced Zachary Levi in the new action-thriller from Guy Moshe. Cameras will start rolling in late summer. The rest of the ensemble will be cast in the coming weeks.

Sundance 2024: ‘Suncoast’ is a Moving Study On the Real Value of Life
Image
After four consecutive years covering the Sundance Film Festival, January 2024 was a good time for a break. That said, the attention and interest in the numerous films submitted to the festival, as well as the emergence of new stars in front of and behind the screen, remained intact. Suncoast was one of the better received movies, and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) won the Breakthrough Performance award, so expectations were higher than usual, although once again, I started watching without knowing anything about the narrative.

Suncoast tells the story of Doris (Parker), a shy teenager with complicated family issues. Her brother has brain cancer, so any day could be his last, while her mother, Kristine (Laura Linney), directs all her attention to her son, leading to a gradual distance from Doris. Filmmaker Laura Chinn takes basic coming-of-age formulas and transforms them into a carefully written, mesmerizing study of numerous...

Made In Italy Cast & Character Guide
Image
"Made in Italy" stars a wide variety of actors and actresses from Italy, Ireland, and Scotland. Liam Neeson and Micheál Richardson star as father and son, mirroring their real-life relationship. The movie revolves around a complicated father-son relationship and the sale of their old Italian home.

Made in Italy features a cast of mostly Italian actors, which shouldn't surprise most, given the title of the movie, and two related stars from Ireland. The 2020 comedy-drama was directed and written by James D'Arcy, and the film revolves around a complicated relationship between a father and his son, who come together to sell their old Italian home and confront demons from their past. The movie had a limited theatrical release in August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so it only grossed a little under $3 million at the box office.

Made in Italy was also released on video on demand (VOD) in August 2020, where it performed well.

Which ‘Love Actually’ cast member will be next to earn an Oscar nomination?
Image
December 2003. Twenty years ago. It was a special time for moviegoers. That’s because it was the first holiday season in which “Love Actually” could actually be part of one’s Christmas time festivities. (Richard Curtis‘ ensemble romantic comedy was still playing to healthy crowds in cinemas.)

While the film would not figure into that year’s Academy Awards race, the cast did feature a handful of past Oscar contenders — and a few winners. Sho which “Love Actually” cast member will be next to earn an Oscar nomination?

The most noticeable of those winners was Emma Thompson, 1992’s Best Actress for “Howards End.” She tried (unsuccessfully) for acting awards three more times, including for 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility.” For penning that script, she accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for superbly adapting the classic novel by Jane Austen.

The other “Love Actually” cast member with an Oscar in their possession was Billy Bob Thornton,...

Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard have both officially entered the Oscar race for their extraordinary performances in Michel Franco’s “Memory.” However, the awards campaign has announced that Sarsgaard’s riveting turn as a man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease will be submitted for supporting actor consideration at the major ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, SAG and Academy Awards. His Oscar-winning co-star Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) will vie for lead actress.

It premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival, where Sarsgaard received the Volpi Cup for best actor from the Jury, joining the ranks of past honorees such as Brad Pitt (“The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”) and River Phoenix (“My Own Private Idaho”). ‘Freud’s Last Session’ Review: Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode Out Analyze Each Other in Dense Drama
David Cronenberg
Hollywood has tried for decades to make psychoanalysis compelling for the layman, whether that’s David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” to Bill Condon’s “Kinsey.” Director Matthew Brown (“The Man Who Knew Infinity”) is the latest to look at the density of psychology, philosophy and existentialism with his quasi-historical drama “Freud’s Last Session.”

The film tells the story of a fictional meeting between Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and author C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode). Freud is suffering from oral cancer while Lewis has embraced a newfound love for Christianity. The pair meet in the hopes of crafting some type of relationship and spend the day going back and forth on the everything from God to the meaning of life.

It’s a fairly simple premise that holds promise: what would the greatest psychoanalyst and the most pronounced theologian have to talk about? The answer is enough to fill a two...

‘Memory’ Offers Painful Reminder the Academy Still Owes Peter Sarsgaard an Oscar Nom: Will They Remember This Year?
Image
It’s time for Peter Sarsgaard to finally shatter the Oscar glass.

Once upon a time, actor Peter Sarsgaard won the most precursors prizes during the 2003-2004 awards season for his supporting turn in Billy Ray’s “Shattered Glass.” In the film, he plays Charles Lane, a newly promoted editor who suspects one of his revered writers (played by Hayden Christensen) could have fabricated some of his stories. However, when it came time for the major televised ceremonies, he was only able to muster a Golden Globe nod, then to be followed by shocking snubs from SAG, BAFTA and eventually the Academy Awards.

It was one of the few times in recent awards history where the leader of critics’ acting prizes failed to nab Oscar recognition (others include Ethan Hawke for “First Reformed...

Liam Neeson's New Action Movie Continues A Years-Long Negative Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
Liam Neeson's latest film, Retribution, continues his streak of low-rated movies, receiving a disappointing 30% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This marks Neeson's eighth consecutive Rotten movie, indicating a notable decline in critical reception for his action films. While Neeson's action movies have been successful at the box office, the negative reviews and diminishing audience scores may suggest the end of his action hero phase.

Retribution continues a negative Rotten Tomatoes trend for star Liam Neeson. The movie, which is a remake of the 2015 Spanish movie El desconocido, was helmed by Predators and Stranger Things director Nimród Antal. It stars Neeson as Matt Turner, a financier who receives a call informing him that there is a bomb in his car while he is driving his kids to school, plunging him into a high-octane game of cat and mouse.

Ahead of the Retribution release date on August 25, Rotten Tomatoes has released a low score.

‘Marlowe’ Movie Revew: How can I not compare it to the all-time classic?

About the Movie

Whether it was well-made, brilliant, or even if Orson Welles had directed it, I would have reason to be a bit reticent with this film. And, indeed I am, for the obvious reason that it dares revisit an untouchable classic.

Liam Neeson provides us with a similar role – if not identical – to Bogart’s,...

SAG Awards nominee profile: Laura Linney (‘Ozark’) has one last chance to bag hardware for playing Wendy Byrde
Image
Even after two Critics Choice, two Golden Globe, three Emmy and three individual Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, Laura Linney‘s ledger remains empty when it comes to hardware for her turn as Wendy Byrde on “Ozark.” The actor is long overdue for recognition of her work on the Netflix series and only has one more chance to attain it: at the 29th SAG Awards, where she is up for Best TV Drama Actress for its fourth and final installment.

Also shortlisted alongside her “Ozark” cast members this year, Linney now has 11 career SAG Awards nominations under her belt. She landed her first three on the film side, earning solo recognition for her performances in “You Can Count on Me” (2000) and “Kinsey” (2004), as well as an ensemble bid for “Mystic River” (2003). The actor lost all three races, but won on the TV side for the limited series “John Adams” in...

Suncoast: Everything We Know So Far About The Laura Linney, Woody Harrelson Drama
Image
Laura Chinn has written for projects like "The Mick," "Children's Hospital," and "Florida Girls," which she created and starred in. She's also acted in projects like "Happy Endings," and "Warrior." If that wasn't enough, Chinn had a script selected for 2020's The Black List, a grouping of all the unproduced scripts of note from that year. That script is set to become the upcoming drama film "Suncoast," which will serve as Chinn's directorial debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Production for the new film will begin in September through Searchlight Pictures, with a number of big-name actors signing on for roles, including Woody Harrelson and Laura Linney. Laura Chinn recently published her memoir entitled "Acne" through Hachette Books, which scored a review blurb from Tina Fey ("30 Rock") on the cover.

Here is everything we know so far about the film "Suncoast."

What We Think Suncoast Will Be About

There, she strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist (Harrelson) amid protests surrounding controversial medical cases.

Laura Linney Bids Farewell to ‘Ozark’ and Hello to the Walk of Fame
Image
On July 25, Laura Linney is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It’s exactly the kind of high-profile status symbol Wendy Byrde might finagle to burnish her place among Tinseltown’s most successful and respected, except that the actor earned the honor precisely for playing the master manipulator on “Ozark” (and dozens of other unforgettable roles) so convincingly. Recognition coincides with the end of the acclaimed Netflix series, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe and three Emmys for the final season. After decades of showing the strength of tender characters and the tenderness of strong ones, earning a star immortalizes Linney’s complexity, versatility and febrile intelligence.

Even as far back as Ivan Reitman’s “Dave,” in which she played the small but pivotal role of a government aide whose liaison with the president catalyzes the need for the title character to temporarily replace him,...

Billy Eichner at an event for The Oscars (2015)
Billy Eichner’s Rom-Com ‘Bros’ at Universal to Feature Entirely LGBTQ+ Cast, Luke Macfarlane Set as Co-Lead
Billy Eichner at an event for The Oscars (2015)
Billy Eichner’s upcoming studio romantic comedy “Bros” at Universal has set a principal cast that will be entirely LGBTQ+, and the studio has set Luke Macfarlane (“Brothers and Sisters”) as the lead alongside Eichner.

Nicholas Stoller is directing “Bros,” which also features a screenplay by Eichner. And the studio has already set the film for release on August 12, 2022.

Universal says that the LGBTQ+ cast of “Bros” will all play the principal heterosexual roles, which they say was a decision by the filmmakers and Universal to expand diversity and LGBTQ+ representation on screen.

The story however is that of two gay men hopefully, maybe, stumbling their way toward love, that is if they’re not too busy.

Also joining the cast are Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz and Guy Branum.

“I could not be more proud or excited about the historic nature of the all openly LGBTQ+ cast of ‘Bros,...

Bill Condon to Direct ‘Guys and Dolls’ Film for Tristar
Bill Condon
Academy Award winner Bill Condon will direct a film adaptation of “Guys and Dolls,” the classic Broadway musical and 1955 film of the same name, for TriStar Pictures, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

John Goldwyn and Marc Toberoff are set to produce the new adaptation for TriStar. Execs Nicole Brown and Shary Shirazi are overseeing for the studio.

In 2019, TriStar purchased the rights to the original short stories written by Damon Runyon that inspired the musical, as well as the Broadway musical book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows and its music by Frank Loesser. The studio also bought the remake rights to the 1955 film “Guys and Dolls,” as released by the Samuel Goldwyn Company.

Runyon originally wrote the short stories “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown,” “Pick the Winner” and “Blood Pressure” about a gambler and his relationship with a missionary girl. The stories are the...

Liam Neeson: The 5 Best & 5 Worst Fight Scenes Of His Career, Ranked
Liam Neeson
Content Warning: This article contains discussions/references to violence, kidnapping, and terrorism.

Liam Neeson initially garnered fame for his roles in films like Kinsey and Schindler's List. However, 2008's Taken changed the entire course of his career as the film turned him into a highly marketable action star. Other than Taken and its two sequels, Neeson appeared in a slew of crime and action films that required him to shoot down bad guys and deliver memorable one-liners.

Some of his recent action films have even transcended the tropes of a generic Liam Neeson action film. So, if he's battling wild wolves in The Grey, he's also foiling terrorist plans aboard an airplane in Non-Stop. All in all, Neeson is one of the few mainstream action stars who got their shot at the genre at quite an older age.

SAG Awards nominee profile: Laura Linney (‘Ozark’) could finally claim awards hardware for playing Wendy Byrde
Image
Three seasons in, Laura Linney still hasn’t bagged a single piece of awards hardware for playing Wendy Byrde on “Ozark.” But the tide might finally turn at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, where the actress racked up two nominations: one as a member of the Netflix series’s ensemble cast and one individually in the TV drama actress race. These are the eighth and ninth overall bids for the actress, who looks to scare up her second career victory.

Linney is up against four fellow Netflix actresses: her “Ozark” co-star Julia Garner and three women from “The Crown,” Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman and Emma Corrin. Of her category counterparts, only Anderson has won individually, having nabbed consecutive prizes for “The X-Files” in this race in 1997 and 1998. Colman has one victory under her belt as well as a part of “The Crown’s” ensemble, which won just last year.

Golden Globes nominee profile: Laura Linney (‘Ozark’) looks to bag 3rd career trophy for ruthless season 3 storyline
Image
Overlooked for “Ozark’s” first two seasons, Laura Linney has finally scared up her maiden Golden Globe bid for her fiery turn as the cunning Wendy Byrde on the gritty Netflix crime drama. This marks the lucky seventh nomination overall for the actress, who now looks to rake in her third career victory.

In the Best TV Drama Actress category, she faces off against Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”), Emma Corrin (“The Crown”) and Sarah Paulson (“Ratched”). Of this group, two-time nominee Comer and rookie contender Corrin are the only two who aren’t previous winners. The defending champ in this category for “The Crown,” Colman netted two additional victories for the miniseries “The Night Manager” in 2017 and feature film “The Favourite” in 2019, while Paulson triumphed for the anthology series “American Crime Story’s” first installment, “The People v. O.J. Simpson,” in 2017.

Laura Linney: Golden Globe win after Emmy loss for ‘Ozark’?
Image
Laura Linney is all but certain to earn her lucky seventh Golden Globe nomination this year. Surprisingly, it would be her first for “Ozark,” in which she has played the cunning Wendy Byrde for three seasons. While she did not end up winning the Emmy last September, the actress just picked up a Critics’ Choice Award nomination — her first for “Ozark” from that group — and she could be on the path to earning her third career Golden Globe.

Linney is beloved by the Golden Globes. She was first nominated on the film side for “You Can Count on Me” in 2001, followed by “Kinsey” in 2005 and “The Squid and the Whale” in 2006. She lost those three races but won on the TV side for the limited series “John Adams” in 2009 and the comedy series “The Big C” in 2011. Re-examining Kinsey
Image
“Am I normal? Am I interested in the right things? Do I do them the normal way?” Many people will ask these questions as they discover their sexuality, and in 2020 they are more likely than ever to find reassuring voices. Eighty years ago, however ,American biologist Alfred Kinsey (Liam Neeson) would have answered with simply, “I don’t know”. He could have speculated, but Kinsey was a man of science. He could not conclusively answer such questions because American society knew very little beyond the social norm of “man plus woman equals baby”.

Kinsey sought to change this societal ignorance with his 1948 book Sexual Behavior in the American Male, which was constructed using detailed, face-to-face interviews with over 5000 men across the United States. Sexual Behavior in the Human Female followed five years later, which applied a similar methodology to a sample of some 6000 women. But this is not where Kinsey,...

Dan Stevens, Mary Mack, Thomas Middleditch, and Sean Giambrone in Solar Opposites (2020)
Hulu New Releases: May 2020
Dan Stevens, Mary Mack, Thomas Middleditch, and Sean Giambrone in Solar Opposites (2020)
There are few surefire successes in television. It just so happens that with its new releases for May 2020, Hulu almost certainly found itself one. May 8 sees the debut of all eight episodes of Solar Opposites, the latest sci-fi animated effort from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. This is a brand new story featuring a family of aliens crashing to Earth and learning to live amongst the rest of us weirdos. But the animation style and sci-fi themes hew so closely to Rick and Morty that there’s no way this won’t be a hit.

On the off chance Solar Opposites doesn’t set the world ablaze, Hulu has some other intriguing content lottery tickets for May. The Great premieres on May 15 and is a comedic period piece about Catherine the Great starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. You can’t accuse Hulu of not taking big swings this month!

‘The Good Liar’ Film Review: Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen Wasted in Disappointing Crime Drama
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen in L'inganno perfetto (2019)
“So little is what it seems to be,” the press notes for “The Good Liar” promise. And that’s true, in the sense that one might expect a great deal more from a project that brings together so much talent.

Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen get to act opposite each other for the first time ever, under the direction of estimable filmmaker Bill Condon (“Kinsey”). Together, this trio boasts eight Oscar nominations. In fact, Condon won an Academy Award for writing “Gods and Monsters,” which also earned McKellen a nod.

So what strange sleight of hand conspired to drain all the life out of their torpid crime drama?

‘The Good Liar’ Trailer: Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen Play a Game of Cat and Mouse
Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen in L'inganno perfetto (2019)
Everyone knows Oscar voters love a dame. That’s Dame Helen Mirren to be precise, who stars alongside Sir Ian McKellen in the awards-friendly fall release “The Good Liar,” a tense romantic thriller from “Kinsey” director Bill Condon. The Oscar winner (Mirren) and two-time Oscar nominee (McKellen) play two people in a new courtship with deceptive underpinnings. Russell Tovey (“Looking”) and Jim Carter (“Downton Abbey”) round out a cast of heavy hitters that is sure to pique certain Oscar voters’ interest.

Per the official synopsis: “Career con artist Roy Courtnay (McKellen) can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish (Mirren) online. As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life.”

Condon reunites with McKellen for a fourth time since directing him in “Gods and Monsters,...
