The plot is a little thin but it doesn't have to be in-depth to get this film along. It follows Rats upon his release from Mountjoy Prison on his attempt to get his band together and make a break for it.
Spin the Bottle grows on you after a few times of watching it.. I think it's good for the Irish Film Industry to have films like this to be put out there. The more the merrier and I for one welcome Spin the Bottle. Good effort.
If you liked Paths to Freedom and though it had original ideas, good acting and dialogue - then feel free to go along and waste your money.
They wondered why the Irish film board didn't want to give them money! I wonder what made them change their mind and fund it eventually - it couldn't be that they changed their mind on it 'not being funny'.
If you like 'funny walks', bad acting, crap dialogue, stupid stories or feel like losing 90 minutes of your life - then this is yer man!
Enjoy (or not as the case may be)
There are some cameo appearances though out the movie like the late Gerry Ryan, Samantha Mumba and Louis Walsh. The movie is just a bit of fun and if you like inner city Dublin humour you will find this hilarious. This movie really didn't get enough recognition and I think it would be great if the character Rats resurfaced again.
I am giving this movie 8/10 as it is great Irish comedy and full of side splitting one liners like "ya look like Braveheart with a nappy on his head' and I am also a little biased. Please watch!
It was done on a low budget so obviously it's not as polished as most other productions, but with what they had it is definitely a cult Irish classic.
The lyrics of the songs featured in it are hilarious, but it definitely would not translate very well to a non-Irish audience. "You cultchie gaurds think you can come up here and act like narmal (sic) people!!"
And the cameo roles are great with Louis Walsh, Gerry Ryan and Miriam Callaghan really sending themselves up.
That's basically the plot but for me the humour that binds it together is what I loved about the film. As a Dublin 'cailin', i loved the dialogue and the irreverent depiction of a certain part of Dublin in the Noughties, and the low budget quality of this independent film suits it perfectly. I just wish I could find out where I can buy the DVD!

- QuizWhen Michael McElhatton was researching the prison scenes for this film he went to one of Ireland's Prisons. While he was there he met prisoners who were huge fans of the series Paths to Freedom (2000) in which Rats first appeared. Some of the prisoners had taken the character of Rats to their hearts that they wrote some of Rats' sayings on their cell walls.
- Curiosità sui creditiIn the closing credits, Peter McDonald's character name was spelled "Tommo" in the "Starring" section and "Tomo" in the full cast list which follows it.
