Through stories centered around monsters, serial killers, ghosts and demons, horror has a wide range of ideas, which has kept it alive and popular. The genre has also been aided by mastery of multiple genres at once, with all the best horror films fitting into other genres too.
Horror has always been known for its versatility and how well it compliments other genres, such as action, science fiction and thriller. In fact, sometimes the distinction can be so ambiguous that it causes a fan debate over whether a horror movie really belongs in the category, or if it's closer to sci-fi or action. Some entries in the genre would certainly make more sense with a different classification.

Despite having plenty of compelling heroes, the horror genre is best known for its vast - and terrifying - range of villains. Horror icons like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers dominate the genre with big, sprawling franchises revolving around their murders. However, with such a saturated genre, too many great slasher characters have flown under the radar of many fans. Some of these characters could carry their own franchise if given more opportunities.
Horror has produced some of the scariest characters in appearance and actions. Though some of these characters only appeared as a one-off villains in a solo movie, others have managed to secure sequels. However, considering how cheap horror movies are to make compared to other genres, just having a sequel or even a small franchise doesn't mean a villain is well-known. Shoe-string budgets, tough competition, and even bad movies can hinder the success of these characters.

Now entering its third season, Syfy’s Face Off is part Project Runway and part Monster Man, which recently completed a mostly entertaining first season on the network. The older show kicks off its new season on Tuesday, August 21st. Anyone interested in make-up effects will find it more than worth their while.
The tried and true reality show structure is firmly in place. The show cuts between the 12 contestants introducing themselves while they meet one another for the first time at a swanky rooftop party in Los Angeles. They range from a 20 year-old with little experience to people well into their 40s with significant industry experience.
The party is hosted by Sean Astin. He also judges their first competition. Little time is wasted on the setup which is nice. For their first challenge the contestants need to create original face make-up incorporating an item from the party.

Yesterday you may have read about the Horror Channel’s upcoming Director’s Night season, which kicks off Tonight with Jake West, director of Doghouse, Evil Aliens and Razor Blade Smile, who will be introducing his ‘splatstick’ horror-comedy Evil Aliens. In addition to that, Jake will introduce two of his favourite horror films, Monster Man and Society, all of which air tonight from 9pm.
Well thanks to the generous folks at the Horror Channel and, of course, Jake West, we got a chance to put some questions to him about his films past and present, as well as ask about his influences and some of his other favourite scary movies… and we got it all on video! Check it out (be aware this does containing some swearing and content that some may feel is Nsfw):

Michael Davis, writer and director of the Clive Owen action flick Shoot ‘Em Up, has signed on to helm a remake of the 1981 Sean Connery space western Outland. Chad St. John, who scripted the WB drama The Days Before, is on board to write the screenplay. The original, which drew comparisons to High Noon, starred Connery as a marshal on one of Jupiter's moons who is investigating mysterious deaths. He's forced to take on the colony's corporate administrators alone when the rest of the colonists refuse to help. The new take expands the concept, while keeping the original's theme. The story takes place in an orbiting city around the moon, where a cop uncovers a murderous conspiracy endangering the entire city. With a week before his retirement back to Earth, our hero has to choose between walking away with his wife, or taking on a private army with his overachieving ex-partner and wife's former boyfriend.

Dream 'Monster' invading world
MILAN -- Los Angeles-based production and international sales company Dream Entertainment said Sunday that it has closed a slew of territories for its horror picture Monster Man in an early bout of MIFED dealmaking. The movie has been sold to Kinowelt in Germany, Gaga in Japan and Magna Pacific in Australia, with Les Films de l'Elysee picking up Benelux rights. Deals were also closed for Scandinavia (Scanbox) South Africa (Warner Newmetro), Mexico (Gussi), Greece (Village Roadshow), as well as Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and the Middle East. Directed by Michael Davis, Monster Man follows two university buddies on a cross-country drive with a sexy, mysterious hitch-hiker. Their trip takes a bad turn when a Big Black truck starts following them. The film stars Eric Jungmann, Justin Ulrich and Aimee Brooks. The movie has been selected for the Sitges Film Festival, which specializes in fantasy and horror and which unspools in Spain at the end of this month. The deals were announced by Dream's chairman and CEO Ehud Bleiberg and president Yitzhak Ginsberg. "These robust sales prove once again that in today's market -- both domestic and international -- a good horror film has legs," Bleiberg said. Dream Entertainment co-produced the movie with Lions Gate Films, which will distribute in North America. The film's producers are Bleiberg, Ginsberg and Larry Rattner.
