It's pretty basic here. You have a Bill Plympton movie. You know what to expect – complete rampant insanity from the mind of a mad genius.

If Plympton is making pastiche, he's also having a laugh at a universal experience that for a lot of people was probably pretty crummy. Apparently, it was a little crummier for him.

Too glib to qualify as satire, Hair High nails the high school experience.

The terrain is so familiar that it has a slightly stifling effect, even in Mr. Plympton’s demented hands. We long ago loved these characters to death.
