Ana

In 1955, the Eastern Germany sponsored an international production called "Die Windrose" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051197/), aka "A Rosa-dos-Ventos" (Brazil) and "Rose of the Winds", and composed of short episodes from different parts of the world. Alex Viany, who was a member of the Communist Party, was invited to direct the Brazilian segment, written by Jorge Amado, Alberto Cavalcanti and Trigueirinho Neto. Presenting Vanja Orico in the role of Ana, this episode shows the tough life of the migrants from the drought areas of Northeastern of Brazil trying to have a better life in a great city, São Paulo, and their real final destination as slaves in the fields of a powerful "colonel" (pejorative name of the powerful landlords of the North and Northeastern of Brazil). The sad story is supported by very realistic interpretations that recalls the Italian Neo-Realism, and magnificent cinematography. As a curiosity for the overseas, the truck where the migrants travel is called "pau-de-arara", which is the piece of the wood in the cages where macaws may live. Unfortunately, in 2006, we still have this type of exploitation of the capital in my country. My vote is nine.
