For those who experienced the dawn of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, "Pilotwings" was often a launch title that showcased the console's impressive capabilities in a uniquely engaging way. Forget straightforward platforming; "Pilotwings" offered a refreshing departure, inviting players to take to the skies in a variety of aircraft and master the art of flight, landing, and aerial acrobatics. The sheer joy of soaring through the vibrant environments, whether strapped into a hang glider, maneuvering a rocket belt, or piloting a light plane, was undeniably captivating and provided hours of addictive fun. Each vehicle offered a distinct feel and challenge, encouraging players to hone their skills and strive for perfect scores across a range of increasingly demanding missions.
Visually, "Pilotwings" was a standout title in the early SNES library. Utilizing the console's Mode 7 graphics, the game presented a pseudo-3D perspective that was remarkably immersive for its time. The ground below smoothly scaled and rotated as you flew overhead, creating a convincing sense of depth and movement. While the polygonal graphics of later 3D games were still on the horizon, "Pilotwings" cleverly employed sprite scaling and rotation to deliver a visually impressive and fluid experience. From the detailed islands and landscapes to the charming character animations, the game was a testament to the graphical prowess of the SNES and left a lasting impression on players accustomed to the 2D worlds of previous consoles.
More than just a technical showcase, "Pilotwings" was simply a blast to play. The diverse mission objectives, ranging from precise landings to navigating obstacle courses and even engaging in lighthearted target shooting, kept the gameplay fresh and exciting. The sense of accomplishment after nailing a difficult landing or successfully executing a tricky maneuver was incredibly rewarding. Even the comical crash landings, often accompanied by humorous character reactions, added to the game's overall charm and lighthearted appeal. "Pilotwings" wasn't just about flying; it was about the freedom of exploration, the satisfaction of mastery, and the pure, unadulterated joy of taking to the virtual skies in a way that felt genuinely novel and exhilarating at the time.

Pilotwings is one of the greatest simulation games to hit the home systems and certainly one of the best games that ever came out for the SNES. The game revolves around you as a rookie pilot learning the ropes in ever tougher levels and tasks. At first you are able to just fly the biplane and jump with your parachute. Through the levels you will nail rings and floating balls to test your skills. If you pass, you'll continue to use those plus a rocket pack and glider. All these are used in various levels and on big Al's level's you must complete all 4 to move on. In each level you will be forced to perform at least adequately to obtain enough points to get the next class level of license and move on. If your really good you may be able to nail the bonus rounds that are in every level. These provide some interesting levels, like jumping with a penguin into a pool or using feathered wings to fly. After both of Big Al's levels you will get to fly a attack chopper on a deadly mission to rescue hostages, not easy. I got this game when it was new back in the day and is a classic for the SNES and still holds up today. Plenty of fun and excitement is just in flying around and messing up. If get a perfect on any of the levels watch your teacher's face ball. Awesome game 10/10. Perfect.
