Mark Roper's Darkest Hour

You may easily see this one on the shelves these days, being that it has been advertised to look like a "Pirates of the Caribbean" knockoff as to give it at least limited appeal. If for some reason you are appealed to it, (which isn't unlikely when there's a seemingly generic good time involved, as well as the hot lead actress on the cover of the box)I beg that you forget about it. This is poorly made, laughably uninspired and (most surprisingly) boring garbage.

Mark Roper has shown talent as a trend-following director. In 1995 he made a wonderfully action-packed little movie for New Line called "Human Timebomb" that featured skillfully executed, John Woo inspired action sequences strung together with a campy but fun story line. He knows what action fans want, but now I'm not so sure he can give it to them.

Thomas Ian Griffith plays a dreadfully dull neo-pirate (in 2001 they still didn't have a more contemporary sounding occupation name than pirate?) who is really just a boring, unlikeable, degenerate every-tool who happens to steal stuff. The movie that surrounds him fits the same character descriptions. Roper has lost any feel he ever may have had for atmosphere: the set design is unquestionably bad, as is the sound and cinematography.

Don't be fooled, this one is bad no matter how much you should want to see it.

Not worthy to watch.

Even the short role played by Sofía Mazagatos is not enough justification for wasting time on watching this movie. Flat characters, awful sound, a ridiculous script...you name it. It's there.

One man show.

This movie will obviously not make it to the big screen, however keep a look out for one of the cast in a theatre near you. Escaping from the London West End scene and performing his own stunts, Demetri Alexander makes his screen debut showing much promise for the future. Playing, as always, the villain he makes an otherwise average movie worth watching.

modern day pirate ends up searching for buried treasure

this is a movie about a modern day pirate(or at least, that's what he calls himself.really though he is simply a charter boat captain for hire and thief.his job does get him into some hairy situations, meaning a fair amount of action.there is even some intrigue and some romance as weals a hunt for buried treasure.captain Jefferey Thorpe(Thomas Ian Griffith) has 2 sidekicks who travel everywhere with him.mostly there for comic relief i guess.this has all the ingredients to be a great movie, yet it isn't.this whole sub genre of film has been done many times before,so there is little new or original in this movie. However, there is 1 thing this movie has going for it:Gerit Kling, who plays the dual role of Helna/Marlena and also the love interest of Thorpe.(Griffith)Kling is truly a stunning woman and when you combine that with her German accent,it's enough to make most men melt.(i did anyway)Griffith makes a credible action hero,if only the movie had something new to offer.despite the problems withe film,i'd still give it a 6/10,mostly for the beautiful love interest.

Great fun for all the family

Great movie for all the family, adventure and fun in the islands. Great scenery and car chases. Good use of Demetri Alexander is a revelation in his major motion picture debut, definitely one to keep an eye out for the future.
