Last Night

Although there were certainly enough shortfalls and problems to fill any number of foolish rant-critiques, the basic idea of the movie is what drew me in, personally.

The very concept of the last hours of humanity ... excites me, somehow, as if I wish it were already here so I could rest for awhile. Now, don't think of that last sentence as some emo/goth/suicidal "give-me-some-attention-or-i'll-cut-myself" spiel, but rather as a statement of the very human condition itself: Have you not been yearning for something? Have you not been wishing for some sort of conclusion to things? This movie, as simply another creation by humans, is of course imperfect in many ways, but it awakens certain thoughts which I, for one, have found latent for years now.

Just give it a chance, ignore the smut aspect of it, and think about what you would do if you knew everything would be over within the next day. Would you do your solemn duty like the gas company employee, or look for lots of sex, or simply take to the streets with a gun to revel in the slaughter? Myself, I would do none of the above. I would sit and meditate, and think about my life... and that's why I liked this movie so much: It made me think.

The two earlier comments seem to be for the other movie Last Night (1998/I) directed by Don McKellar, and not this movie Last Night (1998/II) directed by Neil Kinsella. They refer to characters and events that are in Last Night (1998/I) but are not listed as characters in Last Night (1998/II).

I tried to find out more about this movie, but it seems to have faded into obscurity, so I'm unable to even read a summary of it. One other cinema site even put Neil Kinsella as a director of Don McKellar's film, which is not the case in the credits I saw in McKellar's film.

Although this is not strictly a review of Kinsella's film, I do feel that my comment is more informative and useful than the two previous comments, because it is actually about this film. Sort of.
