Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley OM (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican singer, songwriter, guitarist, and activist. He was the front man, lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the ska, rock steady and reggae bands: The Wailers (1964 – 1974) and Bob Marley & the Wailers (1974 - 1981). He is the most widely known performer of ska/reggae music, and is often credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience.[1]

Marley's music includes the hits "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Three Little Birds", "Exodus", "Could You Be Loved", "Stir It Up", "Jamming", "Redemption Song", and "One Love".[2] His posthumous compilation album Legend (1984) is the best-selling reggae album ever, with sales of more than 12 million copies.

THE BOB MARLEY STORY is a concise document on the life of the "King of Reggae". Chronicling not only Marley's story, but the emergence of the early Rastafarian movement, this little package is pretty valuable to admirers of the form and students of Pan African history. Narrated by Race Today Collective Leader Darcus Howe, the work features footage from the coronation of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie and his visit to Jamaica in 1966, interesting glances at the perspectives of the Rastafarian culture, and interviews with Marley's mother Cedella Booker, Rita Marley, the late Peter Tosh and Joe Higgs, the Wailer's former voice coach. There's also about twenty seconds of footage of a very young Jimmy Cliff performing his song "One-Eyed Jacks" at a dance hall. Finally, there's Marley himself, a man born to be on camera and on stage, as well as some interesting old video of the original Wailers in studio sessions for Catch a Fire in the mid-1970s. This documentary has been eclipsed by the more widely known TIME WILL TELL, but it's a better and more informative film. And what can I say? It's Marley. If you're not entertained, you ain't right.
