this is based on a book daddy longlegs by jean Webster. one of shobana's and rahman's first movies. the story is of an orphan girl who has an anonymous benefactor who sends her to college. she communicates with him through her letters. when they meet, he recognizes her from the details in her letter but doesn't reveal himself. to make matters convenient, she is his niece's/sister's classmate. it was a big hit of its time in Malayalam cinema. the songs "oru madura kinavin" and "kastoori maan kurunne" were very popular. shobana still has the innocence in her eyes in this movie. there is some variation from the book. i loved the book and this movie is pretty close to it. shobana plays the orphan girl, mammootty the benefactor, royachan and rahman, the boy in love with shobana. rahman's role is not in the book. seema also appears in a few scenes as a doctor and this deviates from the book as well.

Shobhana was hardly 18 when she played this role . She is perfect for the simple innocent orphan . Mamooty is the son of her sponsor who continues his father's legacy albeit unwillingly . His brattish brother ( A very young Rahman ) also works with him. He sees Shobhana once and falls in love with her ( true to his young impulsive nature ) .

Mamooty meets Shobhana and recognizes her as his protege thanx to the clothes and watch he had sent for her . She barely acknowledges him initially . Their paths keep crossing . From here slowly starts a series of complex emotions between Shobhana , Mamooty and Rahman .

Seema comes in a small role as Mamooty's lover and the local doctor . They could not marry due to family pressure .

Shobhana jealous of the relation between Seema and Mamooty goes to her saying she is carrying his child .

A shocked Mamooty when he comes to know shouts and fights with Shobhana . All the while she is not aware that he is her sponsor . She keeps trying to search for him . Her orphanage is not allowed to give this info .

Finally sad and forlorn , when she is about to fly abroad to pursue her studies , Mamooty comes and reveals himself. Its not clear if finally they unite .

Over all a fine movie . Rahman is cute as the confused lovelorn chap paralelly trying to impress his big brother . Unni mary comes in a short role as Mamooty's sister . She wears nice soft sarees to show off her rich status . The dependable Sukumari has a short role as their mother .

Some hummable songs makes this a family watch .

The most beautiful love story I have ever watched. The love story of handsome Roy and innocent Sherly.Mammotty looks so charming and all the actors did their best in this movie.Padmarajan and I V Sasi combo worked well.Truely an evergreen love story.

IV Sasi - Padmarajan - Mammootty legendary trio has produced a brilliantly written light hearted love story. main highlight of the movie is the cuteness and matured performance of teenaged sobhana. a must watch movie for all movie lovers
