All for a wife!
To put it in one line, this film is the story of a civilian who wants to marry the only daughter of a retired military colonel, who believes that civilians are inferior to military personnel.
The Plot
Chandar(Randhir Kapoor) is an eligible bachelor, who faces the hurdle of Mangal in his janamkundali. He is desperate to get a wife for himself, but everytime he tries, he falls flat on his face due to the position of the stars when he was born. His quest for a Mangali Kanya makes him readily accept the offer of his friend Gafoorbhai(Deven Verma), who brings Chandar to the happening city of Bombay to showcase his singing talent. What strikes him when he sees Asha(Poonam Dhillon) is not exactly cupid's arrow in the heart, but rather a golf ball on his head. After getting positive signals from Asha about his love, he learns about her father, a strict military fanatic, ironically named Colonel Mangal Singh(Sanjeev Kumar). What follows is the clash of Chandar and Colonel Mangal Singh. In his endeavours to realize his dream of marrying his love, Chandar is helped by his friends Gafoorbhai and Nisha(Simi Garewal), and most importantly, Asha's granny(Dina Pathak). Chandar's attempts to marry his sweetheart takes him and the viewer through hilarious situations, where Chandar acts as a phony military captain, only to be caught, and makes fake janamkundali, only to find that his brilliant idea has boomeranged.
A second storyline develops when Colonel Mangal Singh's endeavours to find a suitable military son-in-law takes him to a marriage bureau, where the lady at the marriage bureau(Shashikala) falls in love with the colonel.
Confusion is added to chaos when a small-time fraud Shankar(also acted by Sanjeev Kumar) decides to use his similarity to the colonel to earn a few fast bucks. The comic spree finally ends into a chase sequence, with everyone following everyone and finally landing in a swimming pool, where the mystery of who-the-hell-is-the-real-colonel is solved by the colonel's mother in a hilarious manner. Finally, the whole thing ends with a wife for Chandar, a wife for the colonel, and a honeymoon in jail for the fraud and his sweetheart Mithu(Yogeeta Bali).
The Performances
Randhir Kapoor as Chandar suits his role. His face is enough to make the audience laugh. Poonam Dhillon looks pretty, but nothing remarkable in the acting department. Deven Verma as Gafoorbhai is a treat. Rajinder Nath as Colonel Mangal Singh's orderly Virsen is as usual upto his monkey tricks. Dina Pathak and Simi Garewal support the film ably.
But, as many of you must have guessed, the cake is taken by the one and only Haribhai Jariwala, alias Sanjeev Kumar. His performances as both, the high society colonel and the small time swindler Shankar, are fantastic, to say the least. The way he brings about the small changes in these two characters is remarkable. May it be the way they carry themselves, the way they dress, the way they speak, even the way they call the orderly, the viewer can identify the small differences in the class of the retired colonel and the ruggedness of the swindler.
The other Credits
This film was produced under the banner of the RK Films. Directed by Rahul Rawail, he does okay. Nothing to write home about.
The worst part of the film is the editing. Edited by Shankar Hurde, the cuts are jerky at some places.
The cinematography by Tara Dutt is good.
The lyrics by Nida Fazli and Vithalbhai Patel are soulful.
The music by R. D. Burman is very tuneful.
In Conclusion
All in all, Biwi-O-Biwi is a great way to laugh away your worries. Highly recommended!
