Nipernaadi

When I first saw the movie I was about 13 years old and it didn't impress me much. Later when I read the book (by A. Gailit) I realized that I want to see that movie again. Luckily it was shown on television a few days later and I was given my chance to see it again. When the movie started I realized that: "Yeah! I love that movie! Thank you television-man for showing it to me..." The movie is just perfect. Some little techincal problems could be seen, but they don't jump into your eye. The main thing that attracts you about this movie are the actors and most beautiful music composed for the movie (by R. Kangro and A. Valkonen). The movie is based on a novel by A. Gailit and the story is about an estonian don Juan, who actually is a writer, who leaves home in spring and is brought home again in autumn, by his wife. Toomas Nipernaadi is a mysterious, funny and amusing character who makes strangers fall in love with him and after that he leaves the women not saying a word.

I really recommend it, because it's just perfect. It makes you want to act like Nipernaadi. Go out in spring, only your clothes on, and come back when the first snow covers the landscape.

Nipernaadi, directed by Kaljo Kiisk, is a charming and poetic Estonian film based on the novel by August Gailit. The movie follows the mysterious and joyful wanderer Toomas Nipernaadi as he travels through Estonia during the summer. He has no specific destination, only the open road ahead. Nipernaadi visits farms and small villages, meets lonely women, and tells them magical stories that fill them with hope and dreams. But just as quickly as he enters their lives, he leaves, continuing his journey and leaving broken hearts behind.

Although the film begins as a light-hearted comedy, it slowly reveals a deeper, more emotional side. Nipernaadi is not just a cheerful traveller-he is also a man escaping from reality, a dreamer who becomes lost in his own lies. The more he speaks, the more he begins to believe his own stories. The viewer is left wondering: is Nipernaadi a kind-hearted romantic or just a selfish man running from his responsibilities?

Tõnu Kark gives a fantastic performance in the lead role, showing both charm and sadness in his character. The film is beautifully shot, with stunning Estonian landscapes and an unforgettable soundtrack that adds emotion and depth to the story. The director's love for the book shines through, creating a film full of warmth, imagination, and soul.

Nipernaadi is more than just a road movie-it's a story about longing, freedom, and the price of dreams. It is a true classic of Estonian cinema, and a must-see for anyone interested in poetic storytelling and strong character-driven films. "Only" 7 points from me as I am unable to fully identify myself with such topics and dreams.

Toomas Nipernaadi is a mysterious, but joyful man, who travels from one place to another. He has always some interesting and fantastic stories to tell, and he can make women go crazy.

The film starts like lighthearted comedy, but soon we start to learn more and more about Nipernaadi, the main protagonist, but at the same time not knowing who he actually is. Everywhere he leaves he leaves behind broken hearts and disappointment. The farther his travels take him and the more fantastic his stories are getting, the more he seems to loose himself. He starts to tell his stories with such an energy that it seems he starts to believe them himself, although they are all just fairy tales.

Although enjoyable screwball adventure film it is more deep psychological study of a character - is he sociopath or just simply irresponsible man who leaves his family behind every summer.

Tõnu Kark gives amazing performance, and wonderful landscape shots accompanied with great soundtrack. 'The Adventurer' remains one of the best Estonian language films.
