Bobby Flay in The Next Food Network Star (2005)
We're Dishing Out the Best Secrets About Beat Bobby Flay
Bobby Flay in The Next Food Network Star (2005)
A Michelin star is nice. A James Beard, pretty great as well. But for some chefs nothing feels quite as sweet as besting Bobby Flay. Since 2013, the Iron Chef, a three-time James Beard honoree himself, has been taking on challengers with his Food Network series, Beating Bobby Flay, a natural extension of the head-to-head face-offs he engaged in on Iron Chef and Throwdown With Bobby Flay. The show's recipe is fairly easy. Each half-hour episode starts with two cooks battling it out to create a meal using a featured ingredient. Once a winner has been determined by the guest judges—everyone from Chrissy Teigen to Sophia...

Robin Williams: A History in 15 Jokes
Image
After the outpouring of grief and sadness over Robin Williams’ death by suicide in 2014, it’s been incredibly easy to forget the white-hot spark of life that endeared this performer to audiences to begin with.

This collection of bits — big and small, silly and poignant — touch on everything from his substance-enhanced blasts of the Seventies to measured performances for big crowds in the last several years. Taken as a whole, the one-liners and epic rants remind us of the guy who gave himself to the stage and the crowd, improvising...

‘Selena + Chef’: Selena Gomez Details “Very Odd” Process Of Filming HBO Max Cooking Show While Under Lockdown – TCA
Image
Selena Gomez busts out her cooking chops in the new HBO Max series Selena + Chef. From perfecting French omelettes to undercooking cheese soufflés, the singer said that testing her culinary skills helped get her out of the quarantine rut.

“I was definitely getting down and a lot is going on,” the singer said during HBO’s TCA session on Wednesday. “[The show] was an opportunity to make something that could make people smile.”

The Dolittle star, joined by producer Aaron Saidman and chef Antonia Lofaso, shared that her first unscripted series afforded her the skills and confidence to take on challenging dishes. While some of the show’s featured recipes, including one for a spicy miso ramen, have become staples for the singer, Gomez said she intends on staying away from others.

“I really, really didn’t like that. It’s a whole process never doing again in my life,” Gomez said...

Guy Fieri
Guy Fieri Has a Special Recipe for Comfort-Food TV
Guy Fieri
Before Guy Fieri ever wrapped his mouth around the smoked-wing nachos or Nashville hot fried chicken he regularly nibbles on TV, he had to navigate the twists of the pretzel business.

When he was around ten years old, Fieri’s parents took him on a ski trip, and would essentially let him wander as he saw fit for most of the day. He would eat a big pretzel for lunch. “Have you ever had them?” he recalls asking his parents. “They are steamed. They’ve got salt on them.” He had never been to New York and “I never knew what a pretzel was. I thought a pretzel was crunchy,” he says in a recent interview outside a cluster of very busy Food Network kitchens in New York. “My dad says, ‘If you’re such a fan of these pretzels, why don’t you own a pretzel business when we get back home?...

Miptv: Japan’s ‘Rolling Kitchen’ Launched by Endemol Shine
Endemol Shine Group has acquired the format rights for hit Japanese cookery show “The Rolling Kitchen” from Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation. It will represent the title outside Japan and launch the format at Miptv in Cannes next week.

“The Rolling Kitchen” is a studio-based cooking series from the director of “Iron Chef” that sees couples competing to create the best dish to win a cash prize. Every ten minutes the kitchen is rotated by 180 degrees requiring each contestant to take over their partner’s recipe where they left it, guess the cooking method, and attempt to complete the dish.

“The series has been a huge hit here in Japan and we’re confident that the show will be equally successful in other markets,” said Kazuo Tani, director of the content business department at Yomiuri. “The...

Critics Pick the Best, Most Addictive Reality Competition Shows — IndieWire Survey
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.

This week’s question: What is your favorite reality competition show? Why? (Current and older shows apply.)

Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider

Ready, set … relax! It’s “The Great British Baking Show” (or “Bake Off”), of course. It speaks to the very heart of my Anglophilia, but I’m also someone who doesn’t normally watch any baking or competition shows. I am, however, a devotee of “Gbbo” It is perhaps the most serene and happiest show on television, and so different from American (or even UK) series of a similar vein. The judges are hard but fair, everyone is so encouraging, and there is never a desire to humiliate anyone. “You are usually so good, you just let yourself down a little,” is the worst one might hear when presenting a disaster of a showstopper.

Anthony Bourdain Redefined How TV Presents Chefs and Tackles Food Shows
Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain had a profound influence on television during his 16 years on the air, thanks to his immense talent and the fortuitous timing of his rise to prominence.

Bourdain parlayed the success of his 2000 memoir “Kitchen Confidential” into his first TV series just as the expansion of the cable TV universe created huge new demand for all manner of niche programming. Food Network and other lifestyle-focused cablers such as Bravo and TLC grew by leaps and bounds in the early 2000s, which helped to fuel mainstream interest in the culinary world and its stars. This expansion opened the door for Bourdain to thrive in his signature hybrid food-travelogue format.

“He shows you that there was a story behind the chef and a story behind every plate of food,” says Allen Salkin, a veteran food writer and author of the Food Network history “From Scratch.”

“Even a show like ‘Top Chef...

Ready, set, go for Sci Fi 'Run'
Sci Fi Channel has greenlighted a pilot for the reality competition series Run for Money, which pits contestants against one another in the quest for cash prizes as they are stalked by relentless "hunters."

Run for Money, based on a successful Japanese format from Fuji Television (Iron Chef), takes place over 60 minutes of real time in landmark locations. As the clock winds down, the competition gets harder as more hunters appear on the streets, the game perimeter gets smaller and tasks are assigned that test contestants' nerves.

Contestants earn money for every second they "stay alive" and may opt out of the competition. If they keep playing and are overrun by a hunter, they lose everything. The last person standing takes the prize.

" 'Run for Money' is a fun, fast-paced, thriller of a show and fits nicely with our reality agenda of putting ordinary people in wild, extraordinary situations," Sci Fi executive vp original programming Mark Stern said. "It's high-adrenaline fun: part sport, part real-life video game."

Run for Money, announced this year as part of the network's development slate, is executive produced by Scott Messick.
