Why is everyone convinced this isn't available on DVD when IT IS?
Look at this website http://www.britishanimationawards.com
click on 'Buy Animation Classics' link on left hand side,
and you'll find "Skywhales" is listed amongst the contents for British Animation Classics Vol. 1 !
It's a British issue, but it is in fact a Region '0' NTSC release!
I know. I've got one. I didn't know about it either, until I emailed co-director Derek Hayes, who told me all about it.
I saw this in the cinema in 1983 as a support to... I cannot remember. I only remember this masterpiece!

Hello ! If this is still open I would love to hear from other s who were very influenced by this incredible film I have been searching for it since the 80 ,s and can't find anyone else that actually saw it on TV It was so unusual for that time and I loved it and never forgot the really strange concepts that were sad and deeply meaningful , extremely thought provoking.
This is only my own interpretation of this amazing story It seems to depict the whole circle of life - the innocents the lesser beings - the strong and the powerful the System that controls the population The rules applied and how despite the population being terrified and dreading obeying fond of the rules , no one stands up against the system to change anything The beauty of those large and free sky whales soaring in the sky and space and the horror of the hunting of these beautiful creatures The Hunter going out on his whale hunting airship in the alien universal sky carrying out the usual ritual Only to end up being sacrificed himself in the next stage of the tradition forced to fall down a deep tunnel And in the end resurfacing out the other end totally transformed into a Skywhale himself and beginning a new life dieting in the alien universe This is where I feel it portrayed a re cycling of life a type of re incarnation perhaps A way out if a cruel controlled way of life.

This is a wonderful movie - very atmospheric. I wish short films like this would get the attention they deserve. I sure wish I had a copy on VHS or DVD, but all I have are my memory of one viewing of this movie back in the '80s.
There are so many bad movies that make it to VHS and DVD, what a pity then that classics such as this seem destined to fade away into nonexistence.

I thought I saw this before 1983 but what the heck. It was a trailer to some main billing at my local cinema and it totally captured my imagination; so much so I can't remember the main film. Finally, through the wonders of the internet I managed to get a copy on NTSC video from the states and yes, it's stood the test of time. It has lost none of it's charm. A great short animation. What really made me realise this was a simple story told well was that my 3 year old daughter watched it and was moved to tears (though she couldn't say why). Recommended.
Until recently I thought I had actually dreamt this story! I'd tried to look this up so many times but I guess I was a letter or space away from "Skywhales". I was so close to drawing it up as a comic and using it as my own work - glad I decided to have one last look before I did.
I must have been about 5 when I saw this on TV (I was born in 1982) and have vividly remembered it since. I remember it being very moving (and creepy), I think it made me cry too.
I've looked around and it seems pretty hard to find a copy, thankfully I've found it on YouTube. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this but here goes; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVmKhNG6S3o
I haven't watched it yet because this is one memory I don't want to ruin.
