The infamous Satanic Panic is often referred to as the 20th century equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials, with innocent heavy metal fans and Dungeons & Dragons players being accused of worshipping Satan while apocalyptic conspiracy theories about the rise of the Antichrist and the supposed “Mark of the Beast” ran rampant amongst radical believers. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that horror cinema played an accidentally crucial role in inspiring this regrettable era of prejudice and misinformation.

In fact, there are a handful of specific horror films that informed most of the fears we now associate with the Satanic Panic, with some of the most influential being Richard Donner’s 1977 classic The Omen and its numerous follow-ups. George Coe, an actor whose long and eclectic career earned him legions of fans spanning several different generations, has died. He was 86.

Coe spent more than 50 years acting both in front of the camera as well as through voiceover work, turning in defining performances in multiple media and genres. He began his career on Broadway in 1957 opposite Angela Lansbury in the original cast of "Mame," and went on to star in "On the Twentieth Century" and "Company," among other shows.

In television, Coe made history as one of the original cast members of "Saturday Night Live," debuting with the Not Ready for Prime Time Players on the show's first episode in 1975. He appeared in numerous other television series over the years, with roles on shows including "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Murder, She Wrote," "Celebrity Deathmatch," "Bones," "Grey's Anatomy," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Gilmore Girls," "The Golden Girls," and "The West Wing.

Writer/producer/director John Fasano, best known for his work in the horror genre, died in his sleep Saturday night at the age of 52, his attorney Craig Baumgarten confirmed. No cause of death was available. Fasano was nominated for a Writers Guild Award in 1996 for writing the teleplay for The Hunchback for TNT. He also had a hand in more than 40 other film and TV projects, including writing the hit Tom Selleck TV movie Stone Cold, Iraq war TV docudramas Saving Jessica Lynch and The Hunt for Saddam, and films including Alien 3, Meggido: The Omega Code 2, Darkness Falls and Another 48 Hours. A while back we got to see the first footage from the remake of Left Behind featuring Cage uttering something along the lines of "If my wife had to leave me for another man, it might as well be Jesus." Keep in mind the film is not meant to be a comedy.

No. This Left Behind is from the same people responsible for the Kirk Cameron series, but this time they're aiming for more secular viewers by making the film a bit less preachy and a bit more disaster-y. One look at the trailer, and yes, indeed, "disaster" comes to mind.

We should clarify that when we say that the trailer for The Final Judgement is for a Japanese spiritual thriller, we do not mean ghosts and goblins but religion: Jesus, Buddha, Muhammad. The whole lot. I do not know if any of the other world religions make such movies, but this reminds me of the terrible Christian Left Behind movies (the first one starred Kirk Cameron - thumbs up!) and one called The Omega Code, which thankfully I never saw on the shelves of the library at my place of worship. So why write about The Final Judgement at all? Well, according to our source this movie is one of the first of its kind in Japan to be funded and made by a religious organization....
