Tom Cruise Reveals How They Shot the Craziest Stunt in ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’
Image
It was inevitable. On Wednesday at Cannes at the packed grand théâtre Lumière, Christopher McQuarrie, wearing a pale peach suit, measuredly answered questions from French journalist Didier Allouch about his writing and directing career, from “The Usual Suspects” (social media would give away the twisty ending today) and “The Way of the Gun” with Benicio del Toro, to collaborating with Tom Cruise on 11 movies. Then his star popped in, sporting a short-sleeved maroon ensemble, to hijack the conversation.

While Cruise and McQuarrie say the right things about respecting each other, it’s clear how much power Cruise has over the “Mission” franchise, now in its eighth iteration. While “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” is billed as the finale, a special IMAX screening later that evening played rousingly and offered an open-ended conclusion. (The $400 million film was shot in IMAX.) After a London premiere and buzzy Cannes launch, the movie...

Reese Witherspoon’s Daughter Ava Wants Nothing To Do With Dad Ryan Phillippe

Once-upon-a-time, Ryan Phillippe seemed to have the most beautiful relationship with daughter Ava, but those days are long gone according to a source speaking to Daily Mail about the matter.

In fact, both father and daughter haven’t seen or spoken to each other in two years. That’s a bloody long time if you ask me.

Ava Phillippe Estranged From Famous Father Over His Appalling Treatment of Women

Ava Phillippe is 25 and thus can make her own decisions and choose who and what she wants in her life and for herself. If her father is going to go around treating women badly, then she really doesn’t have anything to do with him.

“She has no contact with him and rarely mentions him. Ryan hasn’t been a present father figure in her life for years,” the Daily Mail source revealed. With the duo being so tight knit just a number of years ago,...

His family confirmed on Monday, April 14, that Katt died by suicide earlier this month. His bio information was furnished by his family, and Deadline can follow with some quotes by the directors he worked with most often.

Nicky Katt at an event for Solaris (2002)
Nicky Katt, an actor recognized for his work in film and television across several decades, died on April 8 in Burbank. He was 54. His death was confirmed by friends and attorney John Sloss. Official confirmation and cause of death have not been publicly disclosed.

Katt began performing as a child, with early appearances on television and small roles in Gremlins and The ’Burbs. He went on to become a regular presence in films that favored intense, edgy characters. He was known for portraying antagonists, loners, and unpredictable figures, often grounding those performances in realism and sharp timing.

One of his most widely recognized roles came on Boston Public, where he played Harry Senate, a geology teacher assigned to a group of troubled students in a basement classroom referred to as “the dungeon.” The series, created by David E. Kelley, aired in the early 2000s. After three seasons, the character was written...

Nicky Katt, well-loved indie character actor from Dazed and Confused & Boiler Room, dead at 54
Image
If you’re like me, and you grew up on a steady diet of nineties indie films, Nicky Katt was a familiar face. While rarely the lead, Katt could always be relied on to contribute memorable character roles to some of the coolest movies of the era, and now Deadline is reporting that the actor has died at only 54 years old. No news on the cause of death has been released, but it’s a sad loss for the industry – as far as I’m concerned, he never really got his due.

Most of you reading this will probably remember him best for his role in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused, where he played a “greaser” wannabe fifties throwback who beat up Adam Goldberg’s character after getting a beer poured on his head. For my money, one of Katt’s best roles was in The Limey, where he...

An Actor’s Actor, Nicky Katt, Dies At 54: Sources
Image
Still working to get official confirmation and cause of death, but I can report from sources that veteran actor Nicky Katt has passed away, at age 54. Katt will quickly to mind for his memorable turn as the high school Texan tough Clint Bruno, who picks a fight with Adam Goldberg’s Mike Newhouse, gets a beer poured over his head, and pummels the existentially tortured teen in Rick Linklater’s 1993 gem Dazed and Confused.

Matthew McConaughey and Nicky Katt in ‘Dazed and Confused’

He was a go-to guy for Linklater and a coterie of filmmakers that includes Steven Soderbergh, Christopher Nolan, Robert Rodriguez and David Gordon Green. Each cast Katt on multiple occasions. He is also remembered for his role as Harry Senate in several seasons of Boston Public. His specialty seemed to be edgy tough guys, roles he played in films including A Time to Kill and Boiler Room.

Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Six years have passed since Tom Cruise announced that the seventh and eighth films in the Mission: Impossible franchise would be shot back-to-back, and he has been in production on these films for a long time. We saw Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning back in 2024, and now the follow-up, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, is almost ready to make its way out into the world, heading toward a May 23rd release date. This is a huge release for Paramount Pictures, so of course they focused on it in a major way during their panel at the CinemaCon event, showing attendees a new trailer.

Cruise was in attendance for the panel and got his appearance started by leading a moment of silence to honor his late Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick co-star Val Kilmer. JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray reports, “Tom Cruise showed up in person and the exhibitors went nuts.

Benicio Del Toro
10 Best Benicio del Toro Performances, Ranked
Benicio Del Toro
Few actors’ screen presence reverberates with such genuine intensity as Benicio del Toro. Like Gary Oldman, Denzel Washington, Toshiro Mifune, Mads Mikkelsen, and so on. I feel Benecio del Toro is almost always good, irrespective of the quality of the film built around his character. Born in Puerto Rico on February 19, 1967, to lawyer parents, Benicio del Toro was a basketball player in school. Benicio del Toro was studying business at the University of California, but his interest in acting soon made him drop out and study acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory with Arthur Mendoza. In the late 1980s, Benicio del Toro started appearing in TV shows like Miami Vice and Private Eye.

Benecio del Toro was recognized as a promising performer in his second movie role, where he played Dario, a vicious enforcer of a drug kingpin in Timothy Dalton’s James Bond movie License to Kill (1989). Though the...

Way of the Gun: Rasoulof’s Bold, Blunt Indictment of Iranian Regime

There’s been little opportunity for artists to clearly or critically speak truth to power in post-revolutionary Iran, where filmmakers and actors are often censored through brute force. Anything considered as propaganda against the state can irreparably affect one’s career, which is why Iranian cinema, like a lot of films made by artists suppressed by political terror, often moves in the realm of metaphor, where intentions and themes are coded. Until now. With his tenth feature film, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Mohammad Rasoulof launches what constitutes an artistic missile into this supposedly omnipotent dominion, and seems to have drop kicked the hornet’s nest.…...

Stephen King Praises Gruesome Western with Kurt Russell
Image
Stephen King, the author responsible for horror bestsellers like The Shining, It, Pet Sematary, and Carrie, among others, is no stranger to the appraisal of horror movies. His latest endorsement was for Bone Tomahawk, the Western horror film directed by S. Craig Zahler, which he has called "well worth watching." Using his usual channel of communication, his X account, King wrote a few words of appreciation for the film that, in 2015, shocked every viewer who saw it. The reason? Let King tell you in his post.

King took almost eight years to claim his love for the film, but it's never too late for cult horror films that feel as original as Bone Tomahawk. He was also quite clear about the film's noteworthy gory scene. In his post, the horror author says:

Bone Tomahawk: I was expecting nothing but a time-passer on a rainy Wednesday morning, and got a low-budget Western epic.

Let’s Rank the Quentin Tarantino Knockoffs of the ’90s
Image
Quentin Tarantino‘s 1994 sophomore feature Pulp Fiction wasn’t just a major break out hit. It changed the face of cinema in the 1990s, both by helping bring attention to indie and foreign films, and by inspiring a host imitators. When audiences lined up to watch Tarantino’s bloody, whip-smart movie, studios rushed to fill theaters and video stores with more stories about loquacious hitmen, monologuing bank robbers, and foul-mouthed gun molls.

In most cases, these knockoffs provided cheap thrills, heavy on the violence and pop-cultural references but low on Tarantino’s sense of composition and ear for unique dialogue. In the best cases, Pulp Fiction‘s success made way for other great movies to get made, oddball films ignored by the studios until Tarantino convinced them that they could make money.

Here are the fifteen best Pulp Fiction influenced movies of the 1990s, those that stand on their own...

“It was Kurosawa’s Wolverine”: Hugh Jackman’s ‘Logan’ Might Have Never Happened if Fox Went With Darren Aronofsky As Per Their Original Plan
Image
When Hugh Jackman bid farewell to his iconic role as Wolverine in the 2017 flick Logan, fans were struck by a bittersweet feeling. The movie proved to be an appropriate goodbye to the much-loved character, revealing a more vulnerable and emotional side to the clawed mutant. However, what many fans might not know is that The Wolverine couldn’t have taken place if Fox had adhered to their original plan to have Darren Aronofsky helm the 2013 flick.

The Wolverine, a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), was originally slated to be directed by Aronofsky, who is best known for his dark and intense movies like Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream. But, as fate would have it, the director eventually dropped out of the project in order to allow James Mangold to step in and take the reins.

Get Carter: Revisiting One Of Sylvester Stallone’s Most Underrated Movies
Image
Copland was supposed to be Sylvester Stallone’s comeback movie. Despite earning decent box office and generating Sly’s best reviews in decades, it seemed to be the final nail in his coffin as a leading man, and I don’t understand why. Before Copland, Stallone was headlining huge action movies like Daylight and Judge Dredd, and while they underperformed domestically and overseas, they were still big. One would think that Stallone would have been given an old-school action film to revive his career, but all of a sudden, he was slotted into cheap movies, such as the slasher thriller D-tox, which is also called Eye See You. That movie was so bad that it went direct-to-video, which pretty much meant the end of Stallone’s career for half a dozen years until he managed a major comeback with Rocky Balboa. It would get pretty dire for Sly, but Warner Bros...

10 Action Movies Where The Action Is Realistic
Image
Action movies often struggle to create realistic stunts and action sequences, but some films manage to strike a balance between spectacle and authenticity. Grounded action sequences can elevate a movie's overall feel of authenticity and make it more enjoyable for audiences. Movies like Black Hawk Down, Drive, and The Hurt Locker demonstrate how realistic action sequences can contribute to critical acclaim and commercial success.

Despite being such a popular genre, action movies often struggle to create realistic stunts and action sequences, making those with plausible – yet still thrilling – action scenes all the more impressive. Many action films become hyper-focused on creating marvelous spectacles, causing them to include ridiculous sequences that test even the most patient audience's suspension of belief. This type of approach was common of many popular action movies from the 1990s, and still persists today with franchises like Fast & Furious. On the other hand, some films manage...

Diggs also is set to voice King Triton with Amber Riley as Ursula in Ariel, the Disney/Disney Junior animated series.

Benicio del Toro Is Officially a Screenwriter With New Project 'Reptile'
Image
An Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and two-time Screen Actors Guild Award-winner, Benicio del Toro (Traffic) has delivered an acting career that has been nothing short of successful. The actor has appeared in a slew of celebrated titles, including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Way of the Gun, Sin City, The French Dispatch, and even dipped into a handful of MCU features. Along with working with some of the biggest filmmakers around, del Toro has also tried his hand at directing and expanded his credits beyond acting and into producing. However, up until his soon-to-be-released project, Reptile, del Toro has never penned a script. That all changed when he was cast in Grant Singer’s thriller as he also joined Singer and Benjamin Brewer to co-write the screenplay. In addition to his newly minted screenplay credit, del Toro leads the upcoming crime thriller opposite Alicia Silverstone and Justin Timberlake.

Dead Man: The Greatest Western You've Probably Never Seen
Image
Many of Hollywood's all-time greatest movies can be categorized as westerns. Take those by John Ford, for example: Stagecoach (1939), The Searchers (1956), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) are all considered among the finest projects to ever grace the silver screen. There's also Sergio Leone with The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1969), and Clint Eastwood with The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) and Unforgiven (1992).

And none of that is to even mention films such as High Noon (1952), Rio Bravo (1959), and The Wild Bunch (1969), or even more contemporary movies like 3:10 to Yuma (2007), True Grit (2010), and Django Unchained (2012). That's a lot of content. And with all of those classics spread throughout several decades, even more westerns have fallen by the wayside.

Written and directed by Jim Jarmusch — one of America's greatest yet most underrated auteurs — Dead Man (1995) is the single greatest western you've never seen.

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie’s “gnarly” R-rated movie is planned for post-Dead Reckoning Part Two
Image
While Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One didn’t quite break the bank as predicted, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie won’t let it slow a good partnership down. The two have collaborated on a number of Cruise’s latest outings, including the last three Mission: Impossible sequels, Top Gun: Maverick and Jack Reacher. McQuarrie gained recognition with his script for The Usual Suspects, which he parlayed into his debut outing as both the writer and director of a violent, crime thriller with a side of dark comedy titled The Way of the Gun back in 2000.

McQuarrie is coming back to his harder-edged roots on a secret project with Cruise that he’s describing as a “gnarly” R-rated film. Back in 2020, McQuarrie hinted to Empire about the project and speaking once again with Empire for his in-depth talk about Dead Reckoning Part One, he confirms the project is still...

Christopher McQuarrie’s First Movie as Director Is Still One of His Best
Image
Long before director and writer Christopher McQuarrie was collaborating with Tom Cruise on Jack Reacher and numerous installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, including the latest titled Mission: Impossible –Dead Reckoning Part One, he made his directorial debut with the underrated crime drama The Way of the Gun. The Oscar-winning screenwriter's 2000 film is a tough-as-nails crime thriller starring Ryan Phillippe and Benicio Del Toro as two criminal drifters Parker and Longbaugh who kidnap a surrogate mother for ransom and find themselves involved in something much more complicated than a simple kidnapping.

‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning’: Tom Cruise Will Entertain the F-ck Out of You or Die Trying
Image
Modern movies can now be slotted into five distinct categories: Comedies, dramas, horror/sci-fi, superhero films and Tom Cruise. The 61-year-old actor has gone beyond being a marquee-name star to becoming his own movie genre, a sort of one-man blockbuster flavor that borrows liberally from those other types and adds in a special sauce that’s equal parts charisma, salesmanship, daredevil action, nonstop running and teeth. As the industry-saving success of last year’s Top Gun: Maverick reminded us, Cruise is still the closest thing to a sure thing, the...

Chekov’s Star Trek: Tos & Picard History Explained
Image
The character of Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) has been part of the fabric of Star Trek since he joined the crew of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2. Apparently, Gene Roddenberry had changed Chekov's character from English to Russian in response to a complaint from a correspondent in the Soviet Union. This explanation, given by Star Trek writer Gene L. Coon in his book The Making of Star Trek, has since been disputed by actor Walter Koenig in the 1995 documentary, William Shatner's Star Trek Memories.

In the film, Walter Koenig rightly pointed out that, at the height of the Cold War, American TV would have been banned in the Ussr, and suggested that Roddenberry made Chekov Russian to honor the Soviet Union's considerable successes during the Space Race. Initially, Chekov was added to the cast of Star Trek: The Original Series to fill in for George Takei,...

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996)
'Mission: Impossible 7 + 8' Delayed Another Year Until 2023 & 2024
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996)
Another delay for these two highly anticipated action movie sequels. Paramount Pictures and Skydance have confirmed an extra year delay for the back-to-back next Mission: Impossible movies. The next two sequels, directed again by filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, were filmed back-to-back and will be released back-to-back. The rumor is that this means the storyline will play out between both movies - with a big cliffhanger ending tying them together. Mission: Impossible 7 was set for release in September of 2022 later this year, but it has been rescheduled for release on July 14th, 2023 next summer. And the sequel, Mission: Impossible 8, has been moved from that July 2023 spot to June 28th, 2024. Nothing to do but wait 'till they're ready. Both movies already finished shooting over the last year. They're now in post-production, which is why the studio has decided more ...

Joseph Baxter Mar 20, 2019

Frankenstein’s Monster is headed to CBS… to solve crimes on a TV procedural called Alive, from the team that brought you Elementary.

CBS has announced a new crime procedural pilot that, theoretically, could replace “Elementary, my dear Watson” with “Fire bad.” – Well, maybe not. However, the pertinent point here is that the Eye Network is developing a Frankenstein-based TV series, which will set the lightning-struck, body-stitched reanimated giant in San Francisco to solve crimes. – We’re not joking!

Now under the title, Alive, he CBS Frankenstein TV pilot – greenlit along with dramas Republic of Sarah and Courthouse – is under the creative direction of Jason Tracey and Rob Doherty, a duo of writers for the network’s long-running, imminently-ending modernized Sherlock Holmes series, Elementary. The ordered CBS Television Studios production will see Tracey pen the pilot and serve as executive producer with Doherty.

‘Mission: Impossible’ Returning With Back-to-Back Films Directed by Chris McQuarrie
Christopher McQuarrie
If you took Christopher McQuarrie’s just-posted tweet “Missions: Accepted” to mean that he’s returning to the action franchise, you were correct. Variety reports that the director of last year’s “Fallout” — which, with $790 million in box-office returns, is the franchise’s highest-grossing entry — is helming back-to-back sequels due in 2021 and 2022, respectively. McQuarrie and Tom Cruise will be spending a lot of time together over the next few years, as they’re also collaborating on the upcoming “Top Gun: Maverick.”

While the first four “Mission: Impossible” movies each boasted a different director — Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird, respectively — McQuarrie has emerged as its main creative force. He wrote and directed “Fallout,” co-wrote and directed “Rogue Nation,” and will handle both duties on the two untitled sequels. His contributions to the series have been as popular with critics as they have with audiences, as “Fallout...

‘Jack Reacher’ Getting Rebooted as a TV Series; Lee Child Says Tom Cruise Was Too Short
The Jack Reacher film franchise is done, apparently. Author Lee Child’s popular series of books were adapted into a movie in 2012 by Mission: Impossible – Fallout filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, who marked his triumphant return to directing 12 years after the Oscar-winning Usual Suspect screenwriter’s directorial debut The Way of the Gun. Despite some Jack Reacher superfans who were angry that Tom Cruise was too short to play the fictional character who doesn't actually exist, the film was a modest hit for Paramount, grossing $218 million worldwide. A sequel was greenlit and hit theaters in 2016, but …...

Christopher McQuarrie Shoots Down ‘Mission: Impossible’ Spin-Offs But Hints At A Future Film With Rebecca Ferguson
Twelve years went by between filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie’s directorial debut with “The Way of the Gun” and his follow-up “Jack Reacher.” However, since 2012, McQuarrie has firmly planted himself as one of the best action directors working today with not one, but two great entries in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise. After a Decade of Tom Cruise Blockbusters, Christopher McQuarrie Wants to Return to the Indies He Abandoned
Christopher McQuarrie
Christopher McQuarrie won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for “The Usual Suspects” 22 years ago, but it wasn’t necessarily smooth sailing on his path to directing “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” which with its near universal praise and enormous box office projections places him clearly amongst the elite action directors working in Hollywood today.”I learned a lot between my first and second film [as a director], especially in that there were 12 years between “The Way of the Gun” and “Jack Reacher,” seven of which I didn’t get anything made,” said McQuarrie in an interview with IndieWire. “I was really struggling and was forced to confront what I was doing wrong: ‘Why couldn’t I get something going? What did the business want from me that I wasn’t giving them?'”

McQuarrie said his career and life turned around when he stopped fighting to make the movies he wanted to make (but no...
