Relentlessly downbeat Southern survival slasher ................

In what seems like a totally gratuitous nude shower scene, the film opens as a "Psycho" clone. This prank by four college coeds, sets in motion a relentlessly downbeat tale involving a psycho Southern sheriff. On their way to Florida, a fateful blowout strands the four students in Medley Georgia, where the sheriff, Tony March, has just strangled his mistress. When he discovers that one of the girls has witnessed the killing, March begins a methodical murder spree, eliminating the girls one by one. A frustratingly dimwitted deputy looks the other way, while the sheriff does his deadly deeds. The film is lively, has decent character development, memorable nudity, and a controversial ending. Good of it's type, and recommended. - MERK

Better than you'd expect

The beginning's not too promising -- a bit of college hi-jinks involving a quartet of over-aged sorority girls -- but then the girls head for spring-break in Florida and things improve. They become entangled in murder in a small Georgia town and while the plot turns are fairly predictable, they are carried out more efficiently than in many other movies boasting "name" casts and big budgets. True, the subplot featuring two young men, (also heading for Florida), goes nowhere, and the ending is abrupt and unsatisfying, but all in all this is one of those items found on the dusty back shelves of a video store which is actually worth watching. Acting honors go to Tony March's bare chest which is shown to splendid advantage in several hot and sweaty close-ups.

Pretty Decent

Good to see that the opinions here about SHALLOW GRAVE are consistent: It's a better movie than it probably had to be. An opening teaser segment with a co-ed being butchered in a shower is a dead end, or rather an attempt to mollify audience members who expect films with such titles to feature such content. Once that's out of the way and the misleading "bimbos off to party on spring break" setup is complete what you are left with is indeed one mean movie.

It's actually more of a hicksploitation thriller than an outright horror film though the central character is indeed a psychopath. He's a small town sheriff who's used to getting his way and has no scruples against planting incriminating evidence, violating people's Constitutional rights, or resorting to outright murder when convenient for his needs. Four young ladies on a road trip happen upon him murdering a local squeeze and find themselves powerless to escape his clutches. The film is mean spirited, unforgiving, knows that the scenario being presented is chillingly possible & has fun playing with our fear of ending up in a similar jam. Check it out.

Intense Backwoods Suspense

Thought it might seem to be a routine slasher film on the surface, Shallow Grave has a lot more than meets the eye and moments are bone-chillingly effective as a crooked cop goes after college girls who witnesses him kill a woman. You might be surprised how involving and intense this one gets.

Oh yeah, I fell asleep the first time I tried watching

And I was fighting it this time. Hmmmmm, where have I seen this opening voyeuristic scene? Cut to, THE SHOWER SCENE FROM PSYCHO! (with admittedly a very fetching full-frontal involved). So, these three Catholic University girls... and their MOM prank another student who dared to try to poach one of their dates. The ladies escape their nun's wrath, and promptly head out on a road trip to Ft. Lauderdale. Cue the bargain-basement soundtrack!

They meet two "hunks" at a roadside BBQ, make plans to meet the next day, and one of them steals an ID as insurance. Next day, precisely in Medley, Georgia, they blow a tire in their K-car, and the dingy-est broad had gotten rid of the spare to make room for more luggage. So another goes into the woods to pee (sorry, learning their names was asking too much of me for a "5"), and witnesses a man kill his mistress. Turns out he's exactly the wrong guy in town to witness murdering someone. The rest of the film is this kind of downward spiral into crooked, corrupt sheriffs and their slow-witted deputies. Yup, they even round up an armed redneck posse to hunt and kill the girls.

Frankly, I didn't find this thrilling, exciting, intriguing, or particularly horrific (though I did like the "doomed" scenario). Actually, a few things to like about this rather bland manhunt. Like I said, this storyline does not seem to go the ladies' way, and when you've got law enforcement (NATURALLY) against you, well, let's say if you're a fan of downbeat endings, you'll appreciate this. There's a subplot of the two guys trying to find out what happened to their supposed meeting, and they are entertainingly SOL on multiple occasions. I dunno, great shower scene, and a De Palma rip.

I think if they made it to Ft. Lauderdale, then the murderous shenanigans began... and not to be "sexist" (for shame!), but maybe this wouldn't have been such a sausage fest. Like, how many times do I need to see the sheriff's hairy, sweaty chest? Ok, now I'm really reaching. I was bored for the bulk of this.

Sort of Scary

Going in with no expectations, I was taken by surprise by how well made and suspenseful this movie turned out to be. The stakes are high, the characters are mostly interesting and/or relatable, and you're never sure where the story will go next. Makes me not want to take any road trips through the south.

Don't give up on this one after its lousy start...it gets much better!

Four young women go on a road trip. They meet two guys at a restaurant and after a bit of flirting, invite them to travel with them. I found the set-up unrealistic, the acting bad, and the dialogue rather silly. I also found the girls so annoying that I didn't think I would ever root for them.

During the first few minutes of 'Shallow Grave', I thought "oh boy, I've stumbled upon a really bad 80's horror movie". Another few minutes later I thought "hey, this is getting interesting", and into the second act I was hooked! Starting off as a badly acted, poorly scripted B-movie, this film surprisingly got better and better as it developed!

The story became more interesting and suspenseful, the acting got better as the girls found themselves running for their lives, and I became fascinated by the events. I thought Tony March did a great job as antagonist Sheriff Dean (oh, and that manly body!!). Towards the end the suspense is so well crafted, I was on the edge of my seat. I don't want to do spoilers on this one, so I'm not going into specifics. From the synopsis you already know the girls are witness to a murder, and now the killer is after them. Yes, this is a familiar premise, but 'Shallow Grave' is very unpredictable.

I prematurely thought 'Shallow Grave' was going to be a forgettable slasher movie. Now, this will be a memorable one. And the film ends on a fantastic cliffhanger ending! Wow, this was actually darn good!

Avoid Medley

The much better titled, Greetings From Medley Georgia, is only one of a few best things about this amateur affair. Apart from the amusing deputy, the Psycho reenactment revenge hoax, a guilty pleasured sex scene, and a goofy mechanic, another best thing is a repeated honkytonk soundtrack about a favorably spotted sixteen year old girl. 4 unruly young girls set out to Fort Lauderdale, when a tyre burst horribly derails their trip. One of them, happening about a murder, committed by the town's sort of John Leslie looking sheriff, post sex, takes off. Not so lucky are one of two other friends, who chance upon him later. This is a situation plot carrying movie, with many, so happen miss moments, as you'll see, but it's just so amateur, especially the stupid acting, with a nasty sudden open ending I really liked. The other best thing. The girls are not that likeable either, and about every character doesn't have much upstairs. Violence wise too, occasional, in very short supply.

A compelling down south thriller!!

A dirty sheriff, decent kills, and a headshot! This above average thriller gem is totally worth your time. The abuse of power in this movie is more relevant than ever! Truly a film that will give you angst and anxiety!

Unpredicatable, Dowbeat Suspense

Four friends head off to spring break in Florida, but get a flat tire in the middle of Medley, Georgia where one of them witnesses the local sheriff murder a woman. Now, they're on the run and who will take their word for it over the sheriff.

Shallow Grave rarely takes the traditional way out and you're never sure where it's headed. From the first scene of the movie that calls to mind both Psycho and the corny opening movie-within-a-movie moment from Blow Out, the filmmakers are playing with our expectations in a way that would make Hitchcock proud. It takes a traditional slasher film set up of party-loving teens breaking down in the middle of nowhere and makes it frighteningly realistic and plausible.

Shallow Grave doesn't have a franchise-ready iconic killer, but it's all the more frightening for it. It also has a main foursome of likable young women who don't go out of their way to grate our nerves or make unrealistic choices to drive the plot forward.

Engaging and Compelling Thriller

A car load of gal pals take a trip to Florida for spring break and accidentally witness a murder along the way which sends them running for their lives.

Obviously shot for little money and featuring a no-name cast, it's surprising how much this film can get under your skin. While you might not recognize many of the actors, they mostly all do a credible job selling the situations they've found themselves in. There's just the right amount of sleaze and gore, but it's more about the suspense which is well orchestrated and the story goes to some interesting and unpredictable places.

"Hidden gem" from the mid-80s in the thriller/horror category

Four females from a Catholic college in Virginia head to Fort Lauderdale for Spring Break, but inadvertently see something they shouldn't have seen in a Southern town along the way. Havoc ensues.

"Shallow Grave" (1987) begins with an homage to "Psycho," but it's more of an adventure/crime thriller than a slasher. Movies from the early 80s like "First Blood," "Trapped," aka "Baker County, USA," and "Murder in Coweta County" come to mind. It starts fun and amusing, keeping with the college girls traveling to Spring Break motif, yet takes a deadly serious turn in the second act, becoming suspenseful till the uncertain climax.

Brunette Donna Baltron stands out on the feminine front as Rose; too bad her role isn't bigger. On the other side of the gender spectrum, Tony March is notable as the hairy-chested Sheriff.

There's an interesting subtext on the domino effect of negative decisions, which can lead to desperation and committing the most awful acts imaginable. Even the best of us is susceptible, so don't make the initial bad decision in the first place (in this case, adultery). Other themes include injustice, the corruption of an authority figure and the responsibility of those in subordinate positions.

It runs 1 hour, 29 minutes, and was shot in Medley, Florida, which is 15 miles northwest of Miami and 30 miles southwest of Fort Lauderdale.
