Robin Williams’ Most Terrifying Role Finds a New Streaming Home 22 Years Later
Image
Robin Williams’ most unsettling performance is back in the spotlight — One Hour Photo(2002), the psychological thriller that flipped the beloved actor’s image on its head, is soon coming to Hulu starting August 1, 2025. The news comes after Hulu released its August 2025 slate, which consists of dozens of documentaries, movies, and TV shows arriving on the streamer in the coming month. The move marks the film’s first major U.S. streaming resurgence in years, arriving 22 years after its original theatrical release.

One Hour Photo is helmed by Mark Romanek and stars the late Williams as Sy Parrish, a photo technician whose fixation on a suburban family evolves into quiet obsession. Unlike his warm, kinetic performances in Mrs. Doubtfire or Good Will Hunting, Williams in One Hour Photo is cold, meticulous, and eerily still. He strips away all charm to play Sy Parrish as a man drained of affect, creating a...

25 Years Later, Sandra Bullock’s Underwhelming $62 Million Drama Labeled “A Little Preachy” Gets a Delightful Streaming Update
Image
Since 1987, Sandra Bullockhas been a major player in Hollywood, starring in successful productions beginning with the 1993 sci-fi action pic Demolition Man, after debuting with a minor role in 1987's Hangmen. At 23, her supporting role in the former earned her early attention, after which she found her breakthrough in Speed and ultimately took on more lead roles. Even with her outstanding portfolio, Bullock has had a few failures in her acting career, one of which is the Betty Thomas-directed film, 28 Days, which was brought to life twenty-five years ago.

With 28 Days released in April 2000, this year marks its silver jubilee, which of course has to be celebrated in style. Hulu has just the right idea as the streamer has announced the comedy drama as part of its August 1 lineup. In addition to Bullock, the film starred Viggo Mortensen, Dominic West, Elizabeth Perkins, Azura Skye, Steve Buscemi, and Diane Ladd.

Ahead of ‘Practical Magic 2,’ Its 26% Rotten Tomatoes Prequel Will Enchant Its Way to Another Streaming Home
Image
Months after Practical Magic debuted on HBO Max, where it instantly became a favorite among subscribers, the 1998 fantasy pic has found another streaming home. Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sisters Sally and Gilly Owens, it was released on October 16, 1998, and later landed on HBO Max on October 1, 2024, where it climbed to the #5 spot the following day. Even so, the film was not much of a success either critically or commercially, considering its worldwide earnings of $68.3 million against a $75 million budget and its rotten 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite flopping, the romantic drama has already received the sequel treatment, scheduled to premiere on September 18, 2026. As fans gear up for its arrival, Hulu plans to add the original to its platform starting August 1. The magical film will join numerous other classics also debuting on the same day, including 10 Things I Hate About You and another Bullock-starrer, 28 Days.

5 Best Movies Shot On An iPhone
Image
If one knows about the evolution of film camera technology, it can be fun to visually trace changing cinematic aesthetics. There was a time, very early in cinema history, when film cameras were so enormous and fragile that they couldn't be moved too freely. Filmmakers were forced to shoot nothing but wide, locked-down shots. Also, cameras could only hold so much physical film, forcing each take to be carefully choreographed in order to save the previous celluloid resource. Eventually, cameras became a little more limber, and engineers found ways to mount them on dollies, cranes, etc., allowing filmmakers to create more dynamic, fluid motions. Cameras continued to get smaller. Camera operators could pick them up and walk around with them. When the Steadicam was invented, a camera could now be safely mounted onto the camera operator's body, allowing for the most dynamic range of motion yet.

Then, when film was replaced by digital,...

What’s Coming to Hulu and Disney+ in August
Image
As the TV world kicks into high gear with Emmys season, streaming platforms are still hard at work to bring the latest in film and television right into your homes. August’s offerings on Hulu and Disney+ include a handful of new movies, family-friendly programming, a lot of “Ice Age” and “John Wick,” and the return of Chris Hemsworth’s quest for immortality. Disney+ has livestreams planned for outdoor adventures and World Princess Week, as well as the animated anthology “Eyes of Wakanda,” set in the “Black Panther” universe; while Hulu will premiere a new season of “King of the Hill” and a two-episode limited series about the wrongfully convicted Amanda Knox.

Top Pick: “FX’s Alien: Earth”

In Noah Hawley’s latest installment to the “Alien” universe, it’s the year 2120 and our planet is ruled by corporations (yikes!). Five giants run the world: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and...

’28 Years Later’ Doubles the Box Office Total of M. Night Shyamalan’s Failed 51% Rotten Tomatoes Franchise-Starter
Image
Back in 2010, just before his career imploded because of the critical and commercial failure of The Last Airbender, director M. Night Shyamalanwas signed by Universal to creatively oversee and produce a trilogy of standalone horror movies. The series would be called The Night Chronicles. Think of it as the proto-Dark Universe, also orchestrated by Universal. The Night Chronicles was quietly canceled after just one release, the modestly successful chamber piece Devil. The movie grossed over $60 million worldwide against a reported budget of $10 million, and would've likely made even more had it been released now. But now is the time to shine for 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle's long-awaited zombie thriller, which has now grossed around twice as much as Devil.

Having played in theaters for almost a month, 28 Years Later has generated nearly $130 million globally. The movie opened to positive reviews — it holds a strong 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes...

’28 Years Later’ Review #2
Image
Stars: Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams, Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes | Written by Alex Garland | Directed by Danny Boyle

23 years after the release of 28 Days Later, we finally have the long-awaited 28 Years Later. The third film sees 28 Days writer Alex Garland teaming up with the film’s director Danny Boyle. The two have had a great creative relationship over the years, with Boyle directing three of Garland’s first four screenplays. However, it’s been 18 years since the two last worked together on 2007’s Sunshine. Now they’re back together to return to the world of the rage virus, a virus that has only affected the UK, and as a result, the entire island has been quarantined, abandoned, and isolated. Over time, it has caused the island to fester, grow, and mutate, just like the zombie craze Boyle and Garland reignited 23 years ago.

The Original Version Of 28 Years Later Was A Completely Different Movie – And In A Different Language
Image
23 years after they revolutionized the horror genre by modifying the undead for regular, fast moving people infected with a rage virus in "28 Days Later," Danny Boyle and Alex Garland returned to the zombie universe they created with "28 Years Later" — a movie Stephen King liked but wasn't scared by.

The two filmmakers have changed a lot in the two decades since their (not a) zombie movie, which makes "28 Years Later" a fascinating exercise in not trying to do the same thing again. As /Film's own Chris Evangelista described it in his review, the film is "a kind of sensory overload — the blend of violence, mixed-media, and a frequently jarring soundtrack swirl together with feverish effect." Indeed, as per his review, "28 Years Later" manages to be both scary and touching, an impressive, effective, and memorable horror sequel.

In "28 Years Later," we meet Spike (Alfie Williams) and his...

’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Will Release in 28 Weeks; Here’s Everything We Know
Image
How Hollywood typically works is that sequels aren’t ordered until movies prove themselves to be box office hits, but the story with 28 Years Later is a bit different. The long-awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later was conceived as a trilogy from the outset, with both Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later and its own sequel uniquely filmed back-to-back.

Yes, that means 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has already wrapped production with director Nia DaCosta (Candyman) at the helm, and Sony has already given the film a release date. The Bone Temple will release 28 weeks from now on January 16, 2026.

Whether or not we get the third film in the planned trilogy, well, that’s seemingly dependent on the box office performance of these first two movies. But that’s a story for another day…

Today we’d like to focus...

28 Years Later Director Says This Terrifying Scene Was Not in the Original Cut of the Film
Image
An early scene in 28 Years Later was both ominous and surreal, thanks to the haunting piece of art teased in the film's marketing. Director Danny Boyle explained how that "Boots" poem reading set the tone of the entire film.

Boyle was floored when he first heard that haunting voice resonating throughout the 28 Years Later trailer. They had three versions to choose from for the initial marketing, but the one with the eerie chant was immediately compelling. "We had all these archives that we wanted to use to suggest the culture that the island was teaching its children," he told Variety. "It was very much a regressive thing — they were looking back to a time when England was great."

"And then we watched the first trailer that Sony sent us — [writer] Alex [Garland] and I remember it vividly — and there was this [recording] on it, and we were like, 'F---ing hell!'...

28 Years Later Takes In $60M Worldwide; Elio Earns Pixar's Worst Debut Ever With Just $20M Domestic
Image
Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's 28 Years Later is now in theaters, and the long-awaited sequel is off to a pretty good start at the global box office. According to the latest updates, the movie took in $30 million domestically and $30 million overseas, for a $60 million worldwide debut.

Not a bad result for an R-rated horror film with a reported production budget of $75 million, but it will be interesting to see how the movie continues to perform in the coming weeks. Reviews were excellent, but general audiences haven't really embraced 28 Years Later as wholeheartedly, and word of mouth may be key to continued box office success.

Universal/DreamWorks’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake held on to the No. 1 spot with a $37 million second weekend, but it's far less positive news for another family-friendly adventure which hit theaters this weekend.

Disney/Pixar’s Elio took in just $21 million...

’28 Years Later’ Explained: The True Meaning Behind That Wild Ending
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers for 28 Years Later's Ending

Like any other great zombie media, Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later isn’t strictly about the infected, but explores themes beyond survival and what it means to stay sane in a world without order. The heavily anticipated sequel to the revered 28 Days franchise, which follows a new set of characters, delves deeper into this sentiment amidst its wild ending.

The ending, which takes a stark departure from the surreal tone with the introduction of a new faction, encapsulates the thematic argument of the movie that people will continue to cling to meaning in a world that doesn’t make sense.

28 Years Later‘s ending sums up the thematic core of the movie

Set to be the first entry in the modern 28 Days franchise, the ending for 28 Years Later sees Spike, played by Alfie Williams, leaving his island settlement in...

Box Office: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Rules Again as ‘Elio’ Heads for Lowest Opening in Pixar History
Image
Ouch.

Universal’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon will have no trouble staying No. 1 in its second weekend with an estimated $35.7 million despite the entry of zombie sequel 28 Years Later and the animated Elio — which is headed for the lowest opening in the history of Pixar amid a crowded marketplace for family fare.

Danny Boyle’s zombie sequel, from Sony, topped Friday’s chart with $14 million, including $5.8 million in Thursday previews, but will be overtaken by How to Train Your Dragon, from the Universal-owned DreamWorks Animation, sometime on Saturday.

A few weeks ago, 28 Years Later was tracking to open to $35 million, with more bullish pundits thinking it could come in north of $40 million. Instead, it’s headed for a solid $30 million to $31 million domestic start. Similar to the family space, some are speculating that the horror marketplace may over-saturated, led by box office hit Final Destination: Bloodlines.

‘What Happens if Our Culture Dies?’ Danny Boyle on ’28 Years Later’
Image
“I mean, this is our culture?” Danny Boyle asks, rhetorically. “Right?”

Or maybe he’s not being rhetorical — the British director has a tendency to pose as many questions as he does provide answers during an interview, and seems genuinely interested in having a conversation rather than simply being the “A” half of a Q&a. It’s a Sunday, and Boyle is in New York for a little less than 24 hours. He’s here for a very early screening of 28 Years Later…, the long-awaited third entry in what’s...

Netflix Has Removed the Christopher Nolan Gem That Almost Had Robert Downey Jr.
Image
Netflix is home to a wide range of brilliant films, having something to offer for all kinds of viewers. In its wide roster of films available for streaming in the United States, the streaming giant has unfortunately removed one iconic Christopher Nolan gem that almost starred Robert Downey Jr.

If you haven’t realized it yet, we are talking about Batman Begins (2005), the gritty reboot of the Caped Crusader by Nolan. Marking his first superhero venture following films like Memento (2000) and Insomnia (2002), the film redefined superhero cinema, kicking off one of the best Batman movie series of all time. While everything about the film was perfect, including the cast, the film almost starred Downey in a significant role.

The Forgotten Beef Between ‘28 Days Later’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead’
Image
This weekend we’re getting a belated sequel to 28 Days Later, the 2002 horror hit that, in retrospect, looks like it was shot with the same camcorder used to document your uncle’s wedding.

It’s no surprise that 28 Years Later exists, considering that so many people love the original film. But two decades ago, Danny Boyle’s acclaimed horror-thriller, pseudo-zombie movie took some shit from the young British whippersnappers who made Shaun of the Dead.

In fact, the ending of Shaun of the Dead specifically mocks 28 Days Later. As you may recall, the humanoid creatures of Boyle’s film were the victims of a contagion known as the “Rage Virus” — presumably because the “Tweaked Out Zombie Sprinter Virus” would have been a little too on the nose. In the final moments of Edgar Wright’s zombie comedy, a TV news anchor states that all reports that “Z-day...

28 Years Later – Review
Image
Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) in Columbia Pictures’ 28 Years Later. Courtesy of Columbia Pictures

28 Days Later was a terrifying horror hit about an viral infection that ripped through Britain, rapidly killing its victims and turning them into angry zombies that spread the infection. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland followed that up with 28 Weeks Later, with the Rage virus morphing and spreading to Europe. Now Boyle and Garland are back for a third round, but this time set farther into the future, with 28 Years Later.

Set much farther in the future from 28 Weeks Later, 28 Years Later is not a true sequel that continues the story line of 28 Weeks Later, but a new full-on post-apocalyptic story set in the same world. After a prologue that loosely ties this new film to the previous one, in which a boy evades to zombies who kill his parents, the film updates us on the situation 28 years later.

’28 Days Later’ Recap: What to Remember Before ’28 Years Later’
Image
“28 Years Later” is finally here and a refresher on the first two films might be in order.

It has been 18 years since the last film in the franchise and 23 years since it all began in “28 Days Later.” The latest film proves that things are hardly better off despite all the time that has passed. The years have not been kind to the world, and survivors are still doing their best to fight against a plague of Rage Virus-fueled monsters.

Before you dive into the latest film, refresh yourself on the most important bits from “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later” so you’re square on all the most important lore bits.

The Rage Virus Began in Monkeys

The virus that burned through the UK and then the world began in chimpanzees. The animals were experimented on by scientists while searching for a way to trigger enhanced aggression and anger in victims.

“The Phones Became Weapons”: Anthony Dod Mantle on Animating 28 Years Later with Danny Boyle
Image
Anthony Dod Mantle has done more to advance digital photography than nearly any artist in any medium, a fact his humility rendered somewhat subtle during a career-spanning conversation I had the fortune of conducting in 2023. He could, nevertheless, casually mention that 28 Days Later constitutes “a historic film” without anyone batting an eye. The sheer aggression of Danny Boyle’s zombie picture only amplifies over two decades of digital images that have largely strived to be clean and, well, film-like. The memory of television ads with those harsh, muddy textures airing across America still boggles the mind.

Around this time did Mantle tell me about plans for a 28 Years Later trilogy on which he would shoot part one and, if all went well, three. Personal anticipation for it’s been more than I’d typically afford a zombie legacy sequel, and rumors of iPhone-shot footage piqued interest. I understood...

28 Days Later (2002) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
Whether it was the shocking imagery of a barren London in 2002, when the thought of totally empty cities felt unrealistic, or the brash, loud violence of it all: you likely remember where you were the first time you experienced 28 Days Later. It’s a film that feels utterly unique from the opening frame. A genuinely special movie that changed the genre and did so while battling the adversity of city councils, angry commuters, and even the fallout of 9/11. All leading to a genre-defining horror classic whose third upcoming sequel became the second most-watched YouTube trailer in movie history more than twenty years later. Hard to imagine for a movie that completely ran out of money before it even had an ending. This is what happened to 28 Days Later.

While we all know the story of 28 Days Later starts with careless activists who just wanted to set some damn monkeys free,...

'It's Sort of Died Out Now:' 28 Days Later Director Reveals the Title's Meaning
Image
28 Days Later seemed a straightforward title for a film about an outbreak, but then that magic number keeps appearing in the sequels. Danny Boyle and Alex Garland dispel the mystery with a Millennial reference.

It's easy to assume that 28 Days Later alludes to the movie's events, the immediate aftermath of the Rage Virus outbreak. It turns out fans of the franchise are way off base. "The title was based on… it used to be when you returned goods, [28 days] was what you always had," director Boyle explained via Cinemablend. "[Back] then it was like, you have 28 days in which to return this good, to get your money back, or stuff like that. It was a common usage [sort] of thing. It's sort of died out now, but that's where we got it from."

Writer Alex Garland confirmed this in an interview with Jake's Takes. He acknowledged the number 28's significance in...

’28 Years Later’ Review: Still Infectiously Good
Image
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Alfie Williams in Columbia Pictures’ ’28 Years Later’

How long is a long time to wait for a sequel? Recently, we’ve waited 36 years for a Beetlejuice sequel, 36 years for a Top Gun sequel, 35 years for a Blade Runner sequel, and 30 years for a Mad Max sequel. This makes the 18 years since 28 Weeks Later seem like an afternoon nap, but considering they missed out on 28 Months Later, fans have been salivating. Well, the wait is over, and 28 Years Later is here.

After the events of 28 Days Later…, the entire British Isles were quarantined to keep the Rage virus off of mainland Europe. The survivors of the virus were left on the Isles to fend for themselves.

It is in this world that 28 Years Later takes place.

A small island off the coast of England has managed to keep the Rage virus away due to its only being accessible...

28 Years Later Review: A stunning (but not perfect) return for the franchise
Image
Plot: Twenty-eight years after the Rage virus escaped from a medical research laboratory, the United Kingdom has been decimated and completely removed from civilization. Yet, small pockets of humanity have learned to adapt and live among the infected. When a young survivor, Spike (Alfie Williams), journeys to the mainland for the first time, he believes he may have discovered a way to save his mother, who’s been stricken with a mysterious illness. This leads him to leave the safety of his village in a Hail Mary attempt to get her some help.

Review: I recently rewatched 28 Days Later, and it’s not a stretch to say that—even more than George A. Romero’s classic Dead trilogy—it directly led to the amazing resurgence in zombie content we’ve seen over the last two decades. Without 28 Days Later, there’s no way AMC would have greenlit The Walking Dead,...

Box Office Preview: Will ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Eat ’28 Years Later’ and Pixar’s ‘Elio’ for Lunch?
Image
Things could could get mighty interesting — and messy — at the June 20-22 box office as Pixar’s original animated movie Elio and Sony’s zombie pic 28 Years Later go up against holdover How to Train Your Dragon, which has quickly turned into an all-audience hit for DreamWorks Animation and parent company Universal.

Forecasts are all over the place, but one scenario shows the live-action Dragon staying atop the domestic box office chart with $40 million or more after opening to nearly $200 million globally last weekend. The film, fueled by stellar audience scores, is appealing to both families and hordes of Gen Zers who grew up on the animated franchise.

From Sony, Boyle’s zombie sequel 28 Years Later has all the ingredients of turning into a box office win, considering its relatively modest net production budget of $60 million before marketing. Sony is suggesting an opening in the $28 million range, while tracking...

Sony Pictures has quietly launched a special WikiLeaks style website revealing secret documents and images in promotion of the upcoming 28 Years Later movie. This zombie movie horror sequel is yet again directed by Danny Boyle, and written by Alex Garland, following up the original 28 Days Later horror classic from 2002. This viral website is called RageLeaks.net and currently contains 10 downloadable documents featuring audio, photos + messages including leaked emails & more. Obviously it's hinting that the rage virus isn't really contained... It's likely the plot of 28 Years Later will be some zombies returning and the virus spreading beyond the UK. The viral site also shows a map indicating that Ireland is infected in addition to the UK, but it's supposed to be contained in this (despite...

Stanley Kubrick in Arancia meccanica (1971)
Chase’n’Dick.

We wrapped up May discussing Stanley Kubrick’s controversial adaptation of The Shining (listen) and worshipping Frank Henenlotter’s Frankenhooker (listen) before kicking off June with a canoe trip with John Boorman’s Deliverance (listen).

Now it’s time for our annual Joel Schumacher episode and, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his neon-infused take on the Caped Crusader, we’re turning our attention to 1995’s Batman Forever.

The superhero film finds Val Kilmer taking over the reins of Bruce Wayne/Batman from departing actor Michael Keaton. As Bruce struggles with repressed memories that deliver him to Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman), Batman must confront a pair of new villains who threaten Gotham City: former prosecutor turned crime boss, Two Face (Tommy Lee Jones), and former Wayne Enterprises employee turned Riddler, Edward Nygma (Jim Carrey).

Thankfully help(?) arrives in the form of Gotham’s newest orphan, Richard...

28 Years Later writer Alex Garland is ‘sort of done with directing’
Alex Garland never thought about directing the 28 Years Later trilogy. The 55-year-old scribe reunited with his 28 Days Later co-writer and director Danny Boyle, 68, for the upcoming horror flick and its two sequels, though has now revealed he never considered helming 28 Years Later himself as he decided he was “sort of done with directing”.Speaking with ComicBook.com about whether he wanted to direct 28 Years Later, Garland said: “No. I was certainly, at that point, sort of done with directing and wanted to write for other people.“[That] was one thing, but also, even if Danny hadn’t wanted to do it … I think if Danny hadn’t wanted to direct it, that probably would have just ended it at that point. And I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to step in and, take that role.”Garland - who made his directing debut with 2014’s Ex Machina and has recently...

July Will Be a Sad Month for ‘Overlord’ Fans
Image
In typical Netflix fashion, the streaming giant is already gearing up for the removal of several favorites, including some high-profile movies, series, and a couple of Netflix Originals, ahead of next month. Among these works of art is the beloved isekai anime series, Overlord, as confirmed by What’s on Netflix. All four seasons of Overlord depart Netflix on July 1, about three weeks away, which may not be enough time for fans to revisit the 52-episode series.

While this may be saddening, several other options are available to stream Overlord. Crunchyroll currently streams all four seasons but may not be as easily accessible as Netflix. Hulu offers Overlord, too, but unfortunately, only Season 1 is available on the streamer. Meanwhile, for physical media collectors, retailers list each collection for around $30-40, depending on the format.

Overlord is based on Kugane Maruyama’s eponymous light novel series and was produced by Madhouse...

George R.R. Martin Responds to Director Choice for A24's Elden Ring Movie
Image
Author George R. R. Martin has shared his thoughts on A24's choice of director for the upcoming Elden Ring film adaptation. Game of Thrones creator Martin provided the world-building for the original video game, and he's not mincing words about the movie.

In a blog post on his official website, Martin talked about A24's choice of director for the project. "A24 is a kickass studio, and Alex Garland is a first rate director," Martin wrote, sharing a fan YouTube video titled "Why the Elden Ring Movie Won't Suck." The Elden Ring film was officially announced in May 2025, with Martin on board to help produce it. Casting announcements and a release date have not been shared at this time.

In addition to directing, Garland is also set to pen the script for the Elden Ring movie. He's both directed and written for numerous successful films and video games. His...

Danny Boyle Teases ’28 Years Later’: The Return of Cillian Murphy, the Evolution of the Infected, and Two More Sequels
Image
Danny Boyle is having a little bit of trouble with all of this. Mostly, he wants to tell us everything about his upcoming “28 Years Later,” the much-anticipated third film in his gory, juicy, and beloved zombie series, but a few things keep him from spilling his guts. Mostly, that this writer and interviewer has only seen a sliver of the film in question, as the full film was not available to press on the occasion of our interview.

But even with those 28 minutes, there’s plenty to chew on. The third film in the series, following Boyle’s 2002 smash hit “28 Days Later” and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2007 sequel “28 Weeks Later,” stars Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, and was written by Alex Garland (who also wrote the first film). And, yes, it picks up 28 years after the outbreak of the Rage virus, which destroyed the modern UK,...

'28 Years Later': Director Danny Boyle Previews Stunning Footage From the Horror Sequel
Image
Director Danny Boyle returns to the rage virus apocalypse in 28 Years Later. Sony Pictures invited a select group of New York City journalists to meet the Oscar-winner and preview footage from the upcoming film. The premise has Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) taking his 12-year-old son Spike (Alfie Williams) away from their island refuge in the Scottish Highlands. At the event, we were allowed the exciting opportunity to see the horror sequel's intro and a significant chunk of the first act. He then discussed how the pandemic influenced the narrative for 28 Years Later, by changing public behavior on how to react to a crisis, and how that continued in the aftermath:

"The 28 is again important. One of the things that was interesting was that it was 28 years. We thought about the way that Covid first hit us all. We kind of panicked into the behavior we were told to do: wear blue...

28 Years Later BTS Photo Reveals How iPhones Changed the Movie Sequel
Image
A behind-the-scenes look at 28 Years Later is showing how a complex setup of iPhones was used to film the horror movie sequel. The different visual approach is meant to make the zombie terror even more distinct.

IGN talked to director Danny Boyle about utilizing modern technology to give the third 28 Days Later film a unique visual style, similar to its predecessors. The concept of shooting the film on iPhones stemmed from the idea that mobile phones are the modern-day equivalent of 2002's camcorder. "I suppose you could ignore it, but we decided to carry it as an influence," Boyle said.

28 Years Later utilized iPhones for certain sequences -- sometimes employing as many as 20 at a time. Other techniques to create the film's eerie visuals included attaching cameras directly to the actors, using special sensors, designing rigs for multiple cameras and working with other types of cameras and lenses. When...

‘28 Days Later’ Fans Can Finally Get the Zombie Classic on Blu-ray Ahead of '28 Years Later,' But There's a Catch
Image
28 Days Later has been deemed an ever-elusive cult classic for over two decades. One of the best and most iconic zombie features in cinema history has been sadly hard to find on digital and any physical media due to rights issues, prompting genre fans to resort to illegal options by either buying secondhand DVDs or digging around online. Fortunately, 28 Days Later is finally getting the long-overdue physical release treatment it certainly deserves, as Sony is set to release a 4K Uhd SteelBook edition of the acclaimed Danny Boyle-directed post-apocalyptic film. This coincides with the theatrical release of its highly-anticipated sequel, 28 Years Later, on June 20, 2025.

The trailer for 28 Years Later surely had fans on the edge of their seats, so much so that it garnered millions of views upon its release. However, with the third installment looming on the horizon, revisiting the original that started it all was — legally speaking — almost impossible.

The Last of Us TV Show Is 'Better Than 28 Days [Later]' Says Writer Alex Garland
Image
Alex Garland is a fan of The Last of Us. The filmmaker recently revealed that he believes the HBO drama series to be better than his 2002 post-apocalyptic zombie movie 28 Days Later.

Garland shared his opinion during a discussion with The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann for Sony's Creator to Creator series. "Let me say this: The Last of Us is better than 28 Days [Later]," Garland said (via GamesRadar+). "The Last of Us is better than 28 Days, or at least the writing is. I'm not going to talk about directing, that would be a silly thing. So not that. I know what 28 Days is, I know what I did. I know what that process was. The thing about The Last of Us, I was like, 'Oh, this is so much more sophisticated and moving. It was moving. I'm not dissing 28 Days, I'm very proud of it. It's a nice part of my life.

Alex Garland Claims 'The Last of Us' Is Better Than '28 Days Later'
Image
It's almost a given for horror fans to compare their favorite movies/shows. But, no one expected Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later, to compare his own movie to HBO's hit The Last of Us series. Not only did Garland pit the two franchises against each other, he actually thinks the video game adaptation is better. Both IPs are gearing up for their next releases, with 28 Years Later releasing on Jun. 20, and The Last of Us Season 2 premiering on HBO on Apr. 13.

During an interview with The Last of Us video game's creator Neil Druckmann for Sony, Garland discussed the similarities and comparisons between both zombie franchises. 28 Days Later is one of the most lauded zombie movies of all time, but Garland admitted that The Last of Us is that much better than his own movie. "Let me say this: The Last of Us is better than 28 Days [Later]," he revealed.

Stephen King Thinks This 87% Fresh Horror Masterpiece Failed to Do Its Job (& He's Wrong)
Image
28 Days Later didn’t just rewrite the rules of horror – it shattered them. Danny Boyle’s 2002 masterpiece redefined the zombie genre with fast zombies, empty streets, and pure dread. Its chilling vision of a post-apocalyptic world earned critical acclaim, an 87% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and its rightful place in horror history.

However, Stephen King wasn’t sold. The horror legend claimed the film failed to do its job of scaring him, dismissing it as more intriguing than terrifying. But fear isn’t always about jump scares or immediate frights. 28 Days Later taps into something deeper—primal survival instincts, the horror of isolation and the collapse of humanity—making it one of the most hauntingly terrifying films of its kind.

Why Stephen King Dislikes 28 Days Later

For Stephen King, a horror movie’s job is simple: to scare you senseless. And, in his opinion,...

28 Days Later's 4 Different Endings Explained (And Which One Is Canon For 28 Years Later)
Image
28 Days Later is arguably one of the best zombie movies of all time, but it could have had a total of four different endings. While the film does not involve the dead coming back to life, 28 Days Later is generally considered a zombie movie, as it has many tropes found in the zombie apocalypse genre. Still, while many zombie movies have a large cast, one of the strengths of 28 Days Later is its minimal cast and character-driven plot. The story centers on Selena, Hannah, and Jim, who woke up from a coma to find the world destroyed.

28 Days Later's Ebola-inspired "rage virus" is the agent of the apocalypse. It is a lab-created illness that turns regular human beings into furious, animalistic creatures. That said, the movie's most disturbing moments come from the fact that the human survivors can often be more brutal than the infected people,...

’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ Sets MLK Weekend 2026 Launch
Image
Sony has already set a release date for the second film in their newly revamped 28 Days trilogy — 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple — which will hit theaters on Jan. 16, 2026.

By the way, Sony just dated on top of New Line’s highly anticipated Zach Cregger directed genre movie Weapons. There was some buzz in the ether that Warners was going to move Weapons to 2025 after it test well, but the studio is very content with the MLK weekend launch and has not plans to move. Don’t know what happens now that Sony has started a game of chicken (bawk! bawk!). Also currently on the MLK weekend 2026 schedule is an untitled Disney film.

So as not provide confusion: the trailer which just dropped was for 28 Years Later and that Danny Boyle directed zombie is coming out on June 20, 2025. The trailer for 28 Years Later was the second most watched...

'28 Days Later' Gets Official Streaming Date From Sony
Image
After years of being unavailable to stream, 28 Days Later is making its long-awaited digital debut. 28 Days Later was released in 2002 and became a cultural phenomenon, revamping the zombie genre for the 21st century. Despite the film's popularity, the movie has largely been unavailable to stream on any major platform, purchase on PVOD, or buy as a physical release, seemingly due to rights issues. With 28 Years Later, the long-awaited third entry on the horizon, Sony Pictures is gearing up the marketing for the horror sequel by re-releasing the original movie digitally.

Deadline revealed that Sony Pictures will release 28 Days Later on digital platforms for rental and purchase on Dec. 18, 2024. This news follows the release of the trailer for 28 Years Later, which Deadline reports is the most-watched horror trailer of 2024 with 60.2 million global views in its first 24 hours, as well as the second-biggest horror trailer of all time behind It Chapter Two,...

Why You Can't Watch 28 Days Later Anywhere
Image
The 2002 Danny Boyle and Alex Garland film 28 Days Later undeniably changed the zombie horror genre forever, yet it's still surprisingly hard to find. This post-apocalyptic zombie flick featured Cillian Murphy’s breakout role and was the first to successfully re-imagine the classic George A. Romero slow-walkers, creating unconventional and terrifyingly fast zombies. The film further redefined tropes with the use of a final boy rather than a final girl, as well as the Rage virus outbreak source killing and reanimating the living into the Infected, as opposed to only taking effect on the dead.

28 Days Later received the 2003 “Best Horror Film” Saturn Award along with an array of other accolades, as well as an impressive worldwide box office gross of $82,719,885. It's since reached iconic status, and the film boasts an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. With this amount of critical acclaim, it's worth wondering why it's so hard to watch.

’28 Years Later’ Trailer: Is Cillian Murphy a Zombie?
Image
Oscar winner Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) starred in the original 28 Days Later, executive produces the much-anticipated sequel, and is quite possibly a zombie in 28 Years Later. The buzz on social media is that Murphy appears in the trailer, rising from a cornfield at the 1:48 minute point.

While Murphy’s role remains unconfirmed, the trailer does show what the world’s like 10,228 days after the apocalypse.

“Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected,” reads Sony Pictures’ synopsis. “One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway.

That Creepy Poem In The 28 Years Later Trailer Has A Disturbing Real-Life History
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The world got a rude awakening this morning by way of the brand new trailer for "28 Years Later," which somehow makes the Teletubbies even scarier than they already were. That's what you get when director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reunite for a sequel to their pandemic movie nightmare "28 Days Later," which they created together over two decades ago. The pair are joined here by an incredible lineup of onscreen talent too, including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Feinnes.

While the footage features plenty of folks on the run and trying to avoid getting nibbled or nicked by Rage infected locals (as you would expect), the most jarring thing about the "28 Years Later" trailer is the unsettling audio accompanying it. Rather than using the now iconic "28 Days Later" score by John Murphy to ramp up the stress levels,...
