Female protagonists dominate "Mercy". I think that is one of the key factors that make it so entertaining. It makes no apologies its depiction of its women being independent and living their own, albeit secret, lives. One learns gradually of this subculture as the erotic Vicki Kittrie reluctantly guides Detective Catherie Palmer through this dark, ethereal world in search of a killer. This is really a film worth enjoying. The acting is superb from one and all. The plot moves along with constant suspense, and the climax is gritty and real, yet stunning in its poignance. And that aura of the sensually erotic simply pervades every scene. I highly recommend "Mercy".
A little too much actually but it makes for a decent thriller although it becomes a little too predictable during the middle.
You have to be fairly open minded and in the mood but this will keep your attention. Particularly good performances by Julian Sands, whom I normally dislike, and Pita Wilson.
If you decide to see the video, do it for the sake of this dazzling duo. The film's worth seeing though just for the two of them.
And yet, I couldn't stop watching it. Ellen Barkin remains a highly underrated actress (and an unbelievably sexy woman for her age.) Peta Wilson has hypnotic beauty and holds her own quite well with Barkin. She actually "researched" the role by delving into LA's lesbian S&M scene for a few weeks ... what a trooper.
If you have Memento-esque short-term memory lapse, this is a great film. Forget the plot and float along in its lurid eroticism.
All in all a good movie, that I will view again in the near future.

- QuizDamian Harris asked Ellen Barkin' to portray her character three different ways: 1) Palmer knew she was attracted to Vickie, 2) Palmer wasn't attracted to Vickie, and 3) Palmer wasn't sure if she was attracted to Vickie. Harris would then edit the takes together, giving the audience an unsure vibe of what Detective Palmer thought of Vickie.
- BlooperCatherine allows Vickie, a murder suspect, into her house and even succumbs to her sexual advances.

Mechanic: So, you're a cop?
Det. Catherine Palmer: Yeah. You like that?
Mechanic: Yeah. What do you work, vice?
Det. Catherine Palmer: Homicide.
Mechanic: That's a little weird, isn't it? I mean, you being a woman and all?
Det. Catherine Palmer: [pause] What do you do?
Mechanic: Mechanic. I fix things.
Det. Catherine Palmer: Say you got an old lady, she comes into the shop. She's driving a '72 Chevy, she's hearing a little ticking noise. Turns out she's got a busted transmission, gonna cost her 2,000 bucks. Only thing is, she doesn't have any money. What are you gonna do?
Mechanic: I'd say 'I don't fucking care.'
Det. Catherine Palmer: You're looking at someone's mother, pal. And all you see is an old lady with a busted-up car and not enough cash. All I ever see... people's dead mothers. Just a name on a file... guy in a dumpster, girl in a landfill, little dead boy in a park. Can you fix that?

- A fantasy shot of Palmer punching the chestnut haired woman in the bar, and then explaining to Vicki that it's the woman who her husband cheated on, as well as more dialoge where Detective Palmer explains to Vicki about her marriage and her husband.
