The champions of the two irreconcilable moral positions have the authenticity of their real historical prototypes. Naum Shopov as the Tsar has achieved a particularly fine characterization. His interpretation of the character is free of the abstract acting clichés, which are typically used in such roles. On the contrary, the Tsar is shown as a contradictory, intensely dramatic personality impersonating a historical absurdity.
