Ott platforms may be full of espionage dramas, but Apple TV+’s Slow Horses is leading the lot, by far. With season 5 of the show in tow, this series is quietly climbing the streaming charts, owing to its richly drawn characters, razor-sharp performances, and clever writing.
It is based on the acclaimed Slough House novels by Mick Herron and takes viewers on a journey through the back end of MI5, where struggling agents find chaos, redemption, and purpose. The consistent good reviews from critics, dynamic production style, and being able to adapt the source material so well are what make Slow Horses not just a sleeper success, but one that aims at long-term dominance in the spy thriller genre.

Slow Horses on Apple TV+ is better than any spy-drama series Netflix has offered in a long time, and you can’t change my mind! When I first started watching this hidden gem of a slow-burn thriller, I was gripped by its pacing, intelligent writing, and screenplay that’s larger than life, yet still easy to consume.
Gary Oldman’s brilliance shines through the pretence of being a lazy MI5 reject, and Jack Lowden is so good too. With its near-perfect critics’ ratings and multiple awards spanning across 4 seasons, the show delivers a binge-worthy watch that keeps viewers coming back for more, in a way very few Netflix shows have been able to do lately. With Slow Horses season 5 and we can’t wait to dive right in!

Over 4 seasons, Apple TV+’s Slow Horses has gradually created a reputation for itself as a complex thriller. With season 5 set to premiere on Sept. 24, 2025, and the show already being renewed for seasons 6 and 7, fans can rest easy. This horse is galloping without any hurdles. Except for one issue. Will Smith, the executive producer and Emmy-winning writer who has been a part of the show since the beginning, is officially handing over the reins after this season.
Based on Mick Herron’s beloved Slough House novels, the Apple TV+ drama has been praised for its dark humor, razor-sharp writing, and award-winning performances. It currently holds a 98% critic and 88% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Will Smith’s departure marks the end of an era. It also raises questions on how the show will function henceforth without his creative vision.

There’s a moment in Apple TV+’s “Government Cheese” where David Oyelowo’s character is swallowed by a catfish. “That’s something I didn’t have on my dance card, and something I’m sure not a lot of actors can say that they’ve done,” Oyelowo tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. Tthe phrase that keeps coming up from people is it’s unlike anything they’ve seen. That, in and of itself, is a huge source of pride for me.”
But in the surrealist comedy, anything is possible. “That is definitely part of the joy of both doing it, and I hope watching it, is that you’re getting to see scenarios you haven’t really seen before,” Oyelowo says. That includes “seeing a Black family under these circumstances that you haven’t seen them in before, but in a familiar time.”

One of the coolest and most beloved sub-genres for thriller, action, and drama fans is the spy genre, and there’s a good reason. In a spy film or series, we get complicated and cool characters who put their lives on the line by going against numerous people, and instead of always letting their guns talk, they use more covert tactics, which are always thrilling to watch. So, Prime Video being what it is, it has a large library of content, and also some of the best spy shows you can find, and that’s what inspired us to compile a list of the best spy shows you can watch on Prime Video right now.

The Apple TV+ series Slow Horses is a thrilling British spy series that follows MI5 agents in their investigations. However, Slow Horses' twist of placing the agents in the MI5 version of a banishment room, Slough House, has differentiated it from the typical spy thriller. Slow Horses features a stellar cast, and each of the characters brings their own faults and eccentricities to the show, making it feel even more real and gripping. It is no wonder that fans are looking forward to Slow Horses season 5, but, in the meantime, Netflix has just released the perfect follow-up series.

The penultimate episode of Slow Horses Season 4 ends with River in MI5’s custody—specifically Emma Flyte’s (Ruth Bradley)—only for mercenary Patrice (Tom Wozniczka), who works for Frank Harkness (Hugo Weaving), to attack, leaving agents dead, Emma down, and take River (Jack Lowden) with him. How will MI5, specifically First Desk Claude Whelan, react? TV Insider talked to James Callis about that, his character’s dynamic with Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), who’s clearly much more comfortable in charge, and more. The fifth episode ends with River being taken at the end of the episode. What can you preview about how Claude deals with that in the finale? James Callis: Claude always believes that he is doing the right thing, and one might say thus the world is destroyed by people with good intentions. And to be fair,...

The stakes have skyrocketed on Slow Horses Season 4 Episode 4, and with only two episodes left, the big question on my mind is: who will make it out alive?
Harkness and his Terminator-like hitman are deadly, and it feels like no one is safe.
Even Jackson, the king of cool, seemed a little shaken by what he saw. He knows this is serious business — maybe the most dangerous game he’s ever played.
(AppleTV+)
Whatever secrets are hidden at Les Arbres will tear Slough House and the Park apart — with or without Whelan and Flyte’s interference.
Taverner won’t be able to keep Whelan in check for long, and Flyte is a wildcard, hungry to prove herself. As for River? Well, River is just River, and I love him for it.

Slow Horses season 4 star Gary Oldman explains why Jackson Lamb is such an effective spy. Based on the novels by Mick Herron, the hit Apple TV+ espionage thriller series follows the agents working in Slough House, an MI5 dumping ground for screw-ups and those who have made powerful enemies inside the British government. Slow Horses season 4, episode 1 brought the show back earlier this month, following Oldman's Lamb, Jack Lowden's River Cartwright, and the rest of Slough House as they track a dangerous figure connected to a devastating London bombing.

Spoilers are ahead for Slow Horses season 4, episode 1, "Identity Theft."Although Slow Horses season 4 adapts the fourth Slough House novel, Spook Street, it makes a few key changes to the story, including bringing Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) back into the fold. At the end of Slow Horses season 3, River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) manages to get his hands on the "Footprint" file, which contains some incriminating information about MI5. While his grandfather, David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce), believes River should destroy the file and protect MI5's reputation, he decides to leak it. Admittedly, Slow Horses' MI5 isn't always accurate, but this results in a slew of changes for the agency.

Slow Horses season 4 on Apple TV+ has viewers wondering if Slough House is a real MI5 branch. The British spy thriller is based on the bestselling Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron. Like the source material, the series centers on Slough House the administrative purgatory for MI5 agents who've made career-ending missteps. Although these "slow horses" are relegated to drudgery, they get involved in high-profile cases, thanks in large part to the rude-yet-incisive veteran MI5 agent Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who leads Slough House's team of well-meaning misfits.
Although the ensemble is led by Lamb, Slow Horses' other key characters include River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), an MI5 agent who lands in Slough House during season 1 after making a very public mistake, and Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas), the Deputy Director General of MI5 and head of operations who's been gunning for MI5's designated "First Desk" since the show's start.

No one expected this. When audiences are first introduced to Jackson Lamb, played by acclaimed actor Gary Oldman, on the Apple TV+ television series Slow Horses, the camera slowly glides over debris littered across the man's desk, only to find the man waking himself up with a surprise burst of flatulence while sleeping on his office couch.
It's an unceremonious introduction, to say the least, and yet Jackson Lamb has now become one of the most rewarding roles in Gary Oldman's celebrated career. In other ways, that introduction is entirely fitting. Jackson Lamb isn't your typical spy hero; instead, he's an unlikely protagonist who is more than willing to berate, belittle, and offend anyone around him, especially his co-workers. Slow Horses season 4 introduces new characters and fresh storylines while resolving longstanding arcs. River's struggle to fit in with MI5 has shaped his character over three seasons a conflict that needs resolution. Slow Horses must move River's story forward in season 4 for authentic character growth and show longevity.
Slow Horses season 4 is set to introduce an array of new characters and storylines to the show's ever-expanding narrative, but one longstanding arc needs to be resolved after simmering for three series. Although every season of Slow Horses revolves around a standalone story, several elements carry over. While in many cases this helps give the show a clear sense of continuity, there's also a risk that revisiting the same arcs without any progression could leave the show feeling stale.

After 2022 saw Slow Horses drop not only two complete seasons, but enough protagonist bodies to pack out a Ford Cortina, the third outing successfully lulled us into a false sense of security. Save for a kidnapping, some light torture, and a near-miss with a double-decker bus, Season 3 left our heroes largely undented. Strap in for round four, however, as showrunner Will Smith (Veep) and author Mick Herron are back on sadistic form from the get-go, not only blowing up a shopping centre in the opening scene, but placing all our heroes in the kind of mortal peril that regularly ends with a truncated cast list.
The set-up not only sees the MI5 off-cuts at Slough House trying to unravel the ongoing bomb threat, but also brings tragedy closer to home. River Cartwright’s (Jack Lowden) grandfather, former spymaster David (Jonathan Pryce), is showing early signs of dementia.

Apple TV+’s spy show Slow Horses has quietly become one of the best shows on streaming. Despite widespread acclaim, only in its third season did it pick up recognition at the Emmys, but don’t expect that to stop anytime soon. Season 4 of Slow Horses is firmly the best of the show yet, boasting the most exciting and complex story we’ve seen so far.
Slow Horses Season 4 Review
Based on the fourth book in Mick Herron’s Slough House series, Spook Street, season 4 of Slow Horses follows the eponymous band of Mi-5 rejects as they investigate a terror plot and a conspiracy that might involve River Cartwright’s grandfather. This is the twistiest season of the show yet, upping the ante in ways that will keep you on the edge of your seat and tuning in week after week.

Tom Brooke joins Slow Horses season 4 as a new core team member. His character, J.K. Coe, may bring conflict and a fresh dynamic to the team. Brooke's addition could prevent the show from becoming stale with familiar faces.
Warning: Contains potential Spoilers for Slow Horses season 4 and Mick Herron's book series
The main team in Apple TV+'s Slow Horses is set to receive a shakeup in season 4, with behind-the-scenes- photos seemingly confirming the arrival of a new team member. The Slough House team has undergone some radical changes in the three previous Slow Horses seasons. The difference between season 1 and season 3, for example, is stark, with several characters either leaving the team, dying, or mysteriously vanishing. However, while a lineup change shouldn't seem that surprising, more recent Slow Horses storylines make new arrivals more unusual.

Killing Eve uses unconventional motifs such as female leads, diverging from standard spy series. Season 4 ended with Villanelle's assassination, but fans are still holding out for a potential 5th season. While a Season 5 isn't necessarily impossible, there could be other ways to continue the story.
Killing Eve uses a plethora of exciting motifs to create an entirely new spy series. By placing a tribe of women at the forefront of the narrative, the show is able to push away from the standard conventions built by characters such as James Bond and Ethan Hunt and offer fans something more inclusive. Throughout the show, Eve and Villanelle continue to cross paths, each time accumulating a deeper sense of tension and desire. As such, fans are often left on the edge of their seats, wondering whether the pair will fall in love or lead to each other's demise.

Kristin Scott Thomas shines in Slow Horses as MI5 Deputy Director, proving her spy role potential. Slow Horses redeems Thomas' lost Mission: Impossible character, showcasing her spy skills. Thomas deserved a bigger role in Mission: Impossible, but Slow Horses is finally giving her the appreciation she deserves.
Since 2022, Kristin Scott Thomas has played the Deputy Director General of MI5, Diana Taverner, in Slow Horses, proving that her brief time on Mission: Impossible should have been expanded much further. Long before Slow Horses, Thomas made a name for herself during the 1980s and 1990s in projects such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, The English Patient, Bitter Moon, and The Horse Whisperer. She has earned notable awards during her career, such as a BAFTA and an Olivier award. Slow Horses is Thomas' most recent television project, and Slow Horses season 4 is set to release in 2024.

Gary Oldman shines as Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses, showcasing his talent in the spy-thriller genre. Slow Horses offers a darkly comic look at MI5's inner workings, building momentum as a top spy show. Oldman's role in Slow Horses lays the groundwork for a potential return to his iconic George Smiley character from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
With Apple TV+'s Slow Horses, Gary Oldman has firmly established himself as one of the best actors in the spy-thriller sub-genre – finally paying off what many fans feel is his best hero role. As the acerbic and flatulent Jackson Lamb, Oldman is the beating heart of Slow Horses. Yet while he is an undoubtedly unorthodox spy, there are some surprising connections between Oldman's role in the hit series and an earlier part that helped pave his way.
Over 18 episodes, Slow Horses has slowly built momentum as one of the best spy shows on the small screen.

Spoilers are ahead for Slow Horses season 3.
Donovan's character change in Slow Horses season 3 differs greatly from the Slough House novels, altering his motives and relationships. This change has major implications for Catherine Standish, as her dynamic with Donovan in the show is drastically different from the source material. Slow Horses season 4 and beyond will need to carefully navigate the ramifications of these character alterations to maintain the integrity of the story.
Slow Horses on Apple TV+ is a pretty faithful adaptation of the Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron, but one season 3 character change has huge implications for the show's future. Ahead of season 4's premiere, Slow Horses was renewed for a fifth outing, which means the series will need to plan ahead when it comes to its characters' stories. Season 3 of Slow Horses broke the trend by not killing off any core members of the Slough House team, but season 4 promises to bring back character deaths. The surprise deaths of characters in previous seasons kept audiences guessing and added a genuine threat to the show. The possible death of a main character in season 4 would have a significant impact, considering the growth and development of the Slough House contingent.
Slow Horses season 3 was a major step forward for the Apple TV+ series, yet at least one of the season's big changes will be reversed in season 4. One of the reasons for Slow Horses' success is its twisted take on the spy genre. Following a bunch of misfit protagonists, the show is the antithesis of slick alternatives like James Bond or Mission: Impossible. Yet its impact in its early seasons was also down to narrative bravery, especially where the titular "Slow Horses" themselves were concerned.

Spoilers are ahead for Slow Horses season 3.
Slow Horses season 4 will introduce a new character, Claude Whelan, who will have a significant impact on the story. Whelan's potential promotion to First Desk instead of Taverner in season 4 will only deepen the internal strife within MI5.
Based on the Slough House novels by Mick Herron, Apple TV+'s Slow Horses deviates from its source material at times. In theory, Slow Horses should not work as an ongoing series, whether in the books by Mick Herron or the Apple TV+ show that returns for its third season today. The stories involve a group of disgraced British spies, consigned to a dingy office where they’re not meant to do any important work, but who keep stumbling into major cases, and acquit themselves well doing so. Once seems like a fine idea for a story. But two? Three? Or, in the case of the books, eight? At a certain point,...

Exclusive: The first call Stephen Garrett made after acquiring the rights to suspense-fuelled book Culprits: The Heist Was Just the Beginning was to writer and director J Blakeson, who he hailed as “the real deal.”
Blakeson “has seen every crime movie and thriller. You can’t catch him out really,” Garrett pronounced sagely. He was ideal, then, to write and direct the TV adaptation of the multi-layered, heart-stopping anthology, edited by Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips.
The result is Culprits, an eight-part thriller starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in a career-changing role, and Gemma Arterton, about the maelstrom that swirls after a gang of ruthless thieves pull off an ingenious heist.
Disney+ streams Culprits in the UK and Ireland on November 8 and in the U.S. on December 8 on Hulu. Garrett is executive producer, as are showrunner, writer and director Blakeson, and Johanna Devereaux. It’s produced by Morenike Williams.

War of the Worlds season 3 ended on a strong note, paying off its themes and offering hope in a bleak future. The season introduced new sci-fi concepts and added more science to the science fiction, resulting in a culmination of heady themes. The finale explored the inevitability of fate and the acceptance of death, as characters made selfless sacrifices and faced the consequences.

So confidently has Macfadyen brought his character to life through...
