Late Last Night

Late Last Night is an insane movie. I rented it looking for a fresh movie that I hadn't seen before.. the cover looked played out, but light; unlike some of the more dramatic movies I'd seen lately.

I needed a change.. and a change I got.

When Dan comes out of the door at the start.. his face, and his breathing.. really intense.. I could just feel his mix of anger, pain and shock. I started waiting for something to happen.. anything.. finally, he walks off, kicks over his lawn decor and walks off, while some happy music plays -- the music was so off-colour that I could tell I was in for a strange ride..

Strange indeed.. as soon as he gets out of his lawn, a small kid nearly runs him over on a three-wheeler.. Dan seems to pause as he thinks about the kid.... about how he had maybe thought of having his own with the girl who is now leaving him... There are a lot of these "What-If" flashbacks throughout the movie that you start to catch on to.

After several walk-ins with self-important police and such, he lands himself at a bar.. meets some drunks who just aren't matching his mindset, and driving him mad with their drunken antics, causing him to ditch the bar to call a friend.. someone. He eventually reaches Jeff.. .apparently a very last resort, as he has tried to call his parents before this Jeff person.

Jeff is wild, Jeff is crazy... Smokes pot, pops pills, drinks like a madman, pays whores with coke and "borrows" cars. He's the black of Dan's white.

Dan is close to getting laid several times in the movie but mostly falls short.. on his own, or because of insane circumstances. I found the movie ironic, hilarious, aggravating, inspiring, sad, happy.. anything but dull and boring. There's this huge theme of 70s music throughout the show that I didn't quite understand.. but it was very coloured.

One unforgettable moment is when Dan, still high and on other drugs and alcohol, is in the back of a cop car.. after the cops joke around about beating him senseless, they tell Dan they're kidding and he both laughs and screams in angst -- isn't that indicative of life sometimes?

I highly (HIGHly) recommend watching it.. once while wasted,once while clean. It will open your eyes and massage your senses.

I have to say that when i first saw the movie on a run down video store i really wasent going to rent it, the cover in particular is a obvious ripp off to swingers, boy am i glad i took a chance.

Steven Webber is incredeble in this movie playing the "best friend" of Emilio Estevez who plays the straight man to such a witty character. Like the other posters, we might never know if Jeff (Webber) is real. Who knows? and Who cares?!

This movie is filled with a perfect balance of comedy and realism. A great preformance and a great script. A must buy for sure.

This is a deeply insightful film that many people are probably not going to "get" fully, as evidenced by the other reviews here!

I almost didn't choose to watch this film, because I wasn't in the mood for another wild romp about decadence and the fun of partying. However, it doesn't merely follow the main character on a crazy night of adventures, but it shows how fate guides us down the proper path through those around us if we'll just listen. It's also a kick-ass love story.

The drugs issue in the movie is well done too, showing the good and bad sides of drug use and abuse. Some drug use can open up doors towards enlightenment (though the government doesn't want you to find that out) while an addiction to cocaine can become a life-wrecking nightmare.

The script is beautifully written, and even the most bizarre characters in the film are rendered with compassion and wit, each giving insight into another aspect of humankind. This film is definitely too literary and bizarre to be embraced by the American mass market, but I loved it.

This movie was a big surprise -- straight to TV, misleading previews -- I didn't expect much. But it is a sly wickedly humorous tale of Dan (Emilio Estevez) who thinks his marriage is falling apart, contacts an old friend (Bobby Edner) and goes on the town for an increasingly disastrous night out, involving stolen cars, fast girls who turn out to be strippers, various dangerous drugs, and eventually arrest. On the way there are some eyepopping scenes involving sinister people in off-limit night clubs, and an over-the-top choreographed lip-synch to Queen's "Somebody to Love". Dan is lead on in all this by the Stranger Danger Kid, who is every mother's worst nightmare. After his arrest Dan is interviewed by a psychiatrist (Diane Lane) in a hilariously off-the-wall performance, mixing sympathy for the victim with an icy payoff. We are left wondering if perhaps the dangerous friend is real or an alter-ego leading Dan out of his straight life down the path he secretly wishes his life had taken. A game of golf in the dark with the dangerous friend, using a stolen Cadillac as a buggy, leads Dan to the realization that his life is good and that he wants to make a go of it with his wife.

Altogether a clever and witty film with many interesting surprises along the way. The ending is a little soft, but anything else would have been just too edgy.

I bought this movie because I am slightly obsessed with Wings, one of the best sitcoms ever, starring Steven Weber. This movie, out of all of his others, is the best. This is just a dark and gritty, very well directed movie, set in Hollywoood, about typical latenight fun between two guys looking for trouble...set in one of my favorite settings for a movie, California! I'm from NJ. There is just something special about the doings of "normal" non-famous people in Hollywood. The grittiness seems almost surreal next to all the glamor we imagine. I often daydream about being a bartender in a dive Hollywood bar...for the rest of my life...call me crazy. GREAT MOVIE!!!
