Gundam Wing

I have just recently purchased collection one of this awesome series and even after just watching three episodes, I still am mesmerized by sleek styling of the animation and the slow, yet thoughtful actions of the story-telling. I am still a fan.....with some minor pains.

Though this installment into the Gundam saga is very cool and has what the previous series had-a stylish satiric way of telling about the wrongs of war and not letting go of the need to have control or power over everything(sound familiar?), I have to say that this one gets a bit too mellow-dramatic on continuing to explain the lives of the main characters and their incessant need to belly-ache about every thing that happens and what they need to do to stop the OZ group from succeeding in their plans(especially the character called Wufei...I mean he whines more than an American character on a soap opera. Get a counselor,will ya?)

Besides for the over-exaggerated drama(I think that mostly comes from the dubbing of the English voice actors), this series is still very exciting and will still captivate me once again. I mean it can always be worse. It could be like the recent installment, SEED......eeeewwww, talk about mellow-dramatic....I'll chat about that one later.

This was one of the first anime's I ever saw...I remember staying up late to watch it unedited on Cartoon Network.

The story follows Heero Yuy, a young asassin trained to pilot a Gundam Mobile Suit. Him and his team of other Gundam pilots, Duo, Trowa, Quatre, and Chang, against the corrupt and oppressive Earth-Sphere alliance.

The Earth Sphere alliance is lead by Treize Kushrenada and the mysterious Zechs Marquise, who wears a mask almost constantly.

However, the story quickly unfolds into much larger implications.

This is a great anime and in my opinion the best in the saga. The anime has extremely well developed characters with several problems and inner demons. The plot is also great. The animation is smart and the dialog witty.



There are really only a things I didn't like about this show, one was that it didn't really tread much new ground since its predecessors.

I give it an 8/10.

I remember watching Gundam Wing on television years ago, but only recently did I watch it with my full attention. I watched all episodes including Endless Waltz, and came to the conclusion it is a worthwhile watch. It takes a few episodes for the story to really pick up, but once it gets going it follows true to the Gundam franchise and leads towards an epic conclusion. I do have some minor complaints that do not diminish my opinion much, such as the occasional repetition of certain scenes, but do not let this throw you off. Gundam Wing is actually the reason as to how I initiated into my love of Gundams, and I am quite glad that it did so. The characters are likable in their own ways, and it is clear that they represent certain ideals, but the Gundam designs is really where it is at. If you enjoy watching mobile suits fight with unique designs, a plot which does not seem all too far-fetched, then this is a good watch for you. I cannot review full marks, but a still good 9/10

Well, those of you lucky enough to live in Japan can badger this Anime all you wish. In Japan, there are many Anime to choose from. We Americans get about 2 choices: Gundam Wing or Dragonball Z (I REFUSE to include Monster Rancher or any of the 'mons into the mix.) It's equal to or beyond Dragonball Z in many places, though I agree the plot is sometimes lost or confused in thoughtful dialouge of War and Peace. I don't mind that; in fact I enjoy the insight I receive from it. I wish I lived in Japan or I had the comic shop that would sell me subtitled anime (I hear Sailor Moon underwent HORRIFIC rewrites-too bad :P) I don't though, and Gundam Wing is a good show upon itself.

Gundam Wing is the first installment of the 20 year old Mobile Suit Gundam franchise to make it to american television. And quite frankly, I think that Cartoon Network could have chosen a better introduction. A the same time, they could have done worse as well.

Gundam Wing tells the story of the five Gundam Pilots, young terrorists sent to Earth from the space colonies to take revenge on the death, ten years earlier, of the leader of the Colonies. In the course of their actions, they discover that their true enemy is the secret society OZ. Over it's 49 episodes, this series takes a convoluted plot, and executes it quite well. >

While the story of Gundam Wing is it's greatest strength, it is also the show's greatest weakness. The simple fact is that anyone who knows Gundam has seen it all before... We saw it in Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) and again in Gundam F91 (1990). In addition, Gundam Wing does something else which is contrary to Gundam. It makes it Superheroic...

When the original Gundam premiered in 1979, it was a landmark series because it was the first show to portray the Mecha as simple fighting machines, like a tank or fighter jet. Prior Mecha shows always showed their machines as characters, mute and unintelligent, but characters nonetheless. Gundam chan ged all that. Unfortunately, by making it's Gundams superheroic Mecha that are invincible, Gundam Wing turns it's back on that.. And ultimately, that's what turns me off of the show...

In other words, It's good, but it's just not Gundam...
