‘Bullet Train Explosion’ Netflix Review: A Tense But Thought-Provoking Legacy Sequel To 1975 Film
Image
Like every other ‘90s kid who was just getting into the action genre, Speed was (and still is) my go-to movie when I was in the mood for some thrills and chills. Nowadays, so many movies have strapped bombs to locomotives ready to be triggered if said locomotives fail to maintain a certain velocity that the concept won’t exactly surprise anybody. But back then, watching Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock maneuver a public bus while trying to figure out ways to thwart the bomber was nerve-wracking and exciting. Later on, when I was in the mood for some ‘80s Bollywood movies, I watched The Burning Train. It was undoubtedly one of the best action movies of the era and continues to give a lot of modern Hindi films a run for their money. With all that said, it was only recently that I learned that both of them were...

‘Shin Godzilla’ Director Shinji Higuchi on Netflix’s ‘Bullet Train Explosion’ and His Love for Cinematic Destruction: It ‘Really Excites Me in a Weird Way’
Image
Japanese filmmaker Shinji Higuchi finds beauty in bullet trains specifically so he can destroy them on screen, a creative paradox that defines his latest film, Netflix’s “Bullet Train Explosion,” and much of his celebrated career.

“The order, the precision that it symbolizes and something that’s stable… That’s something that I’m drawn to, and because I love it so much, I want to destroy it,” Higuchi tells Variety about the Japan-set film at Netflix’s Apac showcase in Tokyo.

The film’s central premise is that bombs are rigged to detonate instantly if the titular train’s speed drops below 100 km/h. The bomber demands JPY100 billion ($660 million) as ransom to disarm the explosive device, triggering a desperate race against time for crew, passengers and railway personnel.

Prior to “Bullet Train Explosion,” Higuchi established himself as a master of tokusatsu filmmaking, with trains frequently appearing in his destructive setpieces.

Hindi cinema's story-driven, socially conscious filmmaker who even got 'police summons'
Image
A unique combination of circumstances led to him landing in Bombay soon after the Partition and being tasked with directing a film, though his cinematic experience was limited to being a film journalist. He even managed to rope in a top actor – and on the very first day, questioned his rendition of a crucial scene.

Recalling the episode decades later, veteran Hindi film director and producer B.R. Chopra revealed that Ashok Kumar, who had somehow agreed to act in the film despite his misgivings at its totally green director, was taken aback.

“He then suggested that he would do the shot again in the way I suggested, and prints of both this and the way he had done, should be made, and he would check them the next day to see which was better,” he told Bollywood personality and chronicler Shashi Ranjan in an interview.

As a nervous Chopra arrived...

Veteran Bollywood actor Ranjeet was a popular face in Hindi cinemas during the 70s and 80s. He mostly appeared in roles with negative shades. Besides working in Bollywood, he has also worked in several Punjabi movies. The actor was often showcased as an alcoholic on-screen owing to his villainous roles, but in reality, the veteran actor never had a drop of alcohol despite hosting several parties at his place. However, he recently revealed how the then-leading actors like Rajesh Khanna, Parveen Babi, and others partied back then.

He was born as Gopal Singh Bedi near Amritsar and has reportedly played villain in over 200 Hindi movies. The late 70s and 80s superstar Parveen Babi is a star whose loss is a remnant in Hindi Cinema. Her charm and ability to translate emotions through subtlety and grace made the movies she starred in more affluent. But did you know she once ran behind Mahesh Bhatt without stopping him after they broke up? She also ended up in a mental hospital in New York.

Parveen Babi‘s life stories are no less than a saga; it had everything: love, heartbreak, sadness, and tragedy. Amar Akbar Anthony, Namak Halal, Shaan, and The Burning Train are just a few of the classic Hindi films she starred in. And while...

Wide-eyed Mumbaikars gape as 'Dreamgirl' Hema Malini enjoys Metro, auto rides (Ld)

“Korean zombie film takes box office by storm, but is it really worth it?” – Subhash K Jha reviews Train To Busan
Train To Busan (Korean with English subtitles)

Starring Gong Yoo, Kim Su-an, Jung Yu-mi

Directed by Yeon Sang-Ho

Rating: ** ½

Zombie films have a chequered history in India. So far there have been very few worth mentioning. There was Krishan D.K & Raj Nidomoru’s Go Goan Gone. And there was another Zombie film with Abhay Deol that Ekta Kapoor and Sid Jain were jointly producing. It got shelved.

I am not surprised. Watching grownup men and women turn into flesh-eating monsters with their heads and limbs tilted at gravity-scoffing angles, is not quite the evening of entertainment that the average Indian middle class family craves for. Unless you are tickled by the sight of scores of zombies prowling the train compartments like rioters during the 1984 riots.

A bunch of assorted characters from different walks of life board a speeding train which gets attacked by zombies. That’s it! The wafer-thin...

Sushmita and Kangna to sizzle on dance floor in No Problem
Anees Bazmee
With government policies clamping down heavily on the participation of foreign entertainers in Bollywood, the days of Kylie Minogue and Snoop Dogg going jiggy-wiggy with Akshay Kumar (in the films Blue and Singh Is Kinng, respectively) are now over. Recent efforts to get international artistes into India have been far from fruitful. The latest example being Shakira who it was being touted as the item girl in Anees Bazmee's No Problem as too the lead in a film based on Hindu goddess. A reliable source exposes the sham behind all these Bollywood announcements about international stars. "99 percent of the time these international stars are not even aware of these lofty plans in India. Filmmakers in Bollywood have access only to international entertainers' agents and managers whose polite non-committal response to the Bollywood invitation is quickly and conveniently construed as approval by Indian filmmakers and announced as such." Anees Bazmee...
