Himalay Ki Godmein

A magnificent movie despite some unrealistic sequences. This has all the ingredients of a good movie but what I liked the most is that it has some social values; i.e. a doctor's prime duty should be to serve humanity & destitute but just not earning money. Manoj Kumar is excellent as doctor. Mala Sinha as Phoolwa is amazing on occasions but most of the times she is loud & over. David and Kanhaiyalal have done well. Others have supported brilliantly. No surprise it was adjudged the Best Movie at Filmfare Awards in 1966 and it also got five other nominations; Best Actress – Mala Sinha, Best Supporting Actress - Shashikala, Best Singer - Lata Mangeshkar, Best Lyricist - Indivar and Best Music - Kalyanji Anandji who have delivered beautiful songs such as; 1) Unche Himalay Ke Neeche 2) Kankariya Maar Ke Jagaya, 3) Ik Tu Jo Mila Sari Duniya, 4) O Tu Raat Khadi Thi Chhat, 5) Ek Tu Na Mila Sari Duniya, 6) Chand Si Mehbooba Ho Meri and 7) Main To Ek Khwab Hun Is. A must watch for all Hindi movie buffs.

Veteran Actor Manoj "Bharat" Kumar Is No More... Vijay Bhatt's "Himalay Ki Godmein" (1965) Made Him A Star Hence I Decided To Watch The Film... It's Genre Is Romance With An Important Social Message & The Director Has Blended Them So Beautifully That By The Conclusion Of Movie, You'll Be Smiling... Kumar, Mala Sinha, David & Jayant Have Delivered Sincere Performances... Also The Locations In The Film Are A Treat To Eyes... Kalyanji-Anandji's Music Is Superb, Especially The Evergreen Song By Mukesh - "Chand Si Mehbooba", Which Is Soul Of This Feel Good Entertainer.

Manoj Kumar plays an idealistic doctor who has to face obstacles in his path like faith in shaman healing over modern medicine, integrity considerations regarding his character to ultimately serve a rural population who are deprived of modern healing.

The plot goes along steady, barely ever slowing down( though I think it might depend a lot on the print of the film on has too, the uncut version might be bigger than the length listed here). Manoj Kumar and Mala Sinha(as a naive village girl) play their roles succinctly, though nothing extraordinary.

The film is full of songs, but with the exception of Mukesh' 'Chand Si Mehbooba', others came across as below average to me.

One of 60s Major Socially Important film on Tribal people's Superstition and Gaucherie about Medical Science. If i have to look at major social classics of 60s (I haven't seen all) then i guess Himalay Ki Godmein should top the list for bringing the social awareness in Heroic (way) and Mainstream Bollywood Cinema. The story of a Doctor who quits his city life to serve tribal people will definitely hit your chords. The Heroic image with social sense, love story, villainous, imposter's expose and clean, straight storytelling of mainstream cinema these all factors have been pulverized perfectly in Himalay Ki Godmein. Manoj Kumar plays a doctor with high social sense and iconic thinking that might have brought some change in all Medical servants thinking. Those Einstein, Fleming and Gandhi's references were used intelligently. Mala Sinha is variable and impressive in each and every mood. Shashikala looks sexy and portrays the city girl accurately. David and Jayant are highly supportive. Music by Kalyanji Anandji is below par. 60s was the Best era of Music and this was not at all on that level. I couldn't connect or hold a single song. Vijay Bhatt's direction is fairly good but mistakes cannot be overlooked. The content of the film recovers those mistakes but just imagine, what level this content would have achieved if those mistakes weren't done. The film doesn't drag much but it looked like a dragged one because of misuse of songs and conflicts according to situations. Dialogues also doesn't offer anything except for couple of brilliant ones at the start by Manoj Kumar. A commercial success of this film was needed for Bollywood and i am happy that such a socially important film and awareness strategy had been watched by major group of audience. Overall, this one is not a Classic but highly important film for it's time because it broke the superstitions and Gaucherie of trible areas.
