Must-see TV for 'Breaking Bad' and 'Saul' fans

An incredibly underrated show that pushed CGI to its absolute furthest reaches, years before James Cameron's Avatar. The characterization is what drives the story and not the other way around. An impeccable attention to details keeps the narrative grounded and consequential. It's these consequences and their impact on the characters that drive the show's drama and its primary throughline as an exploration of the American zeitgeist via Donkey Kong's relationship to the monkey with the boobies. Cranky Kong is good too. I like the bananas and the episode with the haircut. Good music too. Why my pee pee wiggle?

    Meh

I'm a fan of the Donkey Kong games, so I was kind of excited when I saw they'd made this into a show. I'd had great experiences with my other favorite video game heroes, Earthworm Jim and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sadly, I found myself disappointed with the show. It was made for younger audiences, which can always lower a rating with older fans. I accepted the overall plot of K. Rool being after the Crystal Coconut. It was kind of corny, but I could get past that.

Now, as much as I love music, I believe that having a song in pretty much every episode slowed things down. DK's voice actor had a lovely singing voice, yes, but the singing (in my opinion) got in the way of things. They usually had poor lyrics too. The dialogue wasn't the greatest either, but it wasn't horrid.

My major complaint is that I wasn't happy with how some of the characters were dealt with. I didn't mind the addition of Bluster, though I think they went overboard with his character flaws. I didn't mind the absence of certain characters. I simply would have liked to see them come in and do something or other. The only one I really wished would have made it was Wrinkly Kong. Actually, the only two characters I had a problem with were Candy and Dixie. I didn't mind Candy's design change. It might bother most fans of the game, but I took it as an improvement. Her personality lacked severely though. I doubt the Candy from the games was the smartest cookie in the cracker barrel, but at least she was helpful and kind. The Candy in this show is essentially useless, bossy and annoyingly shallow. She was a bit of a control freak too.

Dixie wasn't much better. I could accept the change in design, even if I didn't care for it. Again, it was personality that really got to me. She lost her pizazz. She was much more passive and bland. She had no spunk, and for some reason lost her animals on a continuous basis. (What did she do to those animals, anyway?) Dixie was one of my favorite characters from the game, so it was disheartening to see such an extreme change that wasn't for the better. I'm not sure why they limited themselves. Had they kept her original spunk, they could have had so many more opportunities for show ideas.

King K. Rool and the Kremlings also become fairly blah in the show. They were a bit on the dippy side. I know that was done because they wanted to aim the show at younger audiences, but I still don't care for the changes.

I didn't hate the show. I watched it. I was merely disappointed in it. People who are huge fans of the video games and would throw a fit if any injustice were done to it should steer clear of this show. It strays from the video game a little too much. (I know in some cases they need to stray a little to make it work.) Those unfamiliar with the games or are only "meh" fans might like it, or just not care one way or another.

This show is a real BANANA SLAMMA

This beautiful show conveys emotions beautifully. It has the most beautiful animations at first I thought it was live action. I have never seen a show this good. The songs are beautifully sung, An absolute zero shows how donkey Kong is giving up even though he didn't do anything. I give this show a 10/10 for the characters, animations, emotion, songs, and story.

Singing, Dancing, Slapstick . . . What Else Can Make This Show Worse?

There's two words that for a lot of people never seem to go together well. "TV" and "Video Games". Sometimes they work, but this is not one of those times.

You're favourite characters from the famous series that Rare(which has now, like rumor predicted, left Nintendo, or Nintendo sold it, whatever your view) really boosted. Donkey Kong has come a long way. It started as the villain in what I believe was the first Mario game. In a King-Kong like style, now used in Mario games by Bowser and fellow Koopas, he kidnapped Mario's girl, Princess Peach.

Since then, his son(the missing-from-the-show-and-practically-not-counted-as-a-character-in-the-fra nchise-anymore, Donkey Kong Jr.) has rescued him(but has only been seen in rereleased games since Mario Tennis), he's found a bunch of other monkey pals, including Diddy, and has been jumping, pumping and many other ping words until King K.Rool, the evil croc villain of the Donkey Kong Country series, kidnapped him in Donkey Kong 2.

Well, ignoring some characters, like the Baby Monkey from DK3 and DK64, the series goes back to the days when Donkey Kong, apparently, was a selfish, macho, self-aware guy, Diddy was the party-guy who was forced by instinct to look after him, and Dixie and Candy were only suspecting love interests, making my previous explanations of the whole video game run obsolete. Cranky, the old geiser, now protects a Crystal Coconut with enough power to rule the island they inhabit, the reason King K. Rool is after them, and doesn't give a lick as to how Donkey kong does it, unlike his advising ways in the game.

With stupid time-filler songs that will either repeat themselves again and again in your head or will immediately vanish from your memory, the same back and forth "excitement" over who has the Coconut between the crocs and apes, and maybe a change of setting or a strange thing(the mines and DK becoming a baby comes to mind) supposed to be a so-called "plot", and slapstick comedy aided by the fact they turned Donkey kong into a guy who doesn't care about a thing unless he gets food, like a hairy Shaggy of Scooby-Doo, and Diddy being a monkey that seems high, loves to laugh(and apparently sing) and panicks every 2 minutes make this show pretty pathetic. It can't even get close to capturing the fun of the games.

The audience never sees any of the characters swim in any body of water, but instead they only see certain characters jump into the water off screen with a splash effect.
    • Blooper
Often when Candy Kong raises her head, small dark spots are visible on the underside of her chin, which are actually the same textures as her nostrils that accidentally got copied onto the bottom of her mouth's 3D model.

      Donkey Kong: BANANA SLAMMA!

    • Versioni alternative
The series' Japanese version shortened each episode by a few minutes to make room for TV commercials and the longer Japanese opening credits. Usually one song per episode was removed or shortened, and sometimes further non-essential scenes were also cut. The entire series was also heavily edited to remove any quick flashes or strobe effects, following a controversial Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl (1997) episode that infamously caused epileptic seizures among viewers, leading to a nation-wide uproar. Another difference from the original version was that most episodes would end on a short preview of the following episode. The exception to this is the second-to-last episode, which lacks this preview because the series finale was not part of the original Japanese broadcast. However it was later released as part of the Ohashi quiz show.
