Keanu Reeves’ Chilling Dance with the Devil is Topping Tubi’s Free Streaming Charts
Image
Keanu Reeves fans know him best as an action icon. He’s John Wick, Neo, Johnny Utah. But as horror fans, we can also claim Reeves as one of the genre’s most welcome famous faces. He’s not immersed in it all the time, but whenever Reeves does horror, we pay attention.

Reeves and horror cinema go all the way back to the chilling (if horror-adjacent) River’s Edge in 1986. Since then, he’s appeared in genre staples like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and acclaimed films like Knock Knock. He also, very memorably, starred in a 1990s apocalyptic horror-drama film with Al Pacino that’s streaming for free right now.

In The Devil’s Advocate, Reeves plays Kevin Lomax, an ambitious and unscrupulous defense attorney. Kevin’s the kind of guy who wants to win no matter what, even if it means letting guilty men off the hook. That cutthroat attitude...

When it comes to religious horror movies, filmmakers have long delighted in pushing boundaries, crafting tales steeped in blasphemy and the sacrilegious. They challenge the sanctity of the sacred, turning hallowed ground into a playground for the profane and the demonic. Ministry Kick Off 2024 Tour in San Francisco with Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly: Photos + Video
Image
Ministry kicked off their 2024 North American tour with Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly at the historic Warfield Theater in San Francisco on Tuesday evening (February 27th), just three days before the release of their 16th studio album, Hopiumforthemasses. As it had been a few months since Ministry were on the road, they were definitely refreshed and re-energized, delivering a set of both new and classic songs to a near sold-out venue.

Ministry wasted no time playing the new stuff, as they kicked off their set with five songs from Hopiumforthemasses, beginning with the singles “B.D.E.” (Big Dick Energy) and “Just Stop Oil.” Frontman and ring leader Al Jourgensen was his usual frantic self, belting out the lyrics while engaging with the fans up against the barricade. After a blistering version of “Goddam White Trash,” he and the band were joined by Jello Biafra for “Aryan Embarrassment” (a...

End of Days (1999) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.

Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

Romantic Movie Couples That Were Unlucky in Love
Image
Some love stories are just not meant to be. In many movies, it feels like the entire world is against a couple getting together and finding peace and happiness. These unlucky couples truly have the odds stacked against them, and they remain unlucky with their love unrealized. Other couples do scrape by with a happily ever after, but it's extremely hard-won and not without formidable obstacles.

The road to true love isn't always easy. Two people may come from paths that are diametrically opposed -- like the unlikely romance between a priest who works for the Vatican and an atheist woman in Stigmata. Other times, a couple must move heaven and earth in their fantasy world, defying vengeful meddling princes and near-impossible quests to stay together like in The Princess Bride. Despite their bad luck, some of these couples found lasting happiness, while others couldn't.

Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Ravenous was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

1999, a year of hope, a year of high fashion, nooo, no… 1999, the year when people prepared for Y2K, the year of all the odd choices when it came to fashion, and the year of interesting cinematic options. We got The Mummy which gave us all the hot cast members we could ask for and still gives us memes, we got End of Days, Stigmata, Idle Hands, House on Haunted Hill, The Haunting, Stir of Echoes, and The Blair Witch Project. It was a year for surprising hits, shocking failures, and offbeat horror films. So many smaller budgets did so well. Also out in 1999 was this movie about cannibalism in the olden days of the United States,...

The Prophecy (1995) – Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Prophecy was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Travis Hopson, Edited by Victoria Verduzco, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

When it comes to religious-themed horror, there are a few films out there worth watching and when it comes to the early to mid-1990s, a few films really stand out in the dark, moody horror realm. These genres overlap quite a bit, and one stellar example of dark, moody, religious horror is the 1995 film The Prophecy (watch it Here), starring Christopher Walken as the archangel Gabriel, Elias Koteas, Virginia Madsen, Viggo Mortensen, Eric Stoltz, and Amanda Plummer. The film had a stacked cast for 1995 and it seemed to do decently in horror circles but not so much outside of that. So, what happened to The Prophecy?

What is The Prophecy about?...

The Exorcist: How Each Sequel Compares to The Original
Image
Ever since the emergence of the horror genre in cinema in the 1920s, with titles like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu, audiences have been both fascinated and unsettled by elements such as grisly mysterious murders, creepy Gothic castles, relentless vengeful spirits, and supernatural creatures lurking in dark and foggy woods. Whether they are eerie and dreamlike, laced with a decent dose of realism to maximize terror, or tackling evil cults, these films span many subgenres, and, undoubtedly, the title that explored demonic possession with the best basic formula was none other than The Exorcist, back in 1973.

Based on a story by William Peter Blatty, which itself was inspired by the true events involving a teenage boy named Ronald Hunkeler in Silver Springs, Maryland, The Exorcist was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and directed by William Friedkin, following up on his success with The French Connection.

The plot follows...

Movies With Couples Prevailing Despite Oppositions Surrounding Them
Image
Not every couple is accepted by their peers, elders, and neighbors. Some relationship dynamics are hard to understand from the outside. Sometimes a couple has to face adversity, like a class divide -- or the differences between humans and the supernatural.

Though the two lovers find a unique understanding between each other, people around them at large cannot begin to reconcile their union. Questionable romances don't always inspire adverse reactions in audiences; viewers often find a lot to relate to in an unconventional romance. And with the way production companies work, some romances can only exist as arthouse and indie productions, so they often fly under the radar.

Rupert Wainwright Out as Director of Miles Teller Survival Drama ‘Not Without Hope’ (Exclusive)
Image
Rupert Wainwright will no longer direct “Not Without Hope,” a survival drama with Miles Teller that was scheduled to start shooting in the Dominican Republic this August.

The filmmaker’s exit is being attributed to “creative differences.” The production is now looking for a new director, a search that will likely push back filming by at least a few weeks. Wainwright’s previous credits include “Stigmata,” “The Fog” and “Blank Check.”

“Not Without Hope” tells the story of Nick Schuyler, who managed to survive hours in the freezing water after his boat capsized in the Gulf of Mexico. Schuyler was on a fishing trip with three friends, two of whom were Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper and free-agent NFL defensive lineman Corey Smith. Their brutal ordeal became a major news story. The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Schuyler and Jere Longman. E. Nicholas Mariani wrote the screenplay.

The Two Popes Review: Netflix Delivers a Religious Experience [Austin Film Festival 2019]
Something magical can happen when an excellent, proven, seasoned performer is given compelling material to work with. Sometimes, we're lucky enough to see two such performers given that very opportunity in the same movie, which is then built around them and is engineered to ride or die on the strengths of those performances. Such is the case with Netflix's The Two Popes, which stars Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce as the actors at its center. Both Hopkins and Pryce are at the very top of their respective games in the latest from director Fernando Meirelles (City of God), propelling this fascinating real-life religious dramedy into the awards season conversation.

The Two Popes centers on Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce), who is frustrated with the direction of the Catholic Church and, in 2012, requests permission to retire from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, caught in the middle of scandal and self-doubt, Pope Benedict,...

The project in particular is a personal one for Uzielli whose father was in the Manhattan restaurant business during the 1980s and a close associate of late restauranter Elaine Kaufman. Uzielli had many meals and celebrations at Elaine’s; its focus being an Italian menu. If you were a plebeian, it was a challenge to get a table at the venue. After Kaufman...

‘Stray’ Delivers Low-Key Supernatural Thrills That Are Worth Sticking Around For [Review]
A low-key supernatural thriller in the vein of “The Prophecy” and “Stigmata,” “Stray” makes good use of the insider/outsider narrative trope in its unfolding of a unique, engaging tale. Combining far-east mysticism with a standard police procedural, director Joe Sill deftly keeps his characters and their development front-and-center, with the central conflict of the story used as a means to that end rather than the other way around.

Marilyn Manson Releases Official Cover of ‘The Lost Boys’ Track “Cry Little Sister”
Marilyn Manson
As I wrote before, I would do just about anything for Marilyn Manson to release a full-length covers album. Recently his rendition of Ministry’s “Stigmata” appeared on the Atomic Blonde soundtrack, but that was just a reminder that he’s a master at interpretation. Over the years, Manson has released dozens of covers that have appeared on various OSTs and/or were shared online. […]...

Marilyn Manson
Listen to Marilyn Manson Cover Lost Boys Song Cry Little Sister
Marilyn Manson
Fans of Marilyn Manson know he has a penchant for creating daring cover songs that push the envelope in new ways, and the artist has just done it again. While touring in support of his new record "Heaven Upside Down," Marilyn Manson added yet another cover song to his repertoire, which horror movie fans will certainly enjoy. A recording of a concert from earlier this month revealed that Marilyn Manson covered Gerard McMahon's "Cry Little Sister," the theme song from the 1987 horror classic The Lost Boys.

Marilyn Manson unveiled this new cover song on his tour stop earlier this month at The Van Buren venue in Phoenix, Arizona. This song does not appear on the "Heaven Upside Down" album, his 10th studio album, and if you're a fan of the original track, you can tell that the artist is quite faithful, while putting his own unique spin on it.

Inside World Cup 2018's Makeover: How Director Rupert Wainwright Is Fixing Russia's Image Problem
Rupert Wainwright
British filmmaker Rupert Wainwright has directed features ranging from Disney's “Blank Check” to the horror movies “Stigmata” and “The Fog,” but he's currently tackling a very different assignment — selling Russia to the rest of the world for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. As founder of Los Angeles-based advertising agency Adore Creative, Wainwright developed and produced a series of short films that helped Russia win its bid to host the World Cup in 2018. Adore also created and produced several TV commercials and promotional films that helped Russia land this year's Sochi Winter Olympic Games, the 2013 University Games (the...

'Sinister' Duo Set to Adapt 'The Outer Limits' for MGM
It seems the only time I can find that I wrote about a possible big-screen adaptation of The Outer Limits was way back in 2004 when Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) was attached to direct. Unless I'm missing something I haven't covered it before or since, but today THR brings word the newly crowned director of Marvel's Dr. Strange, Scott Derrickson, has been tapped to write a screenplay for the long gestating feature alongside his Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill. "The Outer Limits" was a sci-fi television program that first aired back in the mid-60s and was then remade and aired on Showtime from 1995 to 2002. Here's how the THR story describes the plot: The duo will be tackling time travel, alien invasion and genetic manipulation in adapting the episode, which focused on a man with no memory beyond the last 10 days and a computerized hand who discovers he is from the future.

Isa of the Day: Electric Entertainment
This is the first of a daily report on the various international sales agents who will converge at the Loews Hotel in Santa Monica for 10 days beginning November 4 at the American Film Market.

The film and television production company Electric Entertainment, owned by producer/ writer and previously an actor, Dean Devlin, has recently launched an international theatrical film and television sales and acquisitions division. Devlin has appointed industry veteran Sonia Mehandjiyska to run the new division, which will represent Electric’s original productions as well as third-party product from A-list filmmakers and seasoned television producers from around the globe.

Dean Devlin's Electric Entertainment has recently acquired two new projects, Critical Hour and No Good Deed as director vehicles for Devlin and Electric's Marc Roskin respectively. Eric Tipton wrote Critical Hour, and Brandon Boyce ( Apt Pupil, Wicker Park) penned No Good Deed. Devlin, Roskin and Electric’s Rachel Olschan are producing both projects.

Dean and I spoke together about his plans and his incredible trailblazing in the international film business.

How was Toronto?

Toronto was interesting as the place to begin international sales again. It's been a while since I started Voltage with Nicholas Chartier.

What decided you to return to international sales?

Since 2004, we have been independent and we have about 100 hours of entertainment. We have studios in Portland, a state-of-the-art post-production facility here in L.A. We think we can leverage all these assets to bring down costs, not only for ourselves but for others. We want to capitalize on what such a workflow can bring to the marketplace.

What size films are you looking to make and represent internationally?

$25 million and under to start. We want to build on our brand identity. We want to continue with the genres we have been doing.

I notice that you began as an actor in 1980 as the boy in The Bodyguard, and then you wrote 1992 you wrote Universal Soldier. Then you wrote and produced Stargate and Independence Day. Are you still writing?

Yes, in fact I wrote and am now producing Geostorm with Skydance Pictures' David Ellison and Dana Goldberg and Paramount.

(Author’s note: I just realized, as I write this, that Geostorm will actually be Dean’s directorial debut!)

Will Paramount release U.S. And Electric Entertainment take foreign?

No, actually Paramount will take worldwide rights to this film as it is larger than those we will take on initially.

I notice you also are working in television. Which do you prefer, TV or theatrical?

When I started, TV was very formulaic. Now movies are more expensive and predictable and TV has exploded. With all the channels, it has become more creative. I love TV as much as I love film.

You have also produced documentaries – well you exec produced Who Killed the Electric Car? and other docs (Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story and Bellflower , Becoming Santa and Go Far: The Christopher Rush Story) give you thanks. Will you continue with docs?

We all know about passion projects. I don't have plans for docs, but there are some which I feel passionate about and so I get involved with them.

Any plans for U.S. Distribution?

No plan yet. But it's interesting to see all the forms of releasing, like iTunes releasing before theatrical on certain types of films. Perhaps in the distant future we will get into U.S. Distribution, but not yet.

You showing such intelligence in your planning and executing. It's a pleasure to see you at work.

Thank you. I think that to have any creative freedom requires risk taking. People are quick to criticize the studio system but we know they are taking risks every day and I think we need to share the risk which is what I am doing.

Well you are really keeping up with the times and the changes and I wish you great success. And thank you for taking the time to talk with me about Electric.

Industry vet Sonia Mehandjiyska serves as Head of International Distribution

Mehandjiyska introduced Electric’s slate to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival and is proceeding on sales at the American Film Market. She was previously Head of Sales at Global Screen, a Bavaria-Telepool joint venture in Munich, Germany, where she negotiated license agreements on theatrical films, TV Series and M.O.W.’s for one of Europe’s biggest libraries.

Since 2003, Mehandjiyska has served in a variety of international distribution positions with Gibraltar Entertainment, Lightning Entertainment and Echo Bridge, where she served as Vice President of International Sales in their London office.

Devlin commented, “Sonia’s business acumen, professionalism, and taste for material represents exactly what I am looking for in the person we want to head our new division. We welcome her to the Electric family, and look forward to working with her as we present our product to the global marketplace.”

“I am thrilled to be working with Dean as he builds Electric into a full-service independent production and distribution company. His reputation and astonishing body of work is indisputable, and an inspiration as I move half-way across the globe to join the company,” said Mehandjiyska.

The first project for the new division is The Wannabe, a film written and to be directed by Nick Sandow, starring Patricia Arquette ( Stigmata, True Romance, “Boardwalk Empire”), Vincent Piazza ( Jersey Boys, “Boardwalk Empire”), and Michael Imperioli (“Oldboy,” “The Sopranos”). Martin Scorsese will Executive Produce the project. Electric Entertainment is fully financing the film and Executive Producing along with Traction Media (Short Term 12). Lizzie Nastro (Bluebird) and Michael Gasparro are producing. Set in New York City during the early 1990s, the film centers on Thomas (Piazza), a man obsessed with mob culture who attempts to fix the jury in the trial of John Gotti. But as the plot is foiled and he’s rejected by the ones he idolizes most, he sets off with Rose (Arquette), a neighborhood fixture, on a ride worthy of mob lore.

Electric recently wrapped its fifth and final season of TNT’s action-packed drama “Leverage,” which starred Academy Award® Winner Timothy Hutton and was Executive Produced by Dean Devlin, John Rogers, Chris Downey and Marc Roskin. “Leverage” won the 2013 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Cable TV Drama.

Electric’s other television credits include TNT’s "The Librarian" starring Noah Wyle, which was the highest rated movie on cable that year (2004), its sequel, “The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mines” and the third installment of the franchise, “The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice.” Along with Bryan Singer’s Bad Hat Harry production company, Electric produced SyFy Channel’s “The Triangle,” which won an Emmy for its Visual Effects, and was the highest-rated miniseries on the cable channel since “Steven Spielberg Presents Taken” (2002).

Devlin is currently in pre-production on his feature directorial debut, Geostorm, which he is producing with Skydance Pictures’ David Ellison and Dana Goldberg and his Electric Entertainment team of Marc Roskin and Rachel Olschan. Paramount retains worldwide rights to the film.
