The episode parodies the action-thriller film Speed and the sequel Speed 2: Cruise Control. Speed 3 was written after the show's writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews asked themselves: "How can we make a worse sequel than Speed 2?" On Channel 4's Father Ted Night this episode was voted the fans' favourite episode.

The possibility of a third film is slim. According to Keanu Reeves and director Jan de Bont, a sequel is "highly unlikely" due to the film being critically panned by almost all critics and a box office bomber. Jan initially hoped to create Speed (1994) into a series, starting with Speed 2 and had high hopes for Speed 3, but he failed as the sequel was flopped and after coming under a storm of criticism, Jan chose to abandon the project. Speed 2 basically "killed the series". Another strange thing is that Jan de Bont hasn't directed another film since 2003.

Decades passed with Keanu declining the possibility of a sequel and a third film saying that there won't be a third film or if there is, he won't be in it. However, in fall 2014, Keanu's thoughts changed as he expressed interest in the Speed film series and for the first time since saying "No" he hoped to return as Jack and even gave the sequel a thrilling title: Speed 3: The Redemption. He said that while there are still no final plans, he opened up the possibility of a sequel. But as of 2015, the film isn't even in production
