Let’s be honest, of course the No. 1 title everyone is waiting to watch is Greg Daniels and Michael Koman’s “The Paper,” which sees the film crew that documented the hilarious fictional paper company Dunder Mifflin take on its new subject, The Toledo Truthtellers, a newspaper based in Toledo, Ohio.

In addition, “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” Season 6 will also be dropping on the platform, giving Bravo fans more drama and fun for the fall season.

The Most Underrated Horror Anthology Ever Is Streaming for Free
Image
Who doesn’t love a horror anthology? There’s something inherently reassuring about multiple stories in a single package. If you don’t like the segment you’re watching, there’s another one on the way. With that said, some anthology efforts feature a crowd-pleasing lineup of vignettes with no missteps in sight. Such a feature exists in the 1995 horror anthology Tales from the Hood. But somehow, this effective effort remains relatively unsung outside of its small but dedicated fan base.

If you are among the uninducted, we have good news to share: Tales from the Hood is now streaming on Tubi. If you opt to check the film out, you’ll surely be taken with the picture’s penchant for entertaining storylines steeped in social commentary. This is a film that’s both engaging and profound. In a sense, this is elevated horror from a time before that terminology was commonplace.

‘Freaky Tales’ Brings Chaos, Cops and Killer Cameos
Image
A warped love letter to the Bay Area’s raw energy and rebel spirit, Freaky Tales arrives in select UK cinemas from 18 April before hitting digital platforms on 28 April. Directed and written by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the filmmaking duo behind Half Nelson and Captain Marvel, the new feature throws a Molotov cocktail of styles into a vibrant, blood-splattered mixtape of mayhem.

Set in 1987 Oakland, Freaky Tales delivers four interlocking stories, each one pulsing to its own beat but building towards a shared crescendo. The film moves between an underground rap duo trying to break out, a disgraced cop skimming the surface of violence, a grieving teen punk bent on revenge, and an NBA star caught in a moral quagmire. It’s a world in flux, where fantasy bleeds into reality, and battles play out on the graffitied backstreets of a city cracking at the seams.

‘The Wild Robot’ Returns to VOD Lead and Will Smith to Netflix #1 — This Time with 2015’s ‘Focus’
Image
For the second time in two weeks, a previous #1 VOD release, still at premium price, returned to #1 after a week in a lower position.

“The Wild Robot” (Universal), still #4 in theaters this weekend parallel to home availability, repeats the move “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros. Discovery) managed last week.

The rise comes for two reasons. First, a lack of competitive new releases, including disinterest in “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Wbd). Second is likely its rental price reduction from an initial premium at $24.99 to the more standard $19.99 PVOD cost.

After over three weeks where five different original movies took the top daily spot, Will Smith, whose “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” was his last studio #1, returned with his 2015 mid-level success “Focus.” But for most of the week, “Meet Me Next Christmas” led their list.

Fandango (which ranks by revenue) and iTunes (by transactions) both also list the “Beetlejuice” sequel and “Deadpool & Wolverine...

‘After Midnight’ – An Underseen ’80s Horror Anthology
Image
I first discovered After Midnight (1989) during my freshman year of college. There at I Luv Video was this VHS tape that gave me nostalgia for a movie I actually hadn’t seen yet. The woman on the cover, a character played by Jillian McWhirter, was quite literally trapped in time, and the tagline beneath her fiery fate read: “Anything Can Happen in the Dark.” As it turned out, my little case of memory distortion was rather fitting; this movie starts off with someone having a vague recollection, albeit of a terrible event.

Growing up I had passed by After Midnight many times at my local video shop, but it wasn’t until some years later that I gave it a watch. And after witnessing the nightmarish fate of those college students enrolled in The Psychology of Fear, I was hooked. Jim and Ken Wheat’s movie — their horror debut as...

Delirium House (1978)
Keep the Halloween Spirit Alive With Alamo Drafthouse’s Terror Tuesdays and Weird Wednesdays
Delirium House (1978)
November 1st is a tough day for horror hounds. The decorations are still up, the air remains crisp, but the spirit has seemingly moved on, perhaps vanquished by the sun. Alamo Drafthouse says to hell with all of that and has announced two month’s worth of genre joy that’ll take you from Dia de los Muertos to Christmas Eve with minimal whiplash.

Terror Tuesday is a weekly slash-and-thrash through the world of horror, and they’ve booked a number of holiday-tinged forever classics mixed in with new canon-busting entries, many of which are screening from new, sparkling scans. Highlights include Lake Mungo, Tales from the Hood, The Changeling, and a pre-Thanksgiving feast with the Sawyers.

Weird Wednesday is similarly a weekly exploration of exploitation, pop oddities, and underloved gems. (Think of it as channel-surfing a transmission from a better dimension). And like Terror Tuesday, they’ve loaded it...

The Best Fictional Bands in Movie History
Image
We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.

This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. Also, we’re looking at fictional groups here, so the Ramones from Rock & Roll High School don’t show up, nor do Talking Heads,...

Interview with the Directors of Satanic Hispanics: Mike Mendez, Alejandro Brugués, Eduardo Sánchez, Gigi Saul Guerrero, and Demián Rugna
Image
Coming like a bat out of hell to theaters September 14th is the long-anticipated Latino anthology horror film Satanic Hispanics. Filmmakers Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!) and Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead) spearhead this fun, yet creepy grindhouse-like horror adventure, combining their artistic forces with horror filmmakers Eduardo Sánchez (The Blair Witch Project), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Culture Shock), and Demián Rugna (Terrified). These five Latinos groundbreakers in horror bring their unique styles in distinctive segments that are intertwined in a police investigation of a mysterious and sadistic massacre, with a lone survivor telling horrific tales that are beyond belief.

All five directors share what films and filmmakers impacted them, how Satanic Hispanics came to be, their segments, and the importance of Latino participation in horror.

What is your favorite horror movie?

Mendez: I have two, my favorite horror movie and the best horror movie. The best horror movie is The Exorcist.

Morgan Freeman and Josh Hutcherson Play With Time Travel in 57 Seconds Trailer
Image
Josh Hutcherson and Morgan Freeman learn how to travel through time in the first trailer for 57 Seconds. The upcoming science fiction adventure from Highland Film Group is directed by Rusty Cundieff (Tales from the Hood), and is coming to theaters and in September.

Time travel has always been an interesting subject for movies and tv shows to explore, and it's been present in mainstream and independent projects since always. But the most interesting thing about Cundieff's new film is that the time travel experience is limited to 57 seconds, so how much can actually be changed in that little time? A lot, apparently.

Hutcherson and Freeman will be joined by Lovie Simone, Greg Germann, Sammi Rotibi, Lucius Baston, and Aaron Jay Rome in this action-packed adventure. Here's the official synopsis and trailer:

"Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) star in this heart-racing action thriller.

David Alan Grier
David Alan Grier Performed an Unscripted, 10-Minute Sermon During His First Take in ‘They Cloned Tyrone’: ‘It Was Amazing’
David Alan Grier
David Alan Grier performed a 10-minute, completely unscripted sermon during his first take on the Netflix’s film “They Cloned Tyrone.”

“True story: his first take, we rode with him,” the film’s director Juel Taylor said.

In Taylor’s feature directorial debut, Grier plays a vibrant minister who leads the congregation at Mt. Zion Church of the Holy Ghost, a fictional church set in the made-up town The Glen. Unbeknownst to its members and Grier’s character, the church has been one of the government’s targets in its insidious scheme to hypnotize and control the predominately Black community’s residents via the communion beverage.

Grier’s character enters at a little over an hour into the film, where he begins a sermon about obedience. Taylor says Grier’s first take was a completely unscripted, 10-minute sermon.

“[Grier’s] like, ‘Can I just do my thing on this take? He’s like,...

Tales from the Hood (1995) – The Test of Time
Image
The episode of The Test of Time covering Tales from the Hood was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

For the most part on this show, we are looking at certified classics to see if they still hold up. For the most part, anyway. Looking at you C.H.U.D. We try to look at everything from the cinematography and direction to the acting and special effects. Sometimes though the story ends up being the most important aspect of the movie. Every now and then a movie needs a reappraisal even when it wasn’t a hit at the time or seen as a classic. Look at what happened to The Thing. From box office dud (even though that has been blown out of proportion) and critical hatred to topping...

Anaconda (1997) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Anaconda episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Ryan Cultrera, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

I’ll be the first to admit my mistakes. When I made that Alligator 2 defense, and no, doing that video is not the mistake I’m referring to, I mentioned that the giant monster movie had become somewhat of a lost art, particularly in the ’90s. Then I ended up rewatching Anaconda (watch it Here) and realized I had totally forgotten about it. That’s because it got lost in the likes of Deep Blue Sea and Lake Placid. Both those movies seem to have longer lasting impacts. Deep Blue Sea has that great surprise kill and Lake Placid has, well, it has Betty White. There are others, too. The Relic is a gory fun time, Bats isn...

Bitch Ass and Making a New Horror Icon (Exclusive)
Bill Posley
To this day, filmmaker Bill Posley will not say “Candyman” five times while looking in the mirror. But he will write him a letter.

It sounds strange, but that turned out to be the exact way to summon the attention of a cinematic legend like Candyman actor Tony Todd and to request that he consider a pivotal role in Posley’s new slasher movie and directorial debut, Bitch Ass.

“We were looking for somebody to be our Vincent Price, this Crypt-Keeper type, intro-ing the movie,” Posley says. Eventually, the Bitch Ass writer-director and his collaborators came around to the idea of reaching out to the statesman of the type of Black horror they aimed to resurrect; the only thing was that Todd would only accept queries by mail—and return with a call of his own.

That call eventually came when Posley was on another job. Standing in an Arkansan...

Indie Horror Month 2022: A Look Back on the Independent Horror Scene of the 1990s
Image
While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.

After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

‘Stoker Hills’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Tony Todd, David Gridley, Vince Hill-Bedford, Steffani Brass, Eric Etebari, William Lee Scott, Tyler Clark, John Beasley | Written by Jonah Kuehner | Directed by Benjamin Louis

Stoker Hills gets down to business early, starting with a lecture on film by Professor Smith. That gets the film’s celebrity cameo out of the way in the film’s first five minutes. It also uses those scenes to introduce the three of his students who will be the film’s leads, aspiring filmmakers Ryan, Jake (Vince Hill-Bedford; American Fighter) and Erica.

While shooting their class project, a zombie hooker film entitled Streetwalkers, which was also Stoker Hills’ original title, a car drives by and stops just long enough to drag Erica in before racing off with Ryan and Jake in pursuit with their camera still running.

They don’t return but the camera is found and two of the town’s cops...

Apollo 10 e mezzo (2022)
SXSW Film Festival 2022 Round-Up
Apollo 10 e mezzo (2022)
Barely over two years ago, the Den of Geek staff was mere days away from heading to Austin when the inevitable happened: SXSW and all its strange and glorious intersections of film, music, technology, games, and more was canceled due to the then only dawning Covid-19 pandemic. A virtual alternative eventually went forward some months later, and there was a virtual SXSW in 2021 as well, but to concede things haven’t been the same in Austin is an understatement.

Which is perhaps why nearly every face, and every person we spoke with, over the last several weeks in the Texas state capital seemed to have an incorrigible grin on their face. Be they fans or filmmakers, actors or music artists, or even just folks walking down the street, the thrill and good vibes was everywhere. SXSW is back where it once belonged.

During that time, we were able to get...

‘Bitch Ass’ Review: Bill Posely Crafts A Hilarious Homage To Black Horror [SXSW]
Image
From the moment Tony Todd, playing Titus Darq, a pencil mustache master of ceremonies hosting a “Good Horror Movie Night,” appears on the screen with a Vincent Price inspired cackle, you know Bill Posley’s hilarious homage to 1990s Black horror, “Bitch Ass,” knows exactly what movie it wants to be. In his opening welcome, accentuated by comical splashes of thunder, the keys of a creepy piano, and the nostalgic buzz of a VHS tape, Darq makes allusions to “Candyman,” “Tales from the Hood,” “Bones,” and so forth to prime viewers for Posley’s deliciously schlocky vision.

‘Bitch Ass’ Review: The Black Slasher Canon Gets an Amusingly Gruesome New Entry
Image
Invoking an oft-overlooked canon, actor turned director Bill Posley fabricates a highly entertaining homage to the Black horror of decades past with “Bitch Ass,” a slasher picture set in 1999 aiming to become the heir of cult classics the likes of “Blacula” or “Bones.” Posley’s genuine fondness for his predecessors in the genre is first visible in the perfect casting of Tony Todd, who played the title part in the original 1992 “Candyman,” as a TV horror host — think the famed Elvira, the Cryptkeeper from “Tales from the Crypt,” or Mr. Simms from “Tales from the Hood” — to introduce his

Reveling in an appropriately malevolent laugh, Todd describes Bitch Ass as “the first Black serial killer to don a mask” and then immerses us into his world through an old television set and a VHS tape. Right off the bat, Posley announces his murderous protagonist’s fascination with games of all...
