What makes "Ren and Stimpy" so brilliant?
Well the humor is great, the stories are surprising, the characters are grotesque and the dialogue is highly inventive.
Yet this cartoon isn't for small children since a lot of the humor is very difficult to understand and sometimes even political. Therefore I would recommend it to people aged from 12 or so.Then it is a true blast!
Besides Ren and Stimpy other brilliant characters are Muddy Mudskipper,The Powdered Toast Man,Haggis MacHaggis,Mr. "No Sir,I don't like it" Horse,Wilbur J. Cobb and of course the legendary Lummox.
My favorite cartoons are "The Lair of the Lummox","Black Hole","Ren's Toothache","Sven Hoek","Big Baby Scam","Stimpy's Fan Club","PreHistoric Stimpy","Dinner Party" and "Reverend Jack Cheese". Besides those cartoons there are several brilliant short commercials like "Log" and "Chicken in a drawer".
And last but not least there is the great use of classical music in the series. The makers often use music from my favorite composer Tchaikovski, especially the "Nutcracker".
A big thank you to John K. for his work! 10/10

This was one of the first cartoon shows to shock parents everywhere, even before Beavis and Butthead and South Park. Ren and Stimpy was one of the best Nickelodeon shows, but it was on TV during Nickelodeon's high point. All of the gross out humor was great, even though it sickened many parents, as well as a few kids. As a kid, I never really got grossed out by any of the gross out humor in this, but now that I am much older, I realize how dark, graphic, and often insane this show was, and I LOVE IT!!! The show followed a scrawny dog named Ren, and a very overweight cat named Stimpy. Normally with on screen duos, the short one is smart and the big one is stupid, that is definitely how Ren and Stimpy are.
This is one of the best and most popular cartoons of all time, with everything from its gross out humor, to its unique characters. This had a very big audience, considering that adults and teens watched this, and still do watch it, just as equally as younger kids. If you are worried about your kids being affected by shows, then you might want to think twice about letting them see this, and if you are easily grossed out, you might not want to watch this. Otherwise, I'm sure you'll buy into the hype of this show just as many others have.

OH JOY!! Ren & Stimpy is indeed one of the greatest cartoons ever in the world. The show's humor was definitely the best, and the content of the episodes are classic. From selling rubber nipples to the great outdoors, "The Ren & Stimpy Show" is without a doubt one of the best cartoons to grace my TV set. If you have never seen this show make sure you do! For whenever you watch this show you will know this show is a true classic. Just watching the beginning theme song you know you are in for a show with goofy and somewhat gross humor that never wears out. I could watch an episode 10 times and still laugh at it because it's humor is timeless. You will not know true American Animation until you watch "The Ren & Stimpy Show".
It deserves a 20 out of 10 but for now I'll give it a 10 out of 10

Johnny K. drop kicked animation into the next phase when he created this masterpiece.
Non-stop non sequitors were all over the place. I couldn't stop laughing. And the situations seemed to be an ongoing contest of how unrealistic can we be. The deadpan deliveries added to the fun.
Kirsch lost the rights to this at one point and the new owners RUINED it. It became an abuse/gross-fest. So make sure you see the Spumco versions only.
The DVD has it all un-cut now. And it's still funnier than anything on today. Seth MacFarlane had to have been a fan.
This and the great "Liquid Television" deserve to be kept alive.

"Ren & Stimpy" is by far one of THE grossest television shows ever, but unlike most shows that try to be gross, this show is pretty damn hilarious. This great show lasted for only five seasons; however, Nickelodeon fired the show's creator, John K., thus seasons 3-5 pretty much sucked when compared to seasons 1 & 2. Despite Nickelodeon showing this series, it really wasn't for kids anyway, especially in this crappy PC environment that plagues today's television. My recommendation is to check out seasons 1 & 2 of this brilliant show. Fortunately, there will be a DVD set that contains seasons 1 & 2 that will be UNCUT, which means that the scenes butchered from Nickelodeon are now restored in all of its glory. I personally put "Ren & Stimpy" up against "Rocky & Bulwinkle", and "Looney Tunes" as one of the great classics. Although it only lasted two seasons,(I am overlooking season's 3-5, since they were done by a different company and were crappier) this classic show will live in our memories and on DVD October 12th.

I love the Ren and Stimpy Show. While quite crude and vulgar, like Rocko's Modern Life, it is also very funny and entertaining. And I do consider it one of my favourite Nickelodean shows along with Rocko's Modern Life and The Angry Beavers.
Why do I like Ren and Stimpy? Well the animation is great for starters, quite unique ins style, but it is colourful with interesting character designs. The music is memorable too, especially the theme tune which is one of one of the best in my opinion for any Nickelodean show. The writing is clever and funny if crude, you decide for yourself whether it is your taste or not, while the stories are interesting. I love the characters, I find them very likable and endearing, and the voice acting is top notch.
Overall, a great favourite of mine. 10/10 Bethany Cox

I've stated in some of my other reviews that the 1990s were the golden-age of animated television, and the second golden-age of animation in general. Well, this show here is one of the main reasons for that. "The Ren & Stimpy Show". Ren Hoek is a psychotic, short-tempered, greedy chihuahua. Stimpson J. Cat (nicknamed "Stimpy") is Ren's blissfully stupid best friend, a cat who loves his litter box, watching cartoons and "The Happy Happy Joy Joy Song" by Stinkywizzleteets. Ren is often mean to Stimpy. He calls him names, he slaps him, he chokes him, and one time he even plotted to kill him. But despite this, Ren really does care about Stimpy. Ren's softer side is actually seen quite often in the earlier episodes. These two crazy animals get into many crazy situations in a style reminiscent to the animation golden-age. Other characters on this show include... Mr. Horse: a horse who always has a different job; Powdered Toast Man: a superhero made of toast; Haggis McHaggis: a short Scottish man who was once the star of a hit cartoon show; Wilbur Cobb: a crazy, senile old man; Muddy Mudskipper: a celebrity who seems nice on TV, but is a greedy jerk in real life. Not unlike Krusty the clown from "The Simpsons". There are also many unnamed characters like the fireman, the fat lady, or the married couple who's faces are never shown.
Ren & Stimpy was the third of the original three Nicktoons (with the first two being "Doug" and "Rugrats"). And it's also the best. Now, "Rugrats" was great... in it's early years, and "Doug" was great too, but "Ren & Stimpy" was just... amazing! As I've said earlier, it was kind of like the classic animated short films from the golden-age (1930s-'50s), but with a twist. It had a lot of classic Warner Bros., Disney, MGM, and Hanna-Barbera elements. Like the classical music, the zany slapstick humor, the witty and sarcastic humor, or the fact that Ren and Stimpy were almost completely different characters in a different time period in many episodes. Sometimes they were nature show hosts, sometimes they were spacemen, sometimes they were pets, sometimes they were bums looking for food and a job, but most of the time they were just two friends living in a house together.
At the same time "Ren & Stimpy" was an homage to the animation golden-age, it was also a satire. It made fun of politics and society, while it also referenced lots of cartoons and other things from the '50s and '60s, and it had surprisingly a lot of adult references for a cartoon airing on a kids network (though a lot of these scenes were cut). "Ren & Stimpy" was truly a brilliant cartoon. "Ren & Stimpy" also had a lot of insane, gross, and twisted humor, but it was handled so perfectly that it actually made the show even funnier!
Also, the animation on this show was fantastic. Everything moves smoothly, the way the characters' lips move match their words perfectly. Especially in season 2. The faces on the characters have the perfect blend of real human expressions and extremely unrealistic ones, and it's great to see the detail and effort John Kricfalusi put into these characters. The episodes "Sven Hoek" and "The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen" are the best examples of this wonderful animation I'm talking about. They are some of the best animation ever done in cartoon history.
"The Ren & Stimpy Show" was just great. It had everything. Amazing voice acting, brilliant writing, hilariously off-the-wall characters, and superb animation. It truly is a masterpiece in comedy and cartoons. Not only the best Nicktoon, or one of the best '90s cartoons, but one of the best animated TV shows of all time. Maybe even THE best animated TV show of all time. I am not kidding. If you are a cartoon fan and haven't yet seen "The Ren & Stimpy Show", you are really missing out. It may not be on TV very often nowadays, but a lot of the episodes have been posted on video websites such as YouTube, and DailyMotion. Also, the entire show was released on DVD in three volumes back in 2004 and 2005. I highly suggest buying those DVDs on eBay or Amazon.com.

"Ren and Stimpy" would dominate the early 90's as it was a kids watch and popular cartoon. The show featured the most extreme adventures of a crazed cat and dog the gags and plot were often far out and very funny. The show was blunt and a little gross with things however many kids and parents may be turned off by the wild violence and crazy chases still it was a fun thrill ride to watch!
This will be very short. Already enough good and interesting reviews here. Just wanted to mention that this is one of the greatest cartoons ever made. Together with the animated series from Batman for me though. Most original for sure.
If you read this: go read better reviews, or just go and see the damn show! Fmovies has got the first full season online for free. (Season 1 and 2 are the best, John K wasn't involved further on)

One of the most subversive/surreal cartoon series of the 90's. One that makes you think way outside reality, even in it's more grounded moments. Season 1-2 are highlights for demonstration different styles of background layout work, done in house at Spumco by trained animators. They where working as background / layout artists on marketing driven cartoon's of the 70's, early/late 80's. They wanted to brake the false method of cartoon marketing ad's and create a program based around character driven cartoon's of the golden age of animation, with fake ad's to fill in for commercial air. Some episodes are so off- kilter and dissuading that it almost makes you feel uncomfortable, and out of your element. It really is a testament to how having good writing/story telling, and animation can make a show like this be one of the network's best/ if not best kid's program on a network that had more educational programming like Rugrats/ Doug. It's in a league of it's own. Strange, Surreal, and always out there.
The Ren & Stimpy Show A Smashing Blast From The Past.
A Classic Nicktoon and one of the Greatest Cartoon's of All-TIme.
Also, I saw this article on Common Sense Media about the Show.
Is It Any Good?
No matter what format it's in, Ren & Stimpy is still too edgy and adult for younger children. Teens may enjoy the scatological humor and the occasional attempt at social satire, but Ren & Stimpy's once-shocking take on classic cartooning is old hat now. It's been done, and it's been done better.
On the contrary, I can't think of any cartoon that has done this sort of humor/psychological stuff sense this show. Everything else feel's watered down in comparison.

Ren and Stimpy is one of those cult shows that became really popular because it was original. The animation is very well done, the soundtrack is good, but the humor? Not exactly.
Ren and Stimpy is a very bizarre show that tries to be funny by being insane. And when I say insane, I mean INSANE! The show has disturbing plots such as Stimpy smashing his teeth and then plucking out the nerves in his mouth very slowly so that he can wish for his teeth back. Another plot is Ren farted and believes he had a kid when he farted so he searches for several years to find his kid, and it turns out his fart was a kid! They eventually meet up, though the kid is in a gas form, and then the kid marries a dead fish and lives in Stimpy's nose. Yeah...
The most disturbing episode is an episode where Stimpy tries to murder Ren in his sleep because he is jealous of Ren's popularity. It is about a 3-5 minutes scene of Stimpy talking to himself about how and why he should kill Ren. It is very disturbing.
I give the show credit for being creative, having some genuinely funny moments, and having interesting characters but the show is just so disturbing and disgusting that I don't find it really amusing. The show can give me a headache at times.

Very sick, Very ahead of its time! The background is very camp, and reminds you of the old fifties cartoons. The same style of sets and I like when they use people but never show there faces. however this similarity stops there.
Most of the stories are clever and funny with a bit of sick humor and or gross context thrown in. The gags are mostly funny because there taken to their extreme. Like the old WB Coyote falling from the highest cliff over and over and over. Or they play out what we all would like to be doing in real life. They can even poke fun at themselves and do so often. I love them and recommend them to anyone with a good sense of humor, but they are not what I would show my kids.

I love this show. I love everything about it. It's a cartoon masterpiece that should be watched by anyone of any age. It has great characters, a nice classical soundtrack, a great sense of humor, and wonderful voice acting. Let's not forget how beautifully animated this show is. Ren Hoek and Stimpson J. Cat are my favorite cartoon duo. The best episodes are the ones produced by Spumco (1991-1993), but the Games Animation ones (1993-1996) are good too. I think fans of Space Ghost Coast To Coast, Ed Edd n Eddy, Rocko's Modern Life, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Angry Beavers, and the golden age cartoons (Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Popeye) will love it. The Ren & Stimpy Show is a must watch for anyone who loves great cartoons, and hilarious comedy. OVERALL a 10 out of 10, I recommend it for anyone. Out of all the great 90's cartoons (and there was a LOT of great ones) this one is my favorite.

I was in preschool when this cartoon came on TV.
I fell in love with it. Even though it wasn't a kid's show.
Ren and Stimpy is about a Chiwawa and a fat cat who are both friends. They're in a different type of situation in every episode.
The theme to it is very retro. The series is consider to be a recreation of the cartoons from the 40s-50s. The music in it is jazz like and the comedy is like what you'd find in Tex Avery, Hanna Barbara, and Looney Tune cartoons.
You get to see plenty of jokes and random characters. The early seasons are done by Spunco while the later seasons are done by games Animation.
Due to the series being for older viewers and having some mature theme. Nickeleon butchered the series a lot and eventually ended the series by 1995. Which is a shame cause this cartoon is one of a kind.
If you like funny and classic like cartoons, you might like Ren and Stimpy. Your able to get the series on the 3 Box set containing the original series.

I used to watch this show when I was growing up. I remember it very well. If you ask me, it was a good show. I especially remember the opening sequence and theme song very well. In addition to that, everyone was ideally cast. Also, the writing was very strong. The performances were top-grade, too. I hope some network brings it back so I can see every episode. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that I'll always remember this show in my memory forever, even though I'm not sure if I've seen every episode. Now, in conclusion, if some network ever brings it back, I hope that you catch it one day before it goes off the air for good.

1) Classic Animation
2) Catchy Music that stuck
3) Every episode had HILARIOUS GUT-BUSTING content
Unfortunately, Cartoons are not made like this anymore!! This cartoon will always remain in my hearts as one of the greats!!!

Ren and Stimpy was seriously one of the greatest shows in cartoon history! Its not what you usually see in children's shows which is why I love it! My favorite episode would probably have to be Stimpy's invention, Stimpy wants Ren to try out some of his inventions that he created but of course Ren is not pleased with them. Stimpy starts to realize that Ren is unhappy and decides to make a thing called the happy helmet which can make anybody be happy just by wearing it. And who can forget the happy happy joy joy song that plays in the episode. I highly recommend this wonderful animated series!

Hello again today I'm going to review a show that Nickelodeon used to air back in the 90s Called The Ren and Stimpy Show. This show is about a crazy dog named Ren and his Stupid best friend cat named Stimpy and their wacky misadventures. I didn't like this show until August 2005 when on watched it on Nicktoons Network Now know as Nicktoons. Anyway My Favorite episode would have to be Stimpy's Big Day which air on Sunday, August 11, 1991. The show is pretty good. I Saw Most of the Episodes on Netflix in March 2012. Anyway my favorite character is probably Ren because he is very hot-tempered with Stimpy. Anyways I'm giving The Ren and Stimpy Show a 7 out of 10 stars. See you later. The Ren & Stimpy Show was one of the original three Nicktoons (the other two are Doug and Rugrats). It premiered in 1991, and from then on an animated masterpiece was born! Ren and Stimpy are great characters, the writing is hilarious and it even has some adult humor in it, (kids most likely won't pick up on any of it) which just adds to how genius this show is. The show went downhill a little when John Kricfalusi (the man who created this show and voiced Ren) was fired, but it was still good. Everyone should watch this show it is hilarious. I highly recommend buying the DVD sets of this show. It is the best cartoon Nickelodeon ever had, and it's the best cartoon since the golden age! It's the funniest cartoon I've ever seen, and it makes me really mad when I hear people talking bad about it. The Ren & Stimpy Show is an amazing cartoon that is always funny in every episode. This and Rocko's Modern Life will be greatly missed, and will be remembered as being Nickelodeon's best cartoons. Everyone should watch this awesome show.

REN & STIMPY reminds me of another animated show - INVADER ZIM. A lot of people on the Internet might have you believe that INVADER ZIM is the greatest cartoon of all-time. It's really stupid, though. REN & STIMPY is also loved by the Internet but it is far better than INVADER ZIM. Still, the writing on the show isn't very good.
The animation, especially in the first two seasons, which were made by Spumco, is great. I'm not going to deny that. But writing is more important. You can have characters doing crazy and weird things but if they don't say funny stuff along with doing funny stuff, the show won't be as funny, in my opinion.
REN & STIMPY might have been the first cartoon of its kind but other cartoons borrow from it and really made quite a few improvement to the formula. A few examples would be SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS, ED, EDD 'N' EDDY, and THE GRIM ADENTURES OF BILLY & MANDY. Those are all meant for younger audiences and they don't feature the maniacal animation that defines REN & STIMPY, but they were funnier because they had good writing to compliment the animation.
This is just about the series in general, of course. There are some very well-written episodes, such as "Stimpy's Fan Club" and "Ren's Pecs" among others.
And another thing - I think John Kricfalusi did a much better job at voicing Ren than Billy West, or at least I like his interpretation of the character more.
