Besides never missing an episode, our family was a the visiting family on one of the last Friday episodes in 1996 before the disastrous reformatting the did for Fox as "Fox After Breakfast." it was the episode where Bob Barker, as one of the guests, played "Hard Hat Price Is Right" with highway contractors outside. It was not something that Barker had been told about in advance. All folks associated with the show were sincerely genuine and kind. See Bergeron's autobiography for more insights into this show and its failed successor.
Agree with all the great comments about this great show "Breakfast Time" - NOT fox breakfast or fox after breakfast or whatever they called it when it left FX. Fox definitely killed the golden goose. And I totally agree that Bergeron sold out - and threw Laurie under the bus to get there. No wonder that he ended up doing Bob Saget's old job. You reap what you sow. I'll never forget that sad day when Laurie said goodbye in such a classy way - you should have taken notes Tom - and you too Murdoch! It's no wonder that we are bombarded with the crappy writing on network shows and reality shows - nobody in the industry is capable of creating such a gem as "Breakfast Time" anymore. Rest in Peace - you were truly one of a kind.
This was the most unique morning show ever, which is why it failed as soon as the Fox brass got their paws on it and mainstreamed it. By far the most interesting interviews I've ever seen. The laid back atmosphere let people just hang out and talk. Guests you wouldn't care about anywhere else became the rivetting. People like Dom DeLuise and the Captain and Tenille who couldn't buy their way onto other shows lifted this one past all others.
Tom Bergeron's the only person from the show to have any mainstream success, but I can't even look at him anymore knowing he's capable of being genuinely funny instead of reading prepared quips on Hollywood Squares and AFV.
It was lighting in a jar and we'll likely never see anything like it as long as TV execs get involved.

I have to say, this was the best morning show EVER. Imagine this: a studio that's really a huge apartment in New York City, interviews are done anywhere and everywhere (even the bathroom!), one of the hosts is a puppet named Bob, the weather is not only informative, but hilarious, and speaking of weather, the weather man's face was never seen (he always hid behind a newspaper when they got shots of him in his "booth"). Add some celebrities to interview, some awesome segments from the "Road Warriors," who brought new meaning to the on location interview, and do some dancing on Friday, and what do you have? Breakfast Time, the all in one morning show for men and women of all ages, and especially those who are, let's say- young at heart. I miss this show SO much, it's not even funny. This is one show, I would do anything to have on tape....even it only one episode. I suggest anyone who by any chance has a tape or knows of someone who has an "episode" on tape, WATCH it! Cherish for God's sake! Ok. That's my two cents. ---Josh
FX in the early days had interesting, low-key and fun shows like this: Sound FX, the antiques show and especially Breakfast Time.
To me, Breakfast Time filled the void between public access and mainstream network programming. It had the budget to go on location and interview some great guests, plus all the celebrities that just 'dropped-by', but like one other person commented, it was shot in a (large) loft apartment and not a studio.
I did manage to tape 1 hour of a episode because Jill Sobule was on there singing "Merry Christmas from the Family" among her other hits of the day. They were all good shows though and in retrospect I should've recorded them all for prosperity. Like Chevy Chase said in 'Dirty Work' after betting against the Harlem Globetrotters: "Hindsight is 20/20 my friend." Anyway, I don't think there will ever be another like the shows they had during the early days on FX and that's too bad. It was like being with family (you liked... even Bob the Puppet) everyday and looking forward to the craziness and spontaneity that seemed (even if it wasn't) unscripted and off-the-cuff. Good job guys! You are missed...
