Jet Li was one of the most prolific action stars of the 1990s, making a slew of brilliant martial arts and action films back-to-back with great directors. Now, some of his best (and also more difficult to find) films of the era are getting a 4K reissue on digital platforms thanks to Shout! Studios. The five Jet Li classics being re-released are: Tai Chi Master (1993), The Legend (1993), The Legend 2 (1993), Fist of Legend (1994), and The Bodyguard from Beijing (1994). The films become available in 4K on Feb. 18, 2025, through the usual digital platforms. They will also be available together in a digital bundle for the first time on Apple TV and Fandango at Home. The press release from Shout! Studios states:

Early Hong Kong classics from Jet Li, including works from celebrated filmmakers Gordon Chan, Yuen Woo-ping (perhaps best known by western audiences for his work on “The Matrix”) and Corey Yuen will finally arrive on digital 4K on Feb. 18, courtesy of Shout! Studios in collaboration with Li.

Mainland filmmaker Cheng Si Yu is a regular when it comes to action movies showing on the local video streaming platforms. British director Charlotte Wells has brought her first feature, Aftersun, to Cannes and has a big hit on her hands. Appearing in the sidebar Critics’ Week section, Aftersun has become one of the most talked about and beloved films of the festival. And rightly so.

Starring Paul Mescal as a young dad Calum and Francesca Corio making an extraordinary debut as his eleven-year-old daughter Sophie, the film is essentially a two-hander. The action takes place during a cheap package holiday in Turkey at some time in the 1990s, although there are also occasional trips to the present.

Charlotte Wells makes a rather amazing feature debut in the Critics Week sidebar of Cannes with Aftersun, starring Paul Mescal and nine-year-old newcomer Francesca Corio, about a divorced dad and his young daughter taking a low-key summer holiday in a budget Turkish resort, a sunshine break that is a kind of farewell.

Wells’s movie ripples and shimmers like a swimming pool of mystery; the way Wells captures mood and moment, never labouring the point or forcing the pace, reminded me of the young Lucrecia Martel. With remarkable confidence, she just lets her movie unspool naturally, like a haunting and deceptively simple short story. The details accumulate; the images reverberate; the unshowy gentleness of the central relationship inexorably deepens in importance.

Adapted by filmmakers into numerous movies and television series throughout the years, “The Heaven Sword and the Dragon Sabre” is a very popular wuxia (martial arts and chivalry) novel written by Jin Yong (Louis Cha). Back in 1993, Wong Jing directed “Kung Fu Cult Master” starring Jet Li, Sharla Cheung and Chingmy Yau; it was a much darker take than the novel and a box office failure. A planned sequel was never made even though it ended with a cliffhanger, but due to repeated exposure on television, it gradually became a fan favorite.

In a new featurette for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” star Simu Liu explains the myriad of martial arts styles that went into creating the fight sequences of the Marvel film — not to mention immense the effort he and the cast put into training.

Kung fu is an ancient form of martial arts that has been passed down from master to student. Traditionally, kung fu did not have a belt system. Instead, students would signify moving through the ranks with a scroll signed by the master they were training under.

Eventually, belts were used in kung fu to signify seniority within the practice. Masters would pass on different colored belts to their students as a demonstration of moving through their journey toward mastery. Today, moving through the kung fu belt system is proof of achievement and encouragement for students looking to progress.

Unlike karate and other forms of martial arts that have origins in Japan, kung fu has origins in China. Monks practiced kung fu early on for health and self-defense on their quest toward enlightenment.

Robert P. O’Brien is an American self-taught artist/illustrator that works in various mediums, creates shirt designs for 36styles.com and helps run the Kung Fu Fandom Forum hosted by that site. Nicknamed “Kung Fu Bob” because of his love of that cinema genre, in recent years he has created a lot of new, original artwork for DVD and Blu-ray film releases, in addition to book and CD cover art. “Not How We Do Business” sums up the latest episode of Warrior in two ways. First, it’s a line that Zing (Dustin Nguyen) lays on O’Hara (Kieran Biew) when he finally breaks away from being a debt collector for the Fung Hai. “Not how we do business” also works on a meta level, this episode only has one Kung Fu fight. That’s weak for a Bruce Lee inspired show. There are two other fight scenes, but they’re scrappy brawls the likes of which can be found in any action drama.

Bruce Lee fans want Kung Fu, and not just any Kung Fu. As part of the Little Dragon’s legacy, it must be great Kung Fu. The lone Kung Fu scene in this episode is good and serves to introduce a pivotal new character, but that’s not enough.

Disney has been killing it with live-action remakes of their beloved animated movie catalog. While the upcoming Mulan might look like yet another relatively straight adaptation of a previous animated film, it’s not quite the same. Mulan, in 1998 and now, is based on an ancient Chinese legend. Not a fairy tale. Her story was commonly known across Asia long before Disney’s animated feature, and it’s that story (as much as the animated feature) that makes up the inspiration for the new film.

At long last, a sequel to the 2000 martial arts epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is getting under way, with backing from The Weinstein Company. The cast is still incomplete, but with cameras beginning to roll this week, Glee actor Harry Shum Jr. has just been added in a lead role.

Penned by John Fusco (The Forbidden Kingdom) and directed by Yuen Woo-ping (Iron Monkey, Tai-Chi Master), the movie, once subtitled The Green Destiny, picks up the story 20 years after the events of the first Crouching Tiger. It centers on four heroes of the martial arts world — Silent Wolf, Yu Shu-lien, Tie-Fang and Snow Vase — who must use their courage and skills to keep the legendary sword Green Destiny from falling into the hands of the villainous Hades Dai.

Shum Jr. will portray Tie-Fang. Donnie Yen is already on board to play Silent Wolf, and Michelle Yeoh is set to play Yu Shu-lien.

You could do something similar to what editor Robert Grigsby Wilson has done here taking a look at Lana and Andy Wachowski's The Matrix and pointing out all the moments in the film influenced by, or paying homage to, other films, but it is nonetheless fascinating to take such a trip through film and in this case several martial arts features, anime and even a speech from Philip K. Dick. Reboots, remakes, recycled plots are nothing new these days. Just like history is cyclical, so are movies. Directors, writers and actors are influenced by others that have come before them. Hollywood has many innovators, but it is often replicated and nothing is 100% original. The series Everything is a Remix, produced by Kirby Ferguson strives to prove that point. Everyone who has ever made a movie has been influenced by someone before them; even the people who invented the art form had influences from outside film. Of course many people innovate, only to to have their techniques ripped off later, but it's almost impossible to find something that is 100% original in every aspect. For those of you who don't know Woo Ping was the kung fu choreographer of death on The Matrix films, Kill Bill 1 and 2, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Fearless. He was also the director of several classic martial arts films including Snake in Eagle's Shadow, Twin Warriors and Iron Monkey.

Brit DVD label Cine Asia continues to bring classic kick ass martial arts action to UK fans, with their latest offering - starring action superstars Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh - Tai Chi Master (aka ‘Twin Warriors’). The release is basically the same as the U.S Dragon Dynasty version, but still comes chock full of extras, and has the added benefit of being one of the best transfers we’ve seen of this movie. Martial arts fantasy True Legend is an upcoming film I’m very much looking forward to and a new trailer for it has appeared online.

The film is directed by Yuen Woo-Ping who is most famously known for his extensive work as the martial arts choreographer for such films as The Matrix, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Once Upon a Time in China. However, Master Yuen Woo-Ping is also a very capable film director having made numerous fantastic martial arts films like Iron Monkey, Jet Li’s Twin Warriors, and of course the Jackie Chan classic Drunken Master.

Written by To Chi-Long, who also wrote Jet Li’s Fearless, True Legend marks Yuen Woo-Ping’s return to directing feature-length films as he has not done so since 1996 with Iron Monkey 2. Watch the new trailer for True Legend below.
