Rahul Malhotra (Aamir Khan) is the manager of the heavily-in-debt family business. He is also the guardian of his dead sister's mischievous kids. Rahul hires Vaijayanti (Juhi Chawla) as governess. Vaijayanti is a runaway who does not want to marry the man her orthodox family has chosen for her. Predictably, Rahul and Vaijayanti fall in love. Bachelor Rahul Malhotra gets news that his sister and her husband have died in an accident, and he quits his studies to look after his orphaned niece and two nephews. Meanwhile, the family's lawyer briefs him about the children's inheritance, which includes a garment factory, which he must take the responsibility of maintaining until the children come of age. His attempts to level business tactics and bring up the children only lead to frustration; the children physically abuse any maid he tries to hire. His challenges increase with the factory's "Japanese" trained manager, Bhagwati Prasad Mishra. Meanwhile, the children manage to run away to a fair, where they meet Vaijanti Iyer, a young woman who ran away from home to avoid marrying the man her dad chose for her. The children sneak Vaijanti into their home; when all is revealed to Rahul, he decides that she should be the children's governess. He has inherited their business--and their three children, his nephews and niece. He finds the business in chaos under the "Japanese" trained manager, Bhagwati Prasad Mishra (Mushtaq Khan), and as for the kids, they're uncontrollable. His efforts to make sense of the business are met with even more challenges, and his efforts to find a suitable nanny are frustrated with one nanny after another quitting after being subjected to abuse at the hands of the three children. One day the children sneak out to a fair and encounter a runaway, Vaijanti Iyer (Juhi Chawla), who has refused to marry the man of her father's choice. The children and Vaijanti make a hit with each other, and they sneak her into Rahul's house. Rahul Malhotra (Aamir Khan) is an engineering student. His elder sister and her husband die suddenly in an accident. According to their will, Rahul is the caretaker of a garment company (he has to leave his studies for this) that has a pending order of one Lakh shirts to Mr Bijlani (Dalip Tahil) (order has been pending for 3 months). Rahul is also the guardian of his deceased sister's mischievous kids: Sunny (Master Kunal Khemu), Munni (Baby Ashrafa), and Vicky (Sharokh Bharucha). He finds it hard to control the kids, as he is new to this (he takes them to south Indian cultural shows which they find very boring). The kids are very troublesome and no maid or servant would stay in the house.

When the kids cause trouble, Rahul punishes them by locking them in their room (Rahul had promised to take the kids to the carnival, but he had to break the promise as Mr Bijlani wants to meet him the same day to understand the status of his pending order). However, the children escape and head for a carnival in town. Maya (Navneet Nishan) is Rahul's college friend, is rich and has the hots for Rahul. Rahul doesn't share the same feelings towards her. Homi Wadia (Tiku Talsania) is the family lawyer who has been guiding Rahul in the company and family matters. Bhagwati Prasad Mishra "Mishraji" (Mushtaq Khan) is the manager of the garment factory. The factory is full of girls who sew clothes and are attracted to Rahul.

Vyjayanti (Juhi Chawla) is the bubbly daughter of a South Indian businessman and music-lover. Her father wants her to marry Natarajan (Veeru Krishnan), an South Indian music legend, who is somewhat creepy/gay. Vyjayanti refuses to marry him (she wants to marry an ordinary person and not a VIP celebrity); as punishment, she is also locked up and escapes. She meets the three kids at the carnival and they become friends (both parties don't have money and were trying to steal food from the same stall). Vyjayanti explains that she has no home so the children invite her to stay with them.

Mishraji is a Japan trained JIT manager. He has used his training to create 1 Lakh collars for the shirts on order, but now the money and materials are all over. Rahul is pissed with Mishraji's work at the factory and sends him home to take care of the kids. Meanwhile Bijlani wants his order delivered in 15 days else as per contract he will auction Rahul's factory to recover the money.

The children go to great lengths to hide Vyjayanti from Rahul. In a row of hilarious sequences (They hide her in their room or in the kitchen cabinet, they fake Sunny's fever to make sure he is not sent to school), they are always one step ahead of Rahul (when he finds Vyjayanti's dress in his room, the kids turn it on him and ask why he has a girl's dress in his room) before he can discover Vyjayanti. Rahul is further enraged when Mishraji tells him that there are 4 kids in the house and not 3. Rahul calls him a liar and kicks him out. That night, Maya, a burglar and a drunk Mishraji all enter Rahul's house at the same time. Mayhem ensues when the kids thrash Mishraji thinking he is a burglar. The real burglar escapes after eating some food from the fridge. Maya escapes after Vyjayanti finds her hidden in Rahul's closet.

That night, Vyjayanti is revealed. Initially angry, Rahul sees that the children love her (Vyjayanti tells a fake story that she ran away from her house as her stepmom wanted marry her off to a rich old man for money) so he gives her a job as the children's governess. Vyjayanti begins to live with Rahul and the kids and she slowly falls in love with him. Vyjayanti makes the kids realize that Rahul loves them and makes them behave towards him. when Rahul is too tough towards the kids, she counsels Rahul as well. Slowly all of them bond together very well.

Maya turns out to be Bijlani's daughter & is obsessed with Rahul. She wants to marry Rahul, and Rahul approves, as Maya has gotten Bijalni off his backs and given him more money (rs 15 Lakhs) and time (1 month) to complete the shirts order. Rahul knows he loves Vyjayanti, but decides to sacrifice his love to give a secure future to the kids. When Vyjayanti and the children find out about Maya and Rahul's upcoming engagement ceremony, Vyjayanti is heartbroken and the kids are upset, as they dislike Maya. On the day of the engagement, Vyjayanti explains to the kids that she loves Rahul and wants to marry him. The kids come up with a plan to stop the engagement. They crash the party with a dramatic act (Vyjayanti enter the ceremony with the 3 kids and claims that she is married to Rahul and has 3 kids with him), which successfully postpones the engagement but angers Rahul. Back home, he scolds Vyjayanti and she admits that she loves him, shocking him.

The next morning, Bijlani comes with Maya to offer Rahul a second chance (he knows what happened the previous day was just an act). Rahul defends Vyjayanti against their insults (Bijlani wants Vyjayanti thrown out of the house), thereby expressing his own love for her. The mischievous kids chase Bijlani and Maya out of the house with rotten eggs and tomatoes.

As revenge, Bijlani and Maya set on auctioning Rahul's house. Vyjayanti takes Rahul to meet her dad, who offers him Rs 10 Lakhs but he wants Rahul to forget Vyjayanti. Rahul rejects this offer. Rahul asks his workers to work overtime to make up for the shirt orders (they have 24,000 shirts completed and need another 76K in 15 days flat), which the supportive workers agree to. A successful one Lakh shirts are made and loaded onto a truck to be delivered to Bijlani. Bijlani hires some thugs to ensure that the truck doesn't arrive on time. Much to their distaste, Rahul arrives on time with the order (They go to the police, but the police is corrupt. They get a tip from the thief who entered their house earlier, who gives them the location of their truck), and Bijlani and Maya are arrested.

Vyjayanti is reunited with her father, who disapproves of her marrying anyone outside the Iyer clan. All the factory workers, Rahul's colleagues, and the children ask him to allow Rahul and Vyjayanti to marry. With so much persistence, he accepts and Vyjayanti and Rahul are married in a South Indian ceremony.
