Heung Gong wun fung kwong

One of three Hong Kong comedies made with N! Xau after the success of the GODS MUST BE CRAZY films. This one occupies the middle ground with the hopping vampire one being the best and the race one being the goofiest. CRAZY HONG KONG is a surprisingly straight kind of comedy that feels like a Hong Kong version of CROCODILE DUNDEE, with our favourite bushman getting into all kinds of fish out of water scrapes. Sean Lau is well cast in the comedy role as the guy who escorts him around, while Carina Lau is given a substantial part as the female lead. Lots of quirky little touches and character humour make this a breezy watch.

As a sequel to the brilliant "Gods Must Be Crazy` by Jamie Uys this movie is quite passable. I think, everybody loves N!xau, the bushman who never even tried to learn other languages than his own (which makes up the main difference between him and other screen "savages` like Tarzan or George of the Jungle). We want to see him and so we don't care about what happens around him. Sending him to Hong Kong is a lovely idea.

Of course, apart from some successful scenes, the movie is unintentionally funny at best. The actors and actresses from Hong Kong are so helplessly bad and amateurish that sometimes it's rather embarrassing to watch them. But also the guy playing the American boss - didn't they have enough money to employ a professional actor? The story is silly, the characters are most implausible - these facts disturb a little, after all: the movie doesn't do justice to Jamie Uys at all, although it features some references to the first part. Still, as long as we can see N!xau, we tolerate everything else.

What will he do next? Maybe, he becomes a film star and doesn't even notice. He could also take part at the Olympic Games. Whatever: I'm expecting the next N!xau film. As long as he doesn't learn English, it's okay with me.

"Crazy Hong Kong" is a lame continuation of "The Gods Must Be Crazy!" saga, transporting - via accident - N! Xau from the Kalahari desert to crowded Hong Kong. The culture clash is eye-catching for a while, but the novelty, as well as the laughs, run out pretty quickly, leaving only sloppy slapstick behind. The version I saw was also badly dubbed in English (one HK extra actually says "hit the road Jack, and don't you come back no more, no more"). What does survive from this mishmash is N! Xau's unconditional and unwavering good nature; the gorgeous Carina Lau also manages to emerge unscathed. *1/2 out of 4.

Crazy Hong Kong (Gods must be crazy 4), weakest of the 3 HK films with Nixau, but still has funny moments. It takes place in Hong Kong for this one, so its a fish out of water story.

Still i am a fan and worth watching if you like HK comedy or the Gods Must Be Crazy films.
