Ex-mountain rescue ranger Gabriel 'Gabe' Walker (Sylvester Stallone) is reluctantly called out of self-induced retirement to rescue a group of hikers stranded in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Accompanied by former coworkers -- rangers Hal Tucker (Michael Rooker) and Jessie Deighan (Janine Turner) -- they go in rescue, not knowing that the 'hikers' are actually thieves who have just robbed a U.S. Treasury plane of $100,000,000 in uncirculated bills prior to crashing their plane, and what the thieves, led by former military intelligence agent Eric Qualen (John Lithgow), want is the rangers' help getting the money back.

Cliffhanger is based on an idea by American rock climber and author John Long. The idea was worked into a screenplay by American screenwriter Michael France and principal actor Sylvester Stallone.

To put it simply, the British version of this Stallone classic has been heavily censored. 22 scenes were altered and nearly 80 seconds of action sequences are missing.
