Leo Hopkins seemingly has it all: a loving wife, two luxury homes and a highly paid job as a financial market analyst. But Leo is disenchanted by his job and the struggles of his friends, and haunted by memories of his charismatic clergyman father. When he receives a cheque for £50,000 for his brother in law Francis' redundancy, he suddenly decides to use the money to fund a better life and help some of his friends. Unfortunately his method is putting it on the horses to gain big wins, but when he starts losing and then Francis' wife Wendy informs him that the cheque issued was only half the amount issued, things begin to get complicated.

Having persuaded his wife Jane to sell their 2nd home Leo continues to build up his money investment scheme "Hopkins International" and soon he has encouraged a number of his friends to invest in it, including his boss Giles. But then things begin to spiral out of control as cheques begin to bounce and losses at the races continue. He is spotted at one race by Rebecca, making it very awkward when she later moves in with the family after her husband Duncan has an affair with his secretary Boo. But when Mrs Timpson comes to invest with him after her landlord threatens to close her charity, it is then that things take a dark and dramatic turn.

Leo seems to be making a fresh start after he is sacked from his job by setting up his own business and taking his secretary Marion along with him. But in reality things are unraveling, with Leo involved in an affair with Marion and plagued with guilt after Mrs Timpson's body was found in the office underground car park. And his fraudulent actions begin to catch up with him when the fraud squad pay a call on his new practice, leading Leo to go on the run.
