Donald Trump’s threat ahead of Cannes to impose a 100 percent tariff on films made outside of the U.S. has so far — perhaps unsurprisingly — faded without concrete policy action. But the turbulence of the president’s global trade war and a rollback of Dei initiatives could still cloud the Toronto International Film Festival.
“The dollar shift and the current trade wars are absolutely felt in our industry,” says Canadian director Panta Mosleh, who has helmed TV movies for Hallmark, A&e and Lifetime out of Vancouver.
The dollar has dropped more than 10 percent against a basket of major currencies this year, a slide many blame on Trump’s radical trade agenda. A weaker greenback means Hollywood budgets won’t go as far abroad. While unlikely to spark an immediate reshoring of U.S. productions, it could encourage cuts as studios and streamers weigh where to spend.

Prior to 1980, Leslie Nielsen would often be associated with more dramatic roles in movies such as "Forbidden Planet" and "The Poseidon Adventure," in addition to a slew of guest spots across every manner of television show. But that all changed when Wisconsin comedy trio David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker (otherwise known as Zaz) cast him as Dr. Rumack in "Airplane" -- otherwise celebrated as one of the greatest comedies of all time. Nielsen possessed a sneaky advantage over more traditional comic actors due to his stature as a serious performer who said his lines as if he wasn't trying to get a laugh. The deadpan delivery of, "I am serious, and don't call me Shirley," single-handedly altered the trajectory of Nielsen's career, thrusting him into almost exclusively comic roles across slapstick heavy spoof movies like "Wrongfully Accused,...

Just as “My Beautiful Laundrette” launched a little-known English actor named Daniel Day-Lewis, the London-set “Unicorns” spotlights up-and-coming talent Ben Hardy (whose minor roles in “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” don’t begin to suggest his potential). But “Unicorns” and “Laundrette” have more in common than just a compelling lead performer: Forty years after Stephen Frears’ cross-cultural queer romance, neither homophobia nor xenophobia has much abated in the U.K. That makes it tricky to predict quite where the attraction felt by Luke (Hardy), a rugged white boy from Essex, toward a South Asian drag queen (Jason Patel) will take us.
Co-directors Sally El Hosaini and James Krishna Floyd’s scrappy drama shows enormous heart, but it’s the lead actors and their disparate identities that distinguish an otherwise familiar LGBT-themed indie. Hardy has big blue eyes and a boyish-looking face, which balance out Luke’s brutish body language. He’s introduced having coarse,...

While fans (and embittered directors) may be somewhat skeptical about the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun, the movie does boast an impressive cast, including Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., Cch Pounder as the new Police Squad chief and Pamela Anderson as the femme fatale sister of a possible murder victim.
From what we’ve seen so far, Anderson, fresh off of receiving rave reviews for her performance in last year’s The Last Showgirl, seems to fit in perfectly with the seriously silly world of The Naked Gun. This makes sense, considering that she’s previously appeared in other Zaz-style parody movies like Scary Movie 3 and Superhero Movie.
But Anderson likely wouldn’t have gotten the gig had she starred in one of the original Naked Gun films, which, apparently, came very close to happening.

Liam Neeson is one of the best Hollywood talents of his generation, proving an accomplished action star, dramatic lead, and an undeniable funny-man. Nominated for just one Academy Award in his career, for his titular role in Steven Spielberg's horrifying epic Schindler's List, Neeson is worthy of as much praise as he can get, with the Northern Irish actor showing no signs of slowing down as he prepares to debut his take on the iconic Frank Drebin's son in the upcoming The Naked Gun.
Ahead of the Akiva Schaffer movie's release on August 1, one of Neeson's more forgotten entries in a filmography stacked with memorable titles has found unlikely streaming success in the U.S. As of July 1, the fantasy flick High Spirits, which was released several years before Neeson became a household name, is officially one of the ten most-streamed movies in the U.S. on streaming site Tubi.

The Dark Fantastic is an intimate and enthralling look at the vast career of acclaimed film composer Simon Boswell, an amazing musician who has created music for so many films, particularly in the horror and fantasy genres.
He was responsible for an audio spectrum, from Demons 2, Graveyard Disturbance and Phenomena to Hardware and Perdita Durango, as well as cult classics like Shallow Grave, Hackers and The Crying Game. Throughout his career Boswell has worked with the legendary likes of Lamberto Bava, Dario Argento and Clive Barker and has constantly created vast and compelling music for the films that they feature in. The Dark Fantastic tells the entire story of his career through both music and film.
Far from being a standard documentary where film clips are interspersed with interviews, The Dark Fantastic contains continuous live performances of music that Boswell has created, with details about the particular films and the making of them.

A great role can make a career... if there's a decent follow up. A good actor makes you believe they are the character, but sometimes, if they make you believe too well, it becomes impossible to see them as anyone else -- and that turned out to be the case for many of the actors on this list. A significant chunk of them have even been nominated for and sometimes even won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, only to find that the same energy couldn't be duplicated in other parts less perfectly tailored to their skills. Some struggled because of industrywide racial stereotypes limiting their opportunities, while others may have been limited in range to begin with and were incredibly lucky to find the one part that really worked.
A few of these "one-hit wonders" did not remain so forever and should serve as models of perseverance. Others...

When Robert Downey Jr. was up for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards for Oppenheimer, it was his third time getting nominated. He was first nominated for a movie three decades ago for the Best Actor category. He depicted the real-life legend Charlie Chaplin on the screen in Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin.
The film itself was not that great. Not all critics were happy, and the film bombed at the box office. But what none of them could deny was the brilliant performance of Downey Jr. in the titular role. The Iron Man actor shared that he was terrified of the role because of its challenging nature.

Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón has made Oscar history. The titular Emilia Pérez star was just nominated for Best Actress, making her the first openly transgender performer ever nominated in the category. She stars in the musical as a Mexican drug lord who undergoes a gender transition but can’t fully escape her past.
This nomination is historic, but it didn’t come as a surprise. Beginning at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Gascón and costars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz were jointly named Best Actress. Emilia Pérez was then acquired by Netflix, which released it in theaters on Nov. 1 and on its streaming platform on Nov. 13.
Since then, the film has been enthusiastically embraced by awards groups. It received 10 Golden Globe nominations, the most ever for a comedy or musical, including one for Gascón. It went on to win four of those awards, including the top prize for best film.

U.K. comedian and star of the inaugural season of the original Whose Line Is It Anyway? Tony Slattery died today at the age of 65, as confirmed by his longtime partner and the BBC.
Slattery was a native of Middlesex, England and the son of working-class Irish-Catholic immigrants, and his career as one of England’s most beloved comedy performers started when, on the invitation of his friend Stephen Fry, he joined the University of Cambridge’s venerated comedy troupe the Cambridge Footlights. Performing alongside other all-time greats such as Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson, Slattery’s time in the Footlights led to him breaking through in late-night TV comedy shortly after finishing at Cambridge with his acclaimed performance in the series Saturday Stayback in 1983.
Later, in 1988, Slattery joined the project that would become an international comedy sensation in its first season, quickly becoming the star of the original U.

So much so that ABC was confident enough to put up against the sitcom juggernaut Friends at one point. Slattery’s longtime partner, Mark Michael Hutchinson, confirmed the news to the BBC and said the cause of death was a heart attack. “It is with great sadness we must announce actor and comedian Tony Slattery, aged 65, has passed away today, Tuesday morning, following a heart attack on Sunday evening,” Hutchinson said in a statement.
Slattery was a regular on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” which features performers playing short-form improvisation games based on suggestions from a live audience, from 1988 to 1995. He also held roles in films like comedies “How to Get Ahead in Advertising” (1989) and “Peter’s Friends” (1992), as well as crime thriller “The Crying Game” (1992).

Math has never been my strong suit. However, a TV series about numbers that don’t add up and then lead to conspiracies, action, and surprises? Sign me up! Today, Apple TV+ is excited to share a trailer for Prime Target, an eight-episode series starring SAG Award winner Leo Woodall and Quintessa Swindell.
Premiering on Apple TV+ with a two-episode launch on January 22, Prime Target “features a brilliant young math postgraduate, Edward Brooks (played by Woodall), who is on the verge of a major breakthrough. Soon, he begins to realize an unseen enemy is trying to destroy his idea before it’s even born, which throws him into the orbit of Taylah Sanders, a female Nsa agent (played by Swindell) who’s been tasked with watching and reporting on mathematicians’ behaviour.

In the Prime Target trailer, Leo Woodall plays a Newton-ridiculing, mathlete determined to find a pattern in prime numbers. Cracking the code to prime numbers, figures only divisible by one and itself, means access to any computer across the globe. This also makes him the “prime target” for an unknown threat.

Eighties pop icons Boy George and Culture Club are set to conquer Rome.
The gender-bending British singer-songwriter, who gave the world hits like “Karma Chameleon” and “The Crying Game,” will headline the city’s New Year’s Eve concert at Rome’s ancient chariot-racing stadium The Circus Maximus. The stadium, which has hosted the likes of Mick Jagger and Bruce Springsteen, has room for more than 100,000 people. The City of Rome is bankrolling the concert, so tickets to see Boy George are free. The Circus Maximus should be packed.
The gig only came together over the last week. Originally, the controversial right-wing Italian rapper Tony Effe was supposed to be headlining the New Year’s Eve bash, but, on Dec. 16, amid a public backlash, the mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, canceled the performance.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter Roma, the mayor said city authorities had made a mistake inviting the rapper.

Over the decades, The Simpsons has developed a reputation for its movie parodies and homages, but it has angered some fans by spoiling big twist endings. The Simpsons often references movies, putting a satirical spin on iconic scenes and characters in all genres. Everything from Citizen Kane to Star Wars has been skewered by the show's writers, although not many of the show's movie references directly give away the ending.
For whatever reason, The Simpsons seems to have no problem giving away big movie twists. In some cases, the show chooses a famous twist as a punch line, and it's not going to upset many fans to mention that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father, for example. There are other big spoilers that could be more of an issue, like how the show gave away the big twist in The Crying Game less than a year after the movie was released.

/Film has proudly declared the FX mini-series "Say Nothing" some of 2024's best TV, and I could not agree more. Based on an acclaimed non-fiction book by Patrick Radden Keefe, "Say Nothing" is (as the book is subtitled) a "True History of Memory and Murder in Northern Ireland." The story chronicles a half-century of political dissent, threaded through the disappearance and murder of single mother (and alleged British informant) Jean McConville. The two characters we most follow through that thread are Dolours and Marian Price, two sisters inspired to join the Irish Republican Army (Ira) by the failures of peaceful protest and their family's long association with the organization.
Quick history lesson: in 1921, Ireland was partitioned between the 26 free counties and the six Northern counties that remained under British rule. With a majority population of Protestant Unionists, these counties would seemingly never have a popular majority to secede. The Catholic Republicans in Northern Ireland,...

Spike Lee argues that Denzel Washington should’ve won Best Actor for their 1992 biopic, and explains why exactly he lost. Washington was among the nominees when the Oscars for Best Actor were handed out in 1992, having given a powerful performance as Malcolm X in Lee’s unconventional portrait of the slain civil rights leader. But when Oscar night rolled around, Washington was left empty-handed. Instead, Al Pacino took the gold for his performance as a blind man in Scent of a Woman. The controversial decision continues to draw arguments even 30 years after the awards were officially handed out.
Debate rages on about Pacino’s controversial 1992 win over Washington, and Lee knows exactly where he falls in that argument, telling The Realest Podcast Ever that Washington’s loss was “egregious” while going on to explain how the Academy sometimes passes over worthy nominees to reward people they previously snubbed. It’s been three decades since some of Hollywood’s hottest young actors, as well as an up-and-coming young actress, came together to surprise us with a sensual and thrilling gothic horror flick. “Interview with the Vampire” hit theaters on November 11, 1994, almost 20 years after Anne Rice’s debut novel was published. Read on for more about the “Interview with the Vampire” 30th anniversary.
Rice wrote “Interview with the Vampire” after the death of her five-year-old daughter from leukemia, reworking a short story she had written a few years prior. The homoerotic novel about vampires Louis de Pointe du Lac and his sire Lester de Lioncourt was first published in 1976, with the film rights obtained at that time. After years in development hell, Warner Bros. secured the rights, and brought in “The Crying Game” director Neil Jordan, who rewrote Rice’s script, although she retained credit. Growing up, trying to find our way in the world, and making sense of changes can be a difficult and even frightening experience. The awkward uncertainty during the informative years had long found ties with the horror genre as a way to interpret real-life struggles. Combining the two genres has undoubtedly proven to be a successful pairing. From the gruesome Teeth (2007) to the often-celebrated The Craft (1996), coming-of-age horror movies have become fan favorites.
Yet one dark take on the coming-of-age genre is often touted as the best: John Fawcett's Ginger Snaps. Combining lycanthropic terrors with navigating the informative years certainly proved to be an insightful take on the genre, but there is one movie that did the same thing decades before. The Company of Wolves (1984) is often overlooked, but it is on par with Ginger Snaps and shares enough similarities that fans should be howling at the chance to...

In 1994, filmmaker Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) made dreams come true when he cast Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt opposite one another in his fresh production, Interview with the Vampire. Not only were the actors two of the biggest heartthrobs of the decade (and beyond), but the movie would also see them stealing the hearts of goths everywhere as they played two immortal beings tied together for centuries. Based on the beloved Anne Rice novel of the same name, the movie served as the authors gateway into cinematic and televised adaptations and would also become one of the foundational building blocks in the career of Academy Award-nominated actress, Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog).

We don’t get a ton of Gothic or romanticized horror anymore, at least not in the sense of the old days. The old days had a bit of a stretch too as I’m talking about the Universal classics and Val Lewton all the way through at least the early run of Hammer Films. To that end, what creature is more romantic or at least romanticized than Dracula and any of his vampire off shoots? While many of the vampiric screen adaptations have that feel to them from Frank Langella to Gary Oldman and David Bowie sandwiched in between, there are few vampires who embody that ideology more than those found in the writings of Anne Rice. While her novel Interview with the Vampire came out all the way back in 1976, it would take nearly 20 years for the adaptation to hit theaters with the movie of the same name...

The Savannah College of Art and Design is again bringing a generous helping of Southern hospitality to France’s Luberon Valley for the Scad Lacoste Film Festival, which runs June 27 to 29. Now in its third year, the fest was conceived as a top-up highlight for college students doing their semester abroad at Scad’s sumptuous campus in Lacoste, an inexcusably picturesque medieval village in the heart of Provence.
“[Scad founder and president] Paula Wallace always wants to make sure our students have access to the best of everything,” says Christina Routhier, executive director of Scad Theaters and Festivals. “The focus [at Scad Lacoste] is on film majors: acting, directing, production, costume design. So it was a perfect fit to bring in a film festival.”
The event is a complement to the school’s long-running main fest in Savannah, Georgia, which runs Oct. 26 to Nov. 2. Attracting talent to Lacoste, with its Instagram-ready cobblestone streets and lavender fields, hasn’t been a problem.

Zachary Travis Didn’T Know what American Idol was when he auditioned in 2005, because he had spent most of the past decade in a youth correctional facility. Inmates there weren’t allowed to watch television, he says, except on the day of the September 11 attacks. But Travis — who was first incarcerated at the age of 11, for reasons he’s not yet ready to discuss in a public forum — found strength in Christina Aguilera’s ballads of self-love. He says that he connected with the “pain, sorrow, and heartache” in the singer’s octave-defying voice.

Warring with Harvey Weinstein, marvelling at Tom Cruise, realising Mona Lisa and many other films were about himself … the great Irish director looks back on his astonishing career
Neil Jordan has spent his career telling strange, twisting stories that have mesmerised, surprised and occasionally misfired. Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, The Company of Wolves, Breakfast on Pluto – these films all veer off in unexpected directions, ambushing the audience. But it turns out the director saved the biggest twist for himself. Watching some of his films at a festival some years ago, Jordan was startled to see his own private life up there on the screen. It seems he had unknowingly channelled his relationships with his father, his wife and his children into stories about gangsters, terrorists and hot vampires. “I was shocked at how much of myself I revealed,” he says. “It was like a physical shock.”

Fairy tales are the source of many of our favorite fantasy films and tropes. The classics like Snow White, Hansel & Gretel, and Sleeping Beauty have led to some fantastic feature films and many of them crossed into the horror genre, mixing the fantasy with a hefty dose of blood. The original stories that the fairy tales we grew up with came from were not the spic and span Disney fare we would read. They were dark, gritty stories that, more often than not, revolved around a horrible death or two.
They were morality tales guaranteed to make a child’s or an adult’s blood run a bit colder and scare them into listening. One of the most terrifying and cautionary of these tales was Little Red Riding Hood. Not only did the story include a young woman in danger, but it also involved a werewolf who eats her grandmother,...

Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.
“God, I’m still so brutal at this,” the famously shy actor said on collecting the award, presented to him by “Killers of the Flower Moon” star and fellow recent awards circuit regular Lily Gladstone. “But being in this room is so special — being at home, with people that I love and admire amongst my fellow nominees and some of my favorite people.” Speaking backstage afterwards at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, he added: “It feels lovely being home with so many friends and colleagues.”
