Are Kitty Hawks and Lost Teen Based on a Real Bands?
Image
Prime Video’s ‘The Runarounds‘ follows the musical journey of Charlie Cooper and his ragtag group of friends, who also happen to be gifted artists. With college and career nearly at their doorsteps, the crew decides to take a shot at greatness with their band, The Runarounds. However, they are soon confronted by problems at every level, be it creative, operative, or interpersonal, and have to learn how to deal with all of them. The band comes together for their shared love of the craft, which in turn propels them to churn out song after song, each reflecting their present moods and feelings, be it positive or negative. The Runarounds...

Cinema through the Lens of ‘Breathless’ (1960): Girls, Guns, and the Ghosts of Paris
Image
It is not possible to navigate the city of Paris without the eyes of Anna Karina looming up above you. She lies in Père Lachaise about half-an-hours’ walk east of Montmartre, but your eyes meet her’s far before you lay down flowers there — she is plastered on the billboards and in the Metro, smiling, locked into an expression of bemused nonchalance at the prospect of yet another re-release of the nouvelle vague features; maybe even in 4K this time.

It is always Anna Karina season in Paris, and it is always Godard season in Paris. And while Godard’s eyes do not shine out of every countertop photograph like Karina’s, it abruptly becomes clear entering the seedier parts of the city that the world that you observe with your own eyes — the Paris of gangsters and graffiti, of students and revolutionaries — is the world that Godard chose to set his cinema,...

‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’s Cast and Where You’ve Heard Them Before
Image
There are great achievements, and then there’s the feeling of knowing exactly who voiced a particular character just by hearing them for the first time. As great as that feeling is, you probably won’t experience it if you watch Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. For instance, it’s hard to believe that Himmel and Bakugou are voiced by the same actor.

The voice actors have done such a phenomenal job that they’re unrecognizable. Their versatility and talent shine through in their performance, so here are some of the voice actors from Frieren and their most popular roles.

1. Stark – Chiaki Kobayashi Stark during a fight sequence | Credits: Studio Madhouse

Stark is a part of the central trio in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and he’s voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi. The voice actor has also played Mash Burndead from Mashle, Louis James Moriarty from Moriarty the Patriot, and Gabimaru from Hell’s Paradise.

Review: Arthur Penn’s ‘Night Moves,’ Starring Gene Hackman, on Criterion 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Arthur Penn’s Night Moves is one of the great revisionist noirs, taking its place alongside Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye and Roman Polanski’s Chinatown. Like those films, it not only brazenly subverts the tropes of the classic Hollywood private eye film, but also uses the genre’s pervasive aura of moral corruption and social anomie to comment on the American scene in the wake of political scandals and the collapse of the 1960s counterculture into the rampant self-absorption of the Me Decade. All three films eschew pat resolutions, let alone the comforts of a return to status quo order.

Night Moves cadges elements from classic noir films. It lifts basic plot points about the search for the runaway daughter of a moneyed family from Howard Hawks’s The Big Sleep, and emulates that film’s excessively labyrinthine narrative, though here you probably don’t need to pay...

This Upcoming 2025 Anime Will Prove Why Antiheroes & Villains Are Still So Compelling
Image
In its earlier seasons, the original My Hero Academiaanime had a clear dividing line between Pro Heroes and villains, with the Symbol of Peace All Might being the ultimate good and villains like Tomura Shigaraki being irredeemable evil. Starting around Season 5, the anime blurred the line with antiheroes and morally complex villains, and that trend is set to continue in the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime when it launches this spring.

Vigilantes is set 5 years before the main events of My Hero Academia, well before the heteromorph demonstration or the truth of Endeavor and Dabi, so in mainstream society, heroes vs villains still feels like a black-and-white issue. But for audiences who have already seen the franchise blur the line, there will be more to the narrative than heroes vs villains. Once again, the world of My Hero Academia will show the rough side of heroes and the surprisingly innocent side of villains,...

“Exploring the map has changed”: FromSoftware’s Biggest Fumble with Elden Ring Nightreign Is Leaving Out One Popular Character
Image
As Elden Ring Nightreign’s network test kicks into high gear this weekend, players are discovering that FromSoftware’s latest venture into the Lands Between feels dramatically different from its predecessor. While director Junya Ishizaki and his team have reimagined many aspects of the original formula, one particular change has raised more than a few eyebrows.

Not the Lands Between you remember, dear Tarnished. | Image Credit: FromSoftware

The upcoming standalone spinoff promises a fresh take on the Elden Ring experience, with faster-paced combat, three-player co-op, and a shrinking playfield that would make even battle royale enthusiasts feel right at home. But amidst all these innovations, FromSoftware has made a decision that might leave some faithful Tarnished feeling a bit… unmounted.

For those currently participating in the network test, the absence of a certain loyal companion has become immediately apparent. And while the developers insist they have good reasons for this change,...

DGA Awards Noms Analysis: What James Mangold’s Surprise Nom for ‘A Complete Unknown’ May Mean
Image
Everyone assumed that the nominees for the Directors Guild of America’s top DGA Award would include, as they did in Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement, Emilia Pérez’s Jacques Audiard, Anora’s Sean Baker, Conclave’s Edward Berger and The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet.

The question was: Who was going to snag the fifth and final slot?

The aforementioned quartet was recently joined on the Golden Globe Awards’ nominations list by The Substance’s Coralie Fargeat and All We Imagine as Light’s Payal Kapadia; and on the Critics Choice Awards’ nominations list by Fargeat, Wicked’s Jon M. Chu, Nickel Boys’ RaMell Ross and Dune: Part Two’s Denis Villeneuve.

But as exciting and glamorous as those awards shows are, they are actually less reliable predictors of Oscar recognition than the picks of the DGA, which more closely mirrors the directors branch of the Academy, which, in turn,...

Horror Icon John Carpenter's Favorite Movies Surprisingly Aren't Scary
Image
It hardly needs repeating, but director John Carpenter is known for making multiple horror classics, including "Halloween," "The Fog," "Christine," "The Thing," "Prince of Darkness," "In the Mouth of Madness" and "Vampires." Although Carpenter doesn't have a notable, recognizable style or motif in his filmography (apart from recurring actors) he does seem to possess a subtle, natural mastery of filmmaking craft that makes all his films, even the bad ones, imminently watchable.

Carpenter loves horror, of course, but oddly, he's not a horror guy at heart. He possesses an old-world workman's attitude when it comes to filmmaking, just sort of sussing out, by instinct, how to shoot a scene, regardless of genre. Carpenter has given multiple interviews where he's talked about monster movies and sci-fi flicks that inspired him, but moreso, Carpenter talks about the films of John Ford and Howard Hawks, two American filmmakers best known for their high-profile Westerns.

Quentin Tarantino's Favorite Movies Of All Time Always Include This Classic Western
Image
Writer and director Quentin Tarantino is a well-known true-blue cinephile, a deeply devoted fan of films from a variety of genres and eras. He's a fan of everything from sleazy grindhouse exploitation films to classic westerns like the films of Howard Hawks, and he wears his influences loudly and proudly in his own films. So when asked about his favorite films of all time, he has different answers depending on how he feels. There is one movie that he claims to always include in his favorites, however, and he's been pretty effusive about his love for it on more than one occasion.

In an interview with The Talks, Tarantino shared his favorite three films (at that particular moment) and explained that even though two of his top three might shuffle around, he will always feel the need to share his love for the Sergio Leone spaghetti western "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

My Hero Academia Season 7, Episode 16 Review
Image
My Hero Academia's narrative has been hurdling toward its long-awaited conclusion since the debut of its seventh season, and its latest episode titled "The Chain Thus Far" is no exception. Like much of Season 7, "The Chain Thus Far" is full of the intensity, all-out combat and breathtakingly high emotional stakes that My Hero Academia has come to be known for, and throughout its runtime, it captures this by darting between the characters scattered across the growing battlefield. That said, as enjoyable as Season 7, Episode 16 is, it certainly isn't the high point of the series either.

My Hero Academia is nothing if not consistent. Since it debuted in 2016, the show has, for better or worse, been considered one of the best "starter" anime because of its cohesive narrative, clear story clock, and easy-to-follow character arcs. That said, consistency is not always a virtue, and while "The Chain Thus Far" does a...

Best Hawks Fights in My Hero Academia, Ranked
Image
This article contains spoilers for the My Hero Academia manga.

Keigo Takami, also known as Hawks, is one of the most beloved Pro Heroes in My Hero Academia. His smooth style and personable demeanor make him extremely popular. Despite being a Pro Hero, Hawks dreams of a world where Heroes are simply decorations that get to lounge about without needing to fight any villains.

Unfortunately, that is not his lot in life. Hawks is not only a Pro Hero but a government spy working to take down some of the biggest Villains and crime rings in the country. Its not a likable job, but Hawks does it to hopefully achieve his goal one day. With that in mind, Hawks has participated in many landmark battles - including a face-off with One For All. Hawks's idea of a better world may be farfetched, but he will continue fighting until it becomes a reality.

What Happened to Timothy Dalton?
Image
For over a decade, Roger Moore had the task of living up to everything that Sean Connery had put in place as 007. And while some will defend Moore forever, we can’t forget the clown costumes, slide whistles, gondola chases, and so much more that pushed James Bond into an uncharted level of ridiculousness. Perhaps all of this could have been prevented had Timothy Dalton not been so green, turning down On Her Majesty’s Secret Service because he was in his mid-20s. That’s all hypothetical, of course, but Timothy Dalton would go on to reinvent James Bond in a way that may not have sat with contemporary audiences but marked a true challenge for what it meant to carry the torch. Dalton played 007 just twice; and with that, we’d challenge you to name just as many worthwhile post-Bond movies from the underappreciated actor (who we’re...

The film features carefully manipulated pieces of public-domain footage turned into animations, accompanied by an original score composed by Bateman. The non-narrative film introduces 5000 aliens throughout its 83-minute run and is a collection of carefully manipulated pieces of public-domain footage. My Hero Academia is Ditching Deku, and That's a Good Thing
Image
Deku's absence from the final battle in My Hero Academia allowed the series to focus on other characters and their unresolved character arcs. The strategic splitting up of the characters provided opportunities for growth and development, such as Endeavor and Hawks stepping into their roles as top pro heroes. Various battles and conflicts were explored during this period, including ones that weren't initially set up, giving the supporting characters a chance to resolve their own feelings and stories.

While Deku is the main character of My Hero Academia, the series boasts a large cast of characters, many of whom still have unresolved character arcs. Chapter 348 set Deku off on a race to Shigaraki's location, effectively taking him out of the final battle for a good long while. This extended absence offered the series an opportunity for these arcs to be wrapped up.

My Hero Academia, a superhero manga by Kohei Horikoshi,...

10 My Hero Academia Characters Who Won the Most Fights
Image
Warning! Contains spoilers for the recent arcs of the My Hero Academia manga! In a series full of fights like My Hero Academia, it is only natural to ask which characters in the series have won the most battles. This is a bit more complicated a question than it first appears, given whether group battles or fights that happen off-screen should count. But if criteria are put in place to only include team battles and offscreen fights in the case of tiebreakers, then ranking heroes by the number of fights won becomes a lot easier.

Given My Hero Academia's incredibly large cast of characters, many heroes don't have more than 1 or 2 fights to their name. This makes sense as author Kohei Horikoshi can't possibly give these characters all the fights they deserve. But in the super-powered world of My Hero Academia fights are inevitable, so most heroes in the series,...

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: September 2023

It’s a deceptively big month on Prime Video in September! To kick things off, The Wheel of Time will be back for a second season on the service, while a live-action The Boys spinoff series called Gen V will be capping off the original series content later in the month.

But there are also some interesting new projects lined up between those two biggies. On September 15, Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in what is sure to be a delicious tale of revenge. Wilderness, based on B.E. You should also keep an eye out for Cassandro, landing on Prime Video on the same day. The film, which has been...

My Hero Academia's Most Outrageous Hero Has a Hilarious Real-World Origin
Image
Best Jeanist, the number three hero in My Hero Academia, has a bizarre real-world origin as a title given by the Japan Jeans Association. The Best Jeanist title is awarded to select celebrities and public figures who frequently wear denim, with winners voted by Japanese citizens. Best Jeanist has won the award a record-breaking eight times in a row, making him a Lifetime Best Jeanist and a representative of denim fabric.

The My Hero Academia series has a number of truly weird heroes, but one of the strangest, Best Jeanist, actually has a bizarre real world origin that's both fitting and hilarious.

Best Jeanist is the number three hero in My Hero Academia, just behind Endeavor and Hawks. His Quirk gives him control over fibers, and although it sounds silly, it's actually proven to be one of the strongest abilities in the series, time and time again. Aside from his Quirk,...

Neige Review: Juliet Berto and Jean-Henri Roger’s Moving Vision of Social Solidarity
Juliet Berto in Vladimir et Rosa (1971)
The recent retrospective of Juliet Berto’s acting work at the Brooklyn Academy of Music presents an artist who occupied the forefront of both formal and ideological reimaginings of the medium during her lifetime. An icon of the French New Wave for her roles in landmark films by Jacques Rivette and Jean-Luc Godard, she also regularly lent her presence to works of radical leftist filmmaking from directors such as Robert Kramer and Marin Karmitz. Neige, Berto’s 1981 directorial debut made in collaboration with her partner Jean-Henri Roger, bears the influence of these artists and synthesizes them into something entirely its own, a playful and unpretentious work that nonetheless retains a fierce political anger.

The title of the film—which translates to Snow in English—refers to heroin, the drug around which much of the plot revolves. Berto stars as Anita, a bartender in Paris’s racy Pigalle district whose committed...

Hangover Theater Guide to the 12 Days of Christmas
Gazing out upon the vast tapestry of Pajiban creeds and customs, I am certain that this time of year is feted is various ways. Whether you cherish Hannukah, Christmas, Ramadan, Yule, Kwanzaa, Decemberween or -- as my Jehovah's Witness friends call it -- Thursday, the holidays are about one thing: spending time with loved ones. This is usually accomplished in about 14 minutes. Then the rest of the time is spent caustically avoiding speaking to one another, drinking copious amounts of liquored nog, and remembering why you moved across the country and lost everyone's email address and phone numbers in the first place. Much of this awkwardness is spent sitting in some strange smelling house, a plate of half-eaten pie sitting in front of you, staring dully at a television while tuning out the mindless banter of distant aunts and uncles who are trying to figure out "why you aren't a...

Robin Wood obituary
Influential teacher, critic and pioneer in the field of film studies

'Why should we take Hitchcock seriously? It is a pity the question has to be raised. If the cinema were truly regarded as an autonomous art, not as a mere adjunct of the novel or the drama – if we were able yet to see films instead of mentally reducing them to literature – it would be unnecessary." The opening lines of the first book by the film critic and teacher Robin Wood, who has died at the age of 78, had a remarkable and lasting impact on the field of film studies both in and beyond academia.

Before he published Hitchcock's Films in 1965, there were – in English, as opposed to French – virtually no books on film directors, and few books of any kind that brought either rigour or sympathy to the analysis of popular cinema. The teaching of so-called "film appreciation...
