If you don't know about the Long Island-based B-movie studio Troma, it's time you learned. Founded by Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz in 1974, Troma began its life producing raunchy sex comedies like "The First Turn-On!," "Squeeze Play!," and "Waitress!" Kaufman and Herz would hit the big time in 1984 with the release of their film "The Toxic Avenger," which marked a turning point for the company. After the success of "Toxic Avenger," a twisted, low-budget superhero movie (with a soon-to-be-released remake!), the studio would skew more heavily toward horror-comedies, gore films, and splatstick humor. Troma would continue to make and/or distribute notable schlock staples for years, including "Class of Nuke 'Em High," "Surf Nazis Must Die," "Troma's War," "Rabid Grannies," "A Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell," "Sgt. Starring Elle O’Hara as the eponymous Cara – a young woman whose world is spiralling out of control. Haunted by her traumatic past, she lives with a mentally unstable roommate and struggles with a failed career as an online sex worker. Her father is unable to communicate, while her well-meaning mother offers little support. But above all, Cara is consumed by a terrifying belief that there’s a conspiracy to send her back to the harrowing institution.

With James Dreyfus, Laurence R. Harvey Michaela Longden, Julie Hannan and Johnny Vivash this jaw-dropping feature debut by writer-director Hewitt demands to be seen.

Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.

Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. There are many who fondly remember the low-budget Troma movie The Toxic Avenger and its sequels, and almost 40 years later we are getting one of the few remakes that may actually turn out to be a good thing. Writer and director of this new iteration of Toxie has now announced that filming has wrapped in Bulgaria on the movie and this is the kind of news that is easy to get excited about in these days of stop-start productions.

Being aware of the importance of quarantine to contain the spread of Covid-19, this film competition aims to encourage film production at home during these difficult times.

Submissions should be short films in the fantastic genre, and touch upon topics or themes related to the current pandemic.

April 7, 2011 (New York, NY) -  It was announced today by Tromadance director Jonathan Lees, that the Tromadance Film Festival (April 22-23, Asbury Park NJ) will feature guest panelists Michael Gingold (Managing Editor of Fangoria Magazine), cult animator John Goras (Chirpy), and legendary Queen of Independent Cinema, Debbie Rochon, along with Academy Award nominated animator Bill Plympton, and New York State Film Commissioner Pat Kaufman.  Special guest panelist and Tromadance founder, Lloyd Kaufman, will serve as moderator. 

The panel will be Selling Your Movie in the Age of Digital Revolution.  Now that the digital revolution has allowed all of us to make our own damn movies, how do we live off them in a media world controlled by giant conglomerates?
