First, you have the two queens of B movies here: Shannon Tweed and Adrienne Barbeau. You name the B movie and chances are one of them is in it (it also has Karen Waldron who was in one of the Tomato sequels is in this as the overly vacuous Bunny).
You also have a young, before-I-got-political Bill Maher. He's perfect as a stereotypical "man's man".
The plot is ridiculously silly and they know it. IF you just need a no-brains-needed laugh, this is for you.
"Apocalypse Now!" -- another movie based on 'Heart' -- was an incredibly powerful film. Better than the original book, in my estimation. 'Cannibal Women' is the opposite end of the spectrum... a total farce. And it's also better than the original.
So if you didn't like this movie, read "Heart of Darkness," then watch this again. It'll make more sense, and it'll certainly seem a heck of a lot funnier.
(Okay, after 'Heart' *anything* is funnier... but you get the idea.)
with a beginning like this, how much campier can it get?
apparently, very. this movie also contains truly the worst fencing scene i have ever witnessed. Bill Maher makes an appearance as the hapless last hope for male superiority in the jungle, although he really only serves as a vehicle for the movie's laughable commentary on the war of the sexes.
a gem of bad cinema. i highly recommend.
The chemistry between Shannon Tweed and Bill Maher is perfect--this is definitely Tweed's best performance anywhere, and Maher is perfect as a chauvinistic, directionally-challenged jungle guide. Karen Mistal, who has the thankless job of playing college student/mindless bimbo/aspiring feminist/aspiring cannibal woman, plays her role without flaw, as well. Only Adrienne Barbeau, in a cameo role, seems stiff. But somehow, even her performance works.
For a low-budget comedy, this film surprisingly packs a lot of laughs and even a message or two. Great fun.

- Blooper(at around 81 mins) In the scene at Malibu Estates, two hands are visible holding the "Cultural Assimilation: Piranha Women" sign in one of the shots. In another shot seconds later, the person holding the sign is gone.

Dr. Margo Hunt: Bunny, Bunny, you don't have to live your life to please me. The important thing is that you're happy. And as for what I've taught you, well, listen, I've always believed that every woman should get as much education and intellectual stimulation as possible, and that she should develop her mental abilities to their utmost potential. But in your case, well, there's just no point.
- Versioni alternativeThe first video release by Colourbox Video was cut by 16 seconds for a 15 certificate to remove a scene where a ninja uses nunchuks. At the time, the distributors were not allowed to release a video with the word 'cannibal' in the title - forcing them to change the title to 'Piranha Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death'. The 1999 video release by Metrodome Video was allowed to be called 'Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death' and was passed without cuts at the 12 certificate.
