Guillermo del Toro Calls This Shocking Free-to-Stream Classic Both “Brilliant” and “Twisted”
Image
Do you love a wacky horror comedy? We mean a really wacky horror comedy. If you answered with an enthusiastic ‘yes,’ we have a Guillermo del Toro-endorsed recommendation that may just be right up your alley. We’re talking about the oddball gore-fest Brain Damage. See directly below for the beloved filmmaker’s endorsement, which comes from a Tweet he sent out a few years back.

The Pacific Rim director is not kidding when he references the film’s twisted sensibilities. It’s about a psychedelic eel-esque monster that feeds on the lead character’s brain. And that’s really just scratching the surface.

The setup for this horror comedy goes as follows:

A young man called Brian discovers a disgusting parasite has attached itself to his brain stem. He becomes addicted to the hallucinogenic euphoria it produces, but in return, he must feed it human victims.

With that added narrative context,...

Drake Is Suing His Label Over ‘Not Like Us.’ Does He Have a Chance?
Image
Drake says Kendrick Lamar’s blockbuster hit “Not Like Us” crossed the line when it accused him of “one of the most vile behaviors imaginable” – being a criminal pedophile. Universal Music Group says Drake is the one who went too far when he sued his own label for defamation for distributing the Grammy-winning song.

“Plaintiff, one of the most successful recording artists of all time, lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated. Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be,...

Taking Poor ‘Carrie’ To Prom in De Palma’s 1976 Classic [Horror Queers Podcast]
Sophia Takal in Gabi on the Roof in July (2010)
Everything’s Coming Up Carrie!

January proved to be a busy, varied month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), tackled Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with Death Proof (listen), revisited George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen), then begged for Aylmer’s juice in Frank Henenlotter’s Brain Damage (listen).

To wrap up January, we’re taking Carrie White to prom in Brian De Palma‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s debut novel, Carrie. The classic film about telekinesis follows timid, bullied Carrie (Sissy Spacek) struggling to fit in at high school and get out from under the thumb of her overbearing religious mother (Piper Laurie).

Unexpected kindness arrives courtesy of popular girl Sue Snell (Amy Irving), who volunteers her boyfriend Tommy (William Katt) to take Carrie to prom.

Begging for Aylmer’s Juice in ‘Brain Damage’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Sophia Takal in Gabi on the Roof in July (2010)
Beg For My Juice

Trace and I have had another wild month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), then crossed off Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with a discussion of Death Proof (listen). After tackling George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen) to tie in to Leigh Whannell’s new film, we’re sucking the juice out of our very first Frank Henenlotter film with 1988’s Brain Damage.

In the film, Brian (Rick Hearst) discovers a parasite named Aylmer (voiced by John Zacherle) has attached itself to his brain stem. Brian becomes addicted to the psychedelic euphoria Aylmer’s blue “juice” gives him, but in return, the slug demands to be fed human victims.

As his (ex) girlfriend Barbara (Jennifer Lowry) and brother Mike (Gordon MacDonald...

Foggy Nights and Daddy Issues in ‘The Wolf Man’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Into the Dark (2018)
Fog fetish.

After concluding 2024 with a look at toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen) and kicking off 2025 by concluding the Grindhouse double feature that we started last summer with a look at Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof (listen) we’re heading back to the world of Universal Monsters in George Waggner‘s 1941 classic The Wolf Man.

In The Wolf Man, Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney Jr.) returns to Wales to reconcile with his father (Claude Rains) after his brother’s death. While there, he puts the moves on Gwen (Evelyn Ankers), the shopkeeper of a nearby antique shop. The night after he purchases a silver walking cane from Gwen, Larry is attacked and bitten by a vicious wolf, which he then kills. Larry eventually learns that the wolf he killed was, in fact, a man (Bela Lugosi), and that Larry has now inherited a curse...

Frankenhooker (1990) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
There are certain types of media that could have only come from one person. Something so specific and out there that only a beautiful, twisted mind like director Frank Henenlotter could have conjured it. Today, we’re talking about one of those movies. A movie that answered a question we’ve all asked at some point in our lives… ”What if Frankenstein were a hooker?” This is the story of what happened to Frankenhooker.

Director Frank Henenlotter hit the streets of New York City for his follow up to Brain Damage and Basket Case with a hankering for something different this time around. His newest film would stay in and around the horror genre of course but would lean further into the comedy aspect of his writing prowess. The idea of which came from an improvisation that took place at a pitch meeting for an entirely different film. According to Henenlotter,...

Eminem’s Love-Hate Relationship With Late Mother Debbie Nelson: How It Shaped His Music Over The Years
Image
Eminem Reflects On Relationship With Mother (Photo Credit – YouTube/Facebook)

Eminem’s mother, Debbie Nelson, died of lung cancer. Since his major-label debut, The Slim Shady LP, Eminem has often spoken about his difficult upbringing and complicated feelings about his mother. He continued featuring his mother in his rap music over the years, which led to a few responses from Debbie Nelson herself, including legal action and a memoir.

Eminem was at his most caustic in “Cleaning Out My Closet.” However, he’d become more apologetic and conciliatory by the time of The Marshall Mathers LP2.

Read on to find out how Eminem’s love-hate relationship with his mother featured in his music.

Brain Damage (1988) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
These days the horror genre is one of the only ways to get a thoughtful, original story made in Hollywood. But believe it or not, there were those who used to be ashamed to take part in the genre. Basket Case and Frankenhooker director Frank Henenlotter was never one of those people. He basked in it. And though it may not be his most famous film, the film we’re going to cover today might be his grossest, funnest, and most thought provoking of all them. Featuring heavy drug references, a phallic parasite, and a scene so twisted it made some of the crew walk off the set. This is what happened to Brain Damage.

Seasoned 80s horror fans and monster movie aficionados may look back at Basket Case as a decently known cult commodity. Not enough so at the time that its director, Frank Henenlotter was given a huge budget for his next production.

Here’s Why General Hospital’s Rick Hearst Worried About Eating A Cookie
Image
Before General Hospital‘s Rick Hearst ever starred in a daytime soap, he kicked off his career as the lead in a horror movie. Yes, before he was Scotty Banning on Days of Our Lives and Alan-Michael Spaulding on Guiding Light, he was Brian in a horror flick called Brain Damage. Brian and Brain — you see what they did there? Anyway, the movie was about a young man who wakes up to find that he has a disgusting little creature attached to his brain stem. Yikes.

Just Desserts

The 1988 film served as Hearst’s debut acting role. And last weekend, the Emmy-winning actor appeared at a horror convention in Houston, Texas, where he celebrated the cult classic about a talking parasite with fans. Hearst also celebrated the 35-year-old flick with cookies. Designed by @cakesbyjennifer210, the delicious dessert featured the actor’s face.

Hearst posted about the sweet, surreal situation on his Instagram account,...

The creature feature, at its most basic, is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role as the primary antagonist; the term says it all. It’s the creature part that’s loose for interpretation, of course. A creature feature could be anything from carnivorous aliens from space to manmade monsters to genetically altered animals run amok.

This week’s streaming picks highlight creature features from the glorious age of practical effects: the ’80s. These five horror titles run the gamut in tone, style, and creature, showcasing just how nebulous and varied the creature feature can be. Whether you’re in the mood for quirky parasites with personality or lust that turns monstrous, these ’80s creature features go big on practical effects. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Basket Case (1982)
To celebrate the release of Basket Case on Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray available from 29th April, we have a Limited Edition 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray to give away to a lucky winner!

The feature debut of director Frank Henenlotter, 1982’s Basket Case is a riotous and blood-spattered “midnight movie” experience, now presented for the first time ever on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray.

Duane Bradley seems like a pretty ordinary guy. His formerly conjoined twin Belial, on the other hand, is a deformed creature who lives in a wicker basket. Arriving in the Big Apple and taking up a room at a seedy hotel, the pair set about hunting down and butchering the surgeons responsible for their separation.

Filmed on a shoestring budget against the backdrop of 1980s New York (where it played on the midnight movie circuit for over two-and-a-half years), Basket Case has clawed its way from...

‘Bad Biology’ 4K Uhd Review
Image
Stars: Charlee Danielson, Anthony Sneed, Remedy, Tom Kohut, James Shell, Vivian Sanchez, R.A. The Rugged Man, Ginger Starr, J-Zone | Written and Directed by Frank Henenlotter

Director Frank Henenlotter is a cult horror legend. But after making the cult classics Basket Case, Brain Damage, Basket Case 2, Frankenhooker and finally, Basket Case 3, he disappeared. After 17 years in 2008, he returned and made another film, the black comedy (kinda) body horror Bad Biology. And now, almost another 17 years later again, Bad Biology is getting a 4K Uhd release from Severin Films.

Bad Biology, like the director’s previous work, is not a movie you’ll easily forget:

Driven by biological excess, a man and a woman search for sexual fulfilment, unaware of each other’s existence. Unfortunately, they eventually meet, and the bonding of these two very unusual human beings ends in a god awful love story.

That description only scratches the...

Pink Floyd Release The Dark Side of the Moon (50th Anniversary Remaster)
Image
Pink Floyd have released a remaster of their magnum opus The Dark Side of the Moon, out now via Pink Floyd/Warner Music.

The polished-up edition of the album was originally released back in March with The Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary Box Set, but this is the first time that the standalone Dark Side remaster is available on its own. Pressed on vinyl, CD, and Blu-ray formats, the physical package comes equipped with postcards, stickers, and a 24-page booklet commemorating the record, which Consequence recently crowned one of the greatest albums of all time.

Notably, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side remaster arrives just a week after embattled ex-member Roger Waters shared The Dark Side of the Moon Redux, a track-by-track re-recording of the album on his own terms. He teased it with some — ahem — interesting versions of “Time” and “Money.”

Roger Waters Unveils Complete Re-Recording of The Dark Side of the Moon: Stream

Controversial artist Roger Waters is back with a controversial new release: a re-recording of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, made without the involvement of any of the other members of Pink Floyd. Listen to The Dark Side of the Moon Redux below via Apple Music or Spotify.

Beyond giving Waters the opportunity to one-up his estranged bandmates, re-recording one of the most famous albums of all time appeared to give the artist a chance to update its message for modern times, with a matured perspective. “The original Dark Side of the Moon feels in some ways like the lament of an elder being on the human condition,” Waters said in a statement. “But Dave [Gilmour], Rick [Wright], Nick [Mason], and I were so young when we made it, and when you look at the world around us, clearly the message hasn’t stuck. The Gooey Horror Movie That Was Perfectly Timed for the '80s Cocaine Era
Image
Frank Henenlotter's 1988 cult classic Brain Damage is a wonderfully transgressive allegory with a wicked sense of humor that irreverently tackles both addiction and being in the closet. '80s horror was chockfull of films that explored taboo topics and the moral scruples of the time, from mainstream sequels like A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 and the Friday the 13th to those on the margins of the genre such as Re-Animator and Videodrome. Just like in the 1950s, cinema in the 1980s responded to the repressed and conservative social mores of the time with some of the most boundary-pushing genre films that have since become classics.

‘Shaky Shivers’ Director Sung Kang on Celebrating ’80s Practical Effects and Falling for Horror Fandom [Interview]
Image
Actor Sung Kang is most widely known for playing fan-favorite Han in the Fast & Furious franchise, among other roles outside of horror, including a voice role in Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon. That he chose gateway horror Shaky Shivers for his feature directorial debut might seem unconventional. However, after speaking with the filmmaker, the charming tale of friendship among zombies and cryptids quickly reveals itself as the perfect vehicle for his debut.

Shaky Shivers stars Brooke Markham (In the Dark) and VyVy Nguyen (The Sympathizer) as Lucy and Karen, best friends grappling with a potential werewolf curse. With snobby customers, zombies, cryptids, and more, the friends have their hands full this summer.

With Shaky Shivers releasing in theaters for one-night-only on September 21 from Fathom Events, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Kang about his first outing in the director’s seat; specifically, why the actor-turned-director chose this horror-comedy script.

Pearl Jam Perform Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” for the First Time in 13 Years: Watch
Image
If Pearl Jam’s surprise-filled setlist from the opening show of their 2023 tour didn’t already suggest a special run was incoming, they confirmed it on night two with a bust-out of Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” for the first time since 2010.

On Saturday, Pearl Jam hosted their second consecutive concert at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota and delivered the long-dormant cover mid-set. As Vedder began to play the song’s opening notes, he laughed and said offhandedly “I’m losing my mind,” but gathered himself up quite well to perform a haunting, solo rendition before leading into the band’s 2002 single, “I Am Mine.” Watch fan-captured footage of “Brain Damage” below.

Elsewhere in the set, the band dusted off 2006’s “Severed Hand” and 2009’s “Got Some,” both for the first time in five years. They also covered Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down” and...

Roger Waters Previews The Dark Side of the Moon With Strange Re-Recording with “Money”: Stream
Image
Roger Waters, would rather re-record old Pink Floyd music than reunite with the band’s surviving members for a new tour. As such, on October 6th he’ll release his solo re-recording of the band’s seminal 1973 album The Dark Side of the Moon. Today, he’s previewing (Roger’s Version) with the album’s lead single, his version of “Money.”

Waters produced the LP, titled The Dark Side of the Moon Redux along with Gus Seyffert, and recorded the tracks with a studio band comprising Seyffert, Joey Waronker, Jonathan Wilson, Johnny Shepherd, and Jon Carin. Notably, the other members of Pink Floyd who helped to create the original, including David Gilmour and Nick Mason, do not appear on the recordings.

“The original Dark Side of the Moon feels in some ways like the lament of an elder being on the human condition,” Waters said in a statement. “But Dave,...

Basket Case 3 (1991) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The Basket Case 3 episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

One of the quintessential drive in kinda guys to me is Frank Henenlotter. Not only because of the anointing from the patron saint of Drive-ins himself, Joe Bob Briggs, but also just from a horror core memory. Long before I knew about the fabled 42nd Street in New York and all the magical movies that were shown there, I was introduced to Belial and his brother Duane on grainy VHS from Video Unlimited. That’s the magical part about being a horror fan. My brothers weren’t even particularly fond of the first movie, but knew it was an important piece of independent horror cinema. Shot for 35,000 and released in April of 1982, Basket Case is now enshrined in Moma,...

“A Life of Light and Pleasure” – Frank Henenlotter’s ‘Brain Damage’ Turns 35
Image
After more than three decades, Frank Henenlotter’s putrid parable for drug addiction hits harder than ever with tons of self-aware bite.

“Splatstick” is an exaggerated horror subgenre that explores grotesque gore that’s so over the top that it begins to border on the point of comedy. Sam Raimi, Peter Jackson, and even more contemporary voices in horror like Sion Sono or Terrifier’s Damien Leone are names that are often associated with this bold, bloody genre. Frank Henenlotter is a pivotal name in splatstick low-budget indie horror whose work often goes overlooked, despite its decidedly more outlandish energy. Henenlotter’s greatest claim to fame is his Basket Case trilogy, but it’s Brain Damage that’s actually the deepest film in his oeuvre.

All of Henenlotter’s horror films have very obvious analogues and they aren’t especially deep in their subtext, but there’s still subtext all the same.

Pink Floyd and The Many Myths About The Wizard of Oz and 2001: A Space Odyssey
Image
Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon was announced in 1973 at a press conference held at the London Planetarium, a spectral site which mirrored the album cover’s beam of light refracted through a triangle into a rainbow. Perhaps the iconic prismatic image provided the initial idea for fans to sync the classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939) to the album’s rock soundscape.

The band’s history with movies is vast and varied. They scored films in the aftermath of the demise and departure of the band’s founder, Syd Barrett. The success of Dark Side of the Moon also helped the group become motion picture producers, investing in the 1975 comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Wall, directed by Alan Parker and starring Bob Geldof, pushed boundaries and redefined a rock opera on film. And while the bassist/vocalist/songwriter Roger Waters didn’t let Stanley Kubrick...

The Tragic Backstory Of Basket Case's Belial Explained
Image
Here's the backstory of Basket Case villain Belial explained. Basket Case is a 1982 horror movie by director Frank Henenlotter, who is known for mixing gore with pitch-black humor. Most of Henenlotter's work from the '80s like Brain Damage were shot in New York and made use of some of the city's grimier locations. Basket Case itself is easily Henenlotter's most famous - or infamous - movie and follows two brothers out for revenge.

Basket Case's concept - which seemingly helped inspire James Wan's Malignant twist - and its more controversial sequences helped give it a reputation among horror fans. While Henenlotter tried to get other kinds of movies made following its release, distributors kept demanding a sequel - despite the movie's fairly conclusive ending. Henenlotter gave in and shot both Basket Case 2 and Basket Case 3: The Progeny in quick succession. While the former is considered a worthy follow-up,...

Image
The upcoming “Clone High” reboot is headed to HBO Max, which will also host a slew of new and returning adult animated television shows.

WarnerMedia announced HBO Max had ordered two seasons of “Clone High,” a third season of “Close Enough,” as well as two new original series titled “Velma” and “Fired on Mars” during a virtual panel at the Television Critics Association 2021 Winter Press Tour. The titles will significantly bulk up HBO Max’s slate of adult animated shows, which have become increasingly popular on streaming services in recent years.

The “Clone High” reboot has been expected. MTV announced that it was rebooting the cult hit comedy series in July 2020, though a distributor wasn’t announced at the time. The original show centered on a high school populated by famous historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, and Gandhi and was lauded as one of the greatest...

Velma Scooby-Doo Prequel Series Is Coming to HBO Max from Mindy Kaling
Image
Mindy Kaling is teaming up with HBO Max to develop an animated series about Velma from Scooby-Doo. The show has been given a straight-to-series order by the streamer along with multiple other adult animated series. Kaling is on board to executive produce the series in addition to providing the voice of Velma in the Scooby-Doo spinoff.

Although it's inspired by a popular children's cartoon series, Velma is described as an "adult-focused" animated comedy, suggesting the show will likely be developed for more mature Scooby-Doo fans. The series serves as an origin story of the "bespectacled and underappreciated brain in the Scooby gang," offering a look at the "complex and colorful past of one of Scooby-Doo's beloved mystery solvers."

Velma stems from an overall deal between Mindy Kaling and Warner Bros. TV to produce multiple original shows for the studio. Executive producing Velma alongside Kaling are longtime collaborator Charlie Grandy, 3 Arts' Howard Klein,...

Which Supporting Actress Oscar nominees had more screen time than the nominated leads?
Image
Two years after John Ireland (“All the King’s Men”) became the first supporting Oscar nominee to deliver a longer performance than a lead nominee from the same film (Broderick Crawford) in 1949, Kim Hunter (“A Streetcar Named Desire”) did the same versus Marlon Brando. Since then, nine more Best Supporting Actress nominees have had higher screen time totals than a co-star nominated in a lead rce. Here is a look at each instance, in order from lowest screen time difference to highest.

1961: Mary Ure (“Sons and Lovers”) – 21 minutes, 4 seconds

0 minutes, 50 seconds over Trevor Howard

Although she is absent from nearly all of the first half of “Sons and Lovers,” Ure still manages to appear in over 20% of the film. Up to that point, less than half of all Best Supporting Actress-nominated performances had reached that mark. Howard’s performance, on the other hand, did not reach that percentage, but he received a lead nomination regardless.

What is the Song in the Dune Trailer?
Denis Villeneuve
There’s no shortage of amazing stuff in the first trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, the much anticipated new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel. While the film has been brought to the screen once before, in the hands of David Lynch (who infamously took his name off it in favor of the pseudonymous Alan Smithee), the beloved book has never been given a truly faithful adaptation.

From the looks of that trailer, that’s going to change in Villenueve’s capable hands. Here’s that trailer in case you haven’t seen it yet…

Now, about that mysterious chanting that then reveals itself as a song…

What you’re hearing is a brand new Hans Zimmer arrangement of Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse” which is the final song on their famed Dark Side of the Moon album. “Eclipse” is almost never heard without its partner song, “Brain Damage...

Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Guerre stellari (1977)
Every Movie And TV Show Headed To Disney+ In April 2020
Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, and Kenny Baker in Guerre stellari (1977)
Though it’s yet to launch in the UK and other parts of Europe, Disney+ has already proven itself to be a major player in North America – thanks in large part to its suite of digital content, which ranges from Marvel Studios to Star Wars and everything in between.

And much like its online peers, Disney+ is still to roll out a fresh wave of content for April 2020, beginning with Doctor Dolittle on April 1st – not to be confused with the recent remake starring McU mainstay Robert Downey Jr.

What’s more, April marks Earth Month, so you can expect plenty of eco-friendly documentaries to air via National Geographic. Indeed, it’s fair to say that the Disney+ lineup has fast become one of the most diverse on the market. From new episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to age-old classics like Doctor Dolittle, there’s really something for everyone.
