I truly loved this series back in the late '80s when it was shown in syndication here in the US. The acting was superb, the show was totally believable and historically accurate. I remember thinking how fortunate I was to have been born in the 20th century; watching this series gave one a real sense of just how difficult were the lives of those who immigrated to Canada and the American west in the early 19th century. I fear people just aren't that tough and hardy anymore! I would love to own all the episodes on DVD if they ever become available and, failing that, would really enjoy watching episodes online if I could find them. Malcolm Stoddard was dream material for me back in the '80s. Heck, he still is!! What an amazing series this was; something Canada can still be proud of! They don't make series television like this anymore-not in this country, anyway!
I loved this show when I first saw it. I taped as many of the episodes as I could and I still have them to watch whenever I want to. Though I do with they would be released on DVD as my copies are not the best.
I do know that the information listed on this page, as to how many episodes there were and how many episodes people appeared in, is wrong but I don't know the correct information so I can't submit a correction... all I know is that I have about 75 episodes on tape with no repeats.
If anybody knows of a site that has more information, specifically more correct information, on this show I would love to know about it.

When I first saw this program, I knew this took place in the 19th Century and they used the words "THE WAR" and "Yankees" a lot. So I knew they were referring to a war against the Yankees but being an American, I thought this occurred after the American Civil War. (Remember even today in the South, Northerners are referred to as Yankees.) But then I noticed the clothing, styles, and even weapons were more akin to the early 19th Century than the later period. So then I realized this took place in Canada and the War was the War of 1812. I still found it intriguing. I knew York was the old name for Toronto and that there was still concern that the US would attempt to annex Canada (just as there was still fear in the US that Britain would still attempt to reconquer the US). But overall it was fun to watch as it helped me to understand Canadians further.
To me, this is one of the best shows ever. I'm sad that it wasn't on longer & that I wasn't able to catch the original run through in its entirety due to being away at college, where there wasn't cable. However, I'm now able to see all the episodes & it's renewed my enjoyment of the show.
This series featured some of Canada's best acting talent and was a real showcase for them.
This show is historically accurate as well and really brought to light many of the things that pioneers had to go through in Canada's harsh, yet beautiful, landscape. It also brought forth that, despite some people holding on to class, people worked together and, eventually, most people realised that we're all the same and that we're all equal.
I really like how the show treated all people, no matter their creed, race or what-have-you, the same. No one was prejudiced against, and stereotypes were done away with.
This show is something that everyone can enjoy, a true family show, and that is truly lacking these days. If I was able to get DVDs of this show, it's one that I would most definitely spend my money on.

This was a wonderful show; educational, entertaining, lively, well-acted, and one you could easily watch alone or with your whole family.
The basic premise concerned a scottish family who emigrated to Canada during the early 1800's. The characters were sympathetic and well-rounded; the episodes were well-written and interesting, with just the right dashes of occasional humor, suprise or suspense, etc.
The Campbells was one of the major bright spots for me during the 80's and I've been hoping for years that the show will come out on tape. If and when it does, I would strongly recommend it to anyone as a worthwhile viewing experience.
