Mystery movies have been around since the very early days of cinema, and are still incredibly popular today. For over a century, audiences have loved watching as a mystery unfolds onscreen. After all, it is difficult to resist a film that allows the viewer to feel like an active participant, getting roped into the story and trying to solve the crime before the characters onscreen. The best mysteries, though, are often the ones that the viewers are unable to solve on their own. These movies keep their audiences guessing until the last moment.

While filmmakers have been making mystery movies for generations upon generations, few eras have been quite as exciting for the genre as the 1980s. This decade featured an onslaught of well-executed mysteries covering a wide range of topics. With films ranging from silly whodunits to dark, serious investigations, the '80s promised something for all sorts of mystery lovers.

Based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula as well as an Irish legend, the upcoming vampire movie Feed has begun production ahead of the American Film Market next week, Deadline reports.

From director Marco van Belle (Mercy), the upcoming vampire movie Feed is being shot in Ireland. Fitting, given that the film is inspired by the Irish myth of the Dearg Due.

According to Wikipedia (linked above), “Dearg-due, an Irish name meaning ‘red bloodsucker,’ is a female demon that seduces men and then drains them of their blood.”

“The film follows a group of twenty something social media influencers who spend a weekend at a remote contemporary house in an Irish forest, and must fight for their lives when they awaken the world’s original vampire from her slumber.”

Grace Collender (Fréwaka) stars alongside Clinton Liberty, Daisy Jelley, Niamh Hogan, Rhys Mannion and Oskar Smith.

Marco van Belle’s Irish female vampire origin feature Feed has begun shooting in Ireland’s coastal region of County Wexford, which also recently hosted the shoot of Small Things like These, as Metro International Entertainment continues sales at AFM.

The film follows a group of twenty something social media influencers who spend a weekend at a remote contemporary house in an Irish forest, and must fight for their lives when they awaken the world’s original vampire from her slumber. Van Belle previously wrote sci-fi Mercy starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Annabelle Wallis, which is currently in post-production.

It gathers an ensemble cast of emerging Irish and UK talent, including Grace Collender (Fréwaka), Clinton Liberty Daisy Jelley, Niamh Hogan, Rhys Mannion and Oskar Smith.

Feed takes its cue from the Irish myth of the Dearg Due, which also inspired Irish writer Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.

Writer and director Van Belle previously wrote sci-fi Mercy starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Annabelle Wallis, which is currently in post-production.

Will Machin, Sam Parker and Michael Yates are Executive Producers for Metro International Entertainment who are handling international sales and will launch the film to buyers at the AFM.

Much like Jaws, Star Wars and Mad Max before it, the success of 1979’s Alien prompted studios and producers the world over to make their own hastily-made rip-off movies. While the screenplay for the blockbuster 1979 science fiction horror film Alien is solely credited to Dan OBannon, with OBannon sharing a story credit with executive producer Ronald Shusett, the Alien script was also guided by the influence of several other important creative collaborators. OBannons original Alien script was extensively rewritten by producers David Giler and Walter Hill, who introduced the villainous android Ash, while artist Ron Cobb conceived the idea of the films titular creature having acidic blood. Of course, its hard to imagine that the Alien franchise would be nearly as expansive and successful as it is today without the twisted vision of artist H.R. Giger, whose original creature design revolutionized the horror and science fiction genres alongside Alien.

We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story picks up with a 12-year-old Robert being sent to theatre camp getting attention from girls and being complimented by talk show host Steve Allen. That, especially the female attention, pointed him toward his career. And really, what better motivation can a young man have?

Best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Robert Englund already had a long history in the genre. dating back to Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive in 1976. Who could forget his entrance announcing “My name’s Buck, and I’m here to fuck!” and the criminally underrated Dead and Buried in 1981 as well as Galaxy of Terror and a host of others. And it’s continued well past his time as Freddy, most recently doing voice acting in the bizarre puppet film Abruptio.

A while back, the CBS All Access streaming service was rebooted and rebranded as Paramount Plus. Since then, the latest Paranormal Activity sequel was released directly to Paramount Plus, and in the not-too-distant future, a Pet Sematary prequel will be on there as well. It won’t be one and done for Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. HBO Max officially announced they’ve renewed the drama for a second season less than a month after the season one finale aired.

The 10-episode first season debuted on July 28, 2022 and starred Bailee Madison, Chandler Kinney, Zaria, Malia Pyles, Maia Reficco, Mallory Bechtel, Sharon Leal, Elena Goode, Eric Johnson, Alex Aiono, and Lea Salonga. The renewal announcement didn’t confirm who will be returning or when we can expect the second season to arrive.

Executive producer/writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and co-executive producer/writer Lindsay Calhoon Bring created the series, based on Sara Shepard’s bestselling book series.

Hey everyone! We have one last batch of horror and sci-fi home media releases headed our way before the end of the month, and this week’s offerings are massive, with well over 20 titles coming out on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD this Tuesday alone.

One of my favorite creature features ever is getting some love in HD finally, with Scream Factory’s 4K release of Lewis Teague’s Alligator (and its sequel is headed to Blu-ray this week as well), and the horror comedy Dead Heat is also getting a 4K upgrade. For all you giallo fans out there, Forgotten Gialli: Volume 3 is being released tomorrow and features three more Italian classics genre fans are going to want to own, and Severin Films is keeping busy with a ton of titles this week too: Bloody Pit of Horror, Black Candles, Night of the Demon, and The Halfway House.

Do you feel that chill in the air? Winter has once again descended to encase us in her cold, deathly embrace. But, of course, winter does not come alone. She brings with her a golem made from the very snow she produces to freeze us down to our bones. This avatar mocks us by shaping itself in a distorted facsimile of the human form cobbled together with coal, carrots, and despair. I refer, of course, to the snowman, the ultimate bodhisattva of the season of death.

Human beings often try to make sense of life’s horrors through story, and in the late ’90s not one, but two films dared plunge the depths of the uncanny dread induced by snowmen. And such was the terrifying nature of both films that they each earned the title Jack Frost.

Exploitation films were thriving in the ‘70s, and everything was excess. Why have one naked woman when you could have four, or settle for one onscreen flaying when clearly several are in order? Maybe watching Mansion of the Doomed (1976) you’d be content with a single case of eye transplant surgery instead of the six offered? Well, you’d be wrong. This is a film that leans heavy on the nihilism and nastiness of the times, with nary an existential answer yet plenty to talk about.

Doomed seems to be the key word in the title that permeates nearly every frame; other titles include Eyes, Massacre Mansion, and The Terror of Dr. Chaney, with the latter perhaps being the most apropos considering the moral dilemma lies completely on his shoulders. But Mansion of the Doomed works because, well, that mansion is packed with the doomed, protags and antags alike.

Out on August 13 in North America from Scream Factory comes Gary Sherman's 1982 film Vice Squad. Filmed on the streets of Los Angeles, Sherman directs Season Hubley as Princess, a prostitute who wants a better life for herself and her daughter. However, there's a sicko on the loose (like any day or night in L.A.), and Gary Swanson, plays Tom Walsh, a cop that wants to nab Ramrod, a vicious pimp, for his crimes against women. Walsh ropes in Princess as bait, and we're off to the races. Of course, there are twists and turns, and perversions of justice, so Ramrod's released...

I’d stop reviewing possession flicks if they had ever stopped making them; well, I’m sure I’ll run out of good ones eventually, but today is not that day. The Possessed (1977) hit the small screen in the wake of demonic giants as a pilot for a series that never took off. What a shame - imagine if we had a Devil of the Week show terrorizing the youth of North America? But TV is littered with the also-rans, and this one is top notch hellfire.

Originally broadcast Sunday, May 1st as a segment of NBC’s The Big Event, The Possessed was up against ABC’s Sunday Night Movie and CBS’ Switch/Delvecchio. Obviously it didn’t generate enough interest to go to series, which is a damn shame because it’s teed up in very intriguing ways.

This early gore-horror picture has a remarkable emphasis on human values, believe it or not, with a ‘monster’ that nevertheless is a paragon of loving gentleness. Add Donald Pleasance as a surly, posh-hating police inspector, and the shock value makes the Hammer films of the early ’70s taste like weak tea.

British horror was still going through a transitional phase by the early ‘70s. Trying to turn people’s perception away from cobweb strewn castles and fog laden swamps, they played in the modern day with such classics as Tales from the Crypt, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, The Vault of Horror, Theatre of Blood, and Asylum. (Okay, those are either anthologies or Vincent Price films, but there are many other goodies as well.) So strong was the vibe that an American made the leap across the pond for his directorial debut, Raw Meat Aka Death Line (1972), a grimy, funny, and surprisingly poignant first effort from Gary Sherman (Dead and Buried).

Released in England in ’72 under the original Death Line title, it would take until September of ’73 to be unleashed on American soil by Aip under its better known moniker. Critics were decidedly mixed on Raw Meat; Roger Ebert considered it a “good debut” for Sherman,...

It’s hard to believe that the same year George A. Romero released Day of the Dead, the ultra-gory, ultra-bleak conclusion of the trilogy he began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, writer/director Dan O’Bannon was spinning Romero’s original classic into a totally new direction with The Return of the Living Dead. Whereas Romero’s film is dark and sober, Return is pure punk rock anarchy—a horror comedy that successfully manages to be equal parts horror and comedy while introducing one of the most significant elements into the zombie mythos since Romero first made them flesh-eaters 17 years earlier.

The film’s ingenious premise—which was “meta” before being meta was really a thing—is that the events of the original Night of the Living Dead really did take place and were covered up, with the zombies locked into airtight drums and left in the basement of a medical supply facility.

Dead and Buried: Fraser’s Sumptuously Filmed, Familiar Revenge Drama

Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and snagging the distinction of representing New Zealand as the official best foreign language selection in 2014, Toa Fraser’s The Dead Lands is the first film to be shot entirely in the Maori language and to be told entirely from their character perspective (and not in their relation to white characters). That the narrative is entirely derivative, and with a brutality that will put one, peripherally, in mind of Apocalypto (yes, that Mel Gibson about the Mayans) is sometimes easy to overlook considering the film’s vibrant palette. But as well intentioned as these honorable characterizations are intended in Glenn Strandring’s script, on film they are shapeless archetypes of good vs. evil in an endless cycle of violence brought to a wishful thinker’s fantastical resolution.

The24 producers from Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand will participate in the fifth edition of the networking platform, which runs Sept 3-6 during the Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 4-14).

I remember not long after it was released, one of my friends bought me Dark Souls for my birthday. It wasn’t a game I’d heard very much about, and so was intrigued as to how good a game I’d been given. No more than an hour into the game I was starting to think I was the victim of some cruel joke my friend had played, and yet, something about Dark Souls kept me going back to it.
