The trailer for the long-awaited Red Sonja movie just dropped, so now seems like the perfect time to dive a bit deeper into the iconic She-Devil with a Sword's decades-long history in comics. In Fantasy comics, Red Sonja is likely surpassed in fame only by Conan the Barbarian himself. Much like Conan has a history in comic books that goes back decades, Red Sonja has been a comic book icon since the '70s, often as an ally of Conan.
Despite the association with Conan and Robert E. Howard's Hyborian setting, Red Sonja, at least in her iconic comic book iteration, isn't actually a Robert E. Howard creation. There is a clear influence owed to female fighter in Howard's 1934 historical war story The Shadow of the Vulture by the name of Red Sonya (note the different spelling) of Rogatino, to the point that Dynamite does credit Howard as a co-creator of the character.

Take a look at more footage from the new “Red Sonja" live-action feature, directed by M.J. Bassett ("Solomon Kane"), based on Robert E. Howard's character 'Red Sonya of Rogatino', reimagined in 1973 by writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics, stars Matilda Lutz, Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El Feitury and Katrina Durden, releasing August 15, 2025 in theaters:
Originally, Robert E. Howard's 'Sonya of Rugantino', was a female pirate from the 16th century…
…debuting in Howard's short story "The Shadow of the Vulture" in "Magic Carpet" magazine (1934).
Writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith reworked the character in 1973, for Marvel Comics "Conan the Barbarian #23, transposing the timeline to Howard's 'Hyborian Age'.
"...'Red Sonja' lives with her family in a humble house in the 'Western Hyrkanian' steppes. When she is 21, a group of mercenaries kills her family and burns down their house.

If you love movies, TV, sci-fi and fantasy, you're gonna have a busy summer. The final season of Squid Game already came and west. We're in the middle of The Sandman. Jurassic World Rebirth opened last weekend, Superman opens this weekend, and The Fantastic Four movie won't be far behind. Murderbot, Foundation, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds...I could go on.
And that's just July. Now, new trailers give us an idea of what we might be watching in August, starting with a look at the second season of Twisted Metal, coming to Peacock on July 31. Take a look below:
Turning video games into movies and TV shows is all the rage lately, but Sony's Twisted Metal games, wherein players roll around in souped-up death mobiles trying to knock each other off the road, always seemed like an odd choice. But the trailer looks pretty fun!

The She-Devil With a Sword has finally returned. Red Sonja, the long-awaited reboot of the classic fantasy comic book character, is coming back to the big screen this summer. In the new trailer for the film, Matilda Lutz plays the flame-haired barbarian warrior as she seeks vengeance, battles monsters, and confronts death in a gladiatorial arena. M.J. Bassett (Rogue) directs the film, which had been stuck in development hell for decades. The film will premiere in theaters on August 15, 2025.
In the trailer, Sonja swears revenge on the raiders who killed her people, sending her on a quest that eventually lands her in the clutches of the villainous warlord Draygan The Magnificent and pitted against his deadly, eyebrow-less bride, Dark Annisia. In a nod to the character's fantasy origins, she battles not only Draygan's warriors, but also a massive horned monster. Red Sonja is finally making her big return, and this time, she’s slicing her way through blood, fire, and myth. After years of production delays and director shakeups, fans now have their first real look at the upcoming fantasy action film thanks to the first official trailer, released by Samuel Goldwyn Films.
The trailer opens with a brutal scene: a massacre that leaves Red Sonja thirsting for revenge. She’s captured, but if the trailer makes one thing clear, it’s that nothing is going to stop her from getting even.
She’s seen fighting her way through enemies in an arena, decked out in her iconic chainmail bikini. The trailer ends with a quick joke, but most of the footage is serious and intense.

It had been so long since we had any updates on the Red Sonja reboot that a lot of fans had given up hope of ever seeing the movie, but we got word that the project had found a US distributor in Samuel Goldwyn Films back in March, and the first official trailer has now been released (via EW).
The teaser finds the She-Devil with a Sword (Revenge star Matilda Lutz) captured by the ruthless Dragan (Robert Sheehan) and forced to fight in a gladiatorial-style arena. Sonja manages to escape, and joins forces with a group of fellow warriors to seek vengeance against Dragan and his wife, Dark Annisia (Wallis Day).
There's plenty of bloody action, some fantastical creatures (brought to life with surprisingly decent CGI), and Sonja's infamous chain-mail bikini even makes an appearance - though not with her in it!

The upcoming “Red Sonja" live-action feature, directed by M.J. Bassett ("Solomon Kane"), based on Robert E. Howard's character 'Red Sonya of Rogatino', reimagined in 1973 by writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics, stars Matilda Lutz, Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Eliza Matengu, Manal El Feitury and Katrina Durden:
Originally, Robert E. Howard's 'Sonya of Rugantino', was a female pirate from the 16th century, debuting in Howard's short story "The Shadow of the Vulture" in "Magic Carpet" magazine (1934).
Writer Roy Thomas and illustrator Barry Windsor-Smith reworked the character in 1973, for Marvel Comics "Conan the Barbarian #23, transposing the timeline to Howard's 'Hyborian Age'.

A reboot of Red Sonja spent nearly fifteen years in development hell before going into production in 2022 with director M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) at the helm. Before Bassett signed on, the project had passed through the hands of directors Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway, with Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard being considered for the lead role. Matilda Lutz ended up starring in the film, and while we still don’t know when we’ll get to see her version of the title character in action, the long-delayed movie has taken a step forward, earning its rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board! “The Pitt” is a medical drama from the studio behind “ER,” the producer behind “ER,” and centered on one of the signature stars of “ER.” But it’s not “ER.” Sure, it may or may not have begun its life as an attempt to reboot “ER,” but the show in its current form has nothing to do with “ER.” Except it’s set in an emergency room.
That’s the puzzle of contradictions one must work through when attempting to unpack the new drama from Max.
“ER,” created by the late Michael Crichton, spent 15 seasons tracking the lives of various physicians (including superstar-in-waiting George Clooney as heartthrob Dr. Doug Ross) traipsing through the emergency room at Chicago’s County General. By contrast, “The Pitt,” from producer John Wells and creator R. Scott Gemmill, spends its 15-episode first season chronicling a single shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center in downtown Pittsburgh.

Red Sonja Leaked Footage Gives Us A First Look At Matilda Lutz In Action As The Flame-Haired Warrior
Aside from an initial promo image and a behind-the-scenes photo, we haven't seen very much from Millennium Films' Red Sonja reboot, but some snippets of footage from the movie have now leaked online.
Though it's only a few seconds long, the clip shows Revenge star Matilda Lutz in full costume as the She-Devil with a Sword as she does battle against a horde of ferocious foes. Right at the end, we also catch a glimpse of some kind of horned reptilian-looking monster in chains.
As you can see, Lutz's armour is pretty faithful to the later comic book depictions of the character (the skimpy chain-mail bikini was never gonna happen), and she also appears to be sporting Sonja's signature face-paint.
After over a decade spent attempting to get the project moving with multiple writers and directors attached at various different stages, Millennium finally managed to put its Red Sonja reboot...

While web-slinging and acrobatics are cool, I've always believed that Spider-Man stories are defined by their heart and the personal moments that Peter shares with friends and foes alike. One of Marvel’s most talented writers, Gail Simone, the true Queen of Heart, is interested in giving Spider-Man her fair shot. At a time when Peter Parker is once again at his lowest, Simone is the perfect pick to write Marvel’s next Spider-Man series.
Simone is one of the most prominent writers in the comics industry, spearheading series such as Wonder Woman, Red Sonja, and Birds of Prey. Her current ongoing series, Uncanny X-Men with artist David Marquez, has quickly become one of my personal favorite X-Men series and one of the franchise’s most empathetic series in years.

Fantasy is a hard nut to crack. Where science fiction can build on the rust and chrome of worlds we know, fantasy asks us to envision something new, often helped along by tidbits of real world history (as many fans of George R.R. Martin know quite well). To bring these worlds to life on screen requires more magic than words on a page, making the special effects budget blow the king's purse wide open.
When it works, it's something special. We get to see impossible worlds, meet cultures and countries where the riddle of steel and the law of chivalry thrive. We take to skies full of dragons, and sandy deserts full of bandits. Of this grand niche, the sword and sorcery movie is the most approachable, with a down to earth ruffian flair. The distinction between this and high fantasy is slim, but for our purposes, if the world...

There have been so many great fantasy movies over the years that never received the box office love they deserved. As a genre that relies on viewers letting themselves be swept away by alternative worlds and stories of magical wonder, sometimes it takes a while for the value of a fantasy story to be recognized by viewers, and it is only years or decades later that a fantasy film takes its rightful place as a cult classic. Other times, movies that should have been great were handled badly, and subpar films were released that didnt reach their full potential.
Some of the biggest box office flops of all time were in the fantasy genre, as this was a style that can feel overly campy and needlessly self-important if not presented well. Its a fine line to walk, and while the best fantasy movies ever have pulled this off well, other...

It would have been laughable to think, back in the 1980s, that Marvel Comics would ever become a major player in the movie industry even with the rising popularity of DC Comics' movie properties Superman and Batman jumping to the Silver Screen in the '70s and '80s. Back then, Marvel Comics wasn't exactly a movie-making powerhouse, with their only licensing efforts by then being the black-and-white Captain America serials in 1944, then, four decades later, selling the Red Sonja comic for a 1985 film that spun off Conan the Barbarian.
