The Red Sonja reboot has received an action-packed trailer as it attempts to reinvigorate the character after her disastrous 1980s outing. Starring Revenge actor Matilda Lutz as the titular sword-swinging warrior from the Hyborian Age, this latest attempt at bringing the popular comic character to life follows on from the 1985 box office disaster starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The trailer for the long-awaited Red Sonja movie just dropped, so now seems like the perfect time to dive a bit deeper into the iconic She-Devil with a Sword's decades-long history in comics. In Fantasy comics, Red Sonja is likely surpassed in fame only by Conan the Barbarian himself. Much like Conan has a history in comic books that goes back decades, Red Sonja has been a comic book icon since the '70s, often as an ally of Conan.

Despite the association with Conan and Robert E. Howard's Hyborian setting, Red Sonja, at least in her iconic comic book iteration, isn't actually a Robert E. Howard creation. There is a clear influence owed to female fighter in Howard's 1934 historical war story The Shadow of the Vulture by the name of Red Sonya (note the different spelling) of Rogatino, to the point that Dynamite does credit Howard as a co-creator of the character.

It had been so long since we had any updates on the Red Sonja reboot that a lot of fans had given up hope of ever seeing the movie, but we got word that the project had found a US distributor in Samuel Goldwyn Films back in March, and the first official trailer has now been released (via EW).

The teaser finds the She-Devil with a Sword (Revenge star Matilda Lutz) captured by the ruthless Dragan (Robert Sheehan) and forced to fight in a gladiatorial-style arena. Sonja manages to escape, and joins forces with a group of fellow warriors to seek vengeance against Dragan and his wife, Dark Annisia (Wallis Day).

There's plenty of bloody action, some fantastical creatures (brought to life with surprisingly decent CGI), and Sonja's infamous chain-mail bikini even makes an appearance - though not with her in it!

“Sovereign,” the crime thriller starring Nick Offerman (“Parks & Recreation”) and Jacob Tremblay (“Room”), has been acquired by Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland.

The film, written and directed by Christian Swegal in his feature film debut, follows an anti-government fanatic and his son who venture across the country while constantly finding themselves on the wrong side of the law. It’s loosely based on real-life events surrounding the West Memphis police shootings in 2020 and recently had it world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The comic book character Red Sonja is headed back to the big screen with a new movie from U.S. distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films, and the film’s MPA rating has arrived.

The Red Sonja movie is rated “R” for “Strong/bloody violence.”

Millennium’s new take on comic book character Red Sonja has gone through a few different iterations over the years, but the reboot is finally much closer to release. After a two-year post-production period, Red Sonja is finally gearing up for a UK release.

Signature Entertainment has picked up UK and Irish rights to the action fantasy with plans to release this year. Deadline notes that the film previously sold in international markets, though no updates on international release plans as of yet.

The Red Sonja reboot has secured a distributor with a release window confirmed. That's great news for fans of the comics and sword-and-sandal films.

Signature Entertainment acquired the rights to release the Red Sonja reboot in the UK and Ireland. Per Deadline, the film will premiere in late 2025 after spending two years in post-production. "Red Sonja epitomizes the kind of film we're looking for at Signature – an epic story in a fantasy-laden world with a strong commercial feel to its execution, which made it immediately appealing to us," Signature Entertainment's Acquisitions Manager Begüm Kayacan Parodi said. "We're looking forward to introducing UK and Irish audiences to Matilda Lutz's sword-swinging huntress later this year." Production company Millennium Media is still looking for a distributor for Red Sonja in international markets.

Marvel Comics’ classic showcase series, Marvel Feature, first hit shelves in the 1970s as a testing ground for new characters and ideas. Running for twelve issues starting in 1971, it helped launch The Defenders and Marvel Two-in-One.

Another spin-off, Marvel Double Feature, started in 1973 and featured reprints of Tales of Suspense with different Marvel characters like Captain America, Iron Man, and later Black Panther. Now, Disney’s Marvel Press Book Group is reviving Marvel Double Feature with new stories, BleedingCool reports. Aside from an initial promo image and a behind-the-scenes photo, we haven't seen very much from Millennium Films' Red Sonja reboot, but some snippets of footage from the movie have now leaked online.

Though it's only a few seconds long, the clip shows Revenge star Matilda Lutz in full costume as the She-Devil with a Sword as she does battle against a horde of ferocious foes. Right at the end, we also catch a glimpse of some kind of horned reptilian-looking monster in chains.

As you can see, Lutz's armour is pretty faithful to the later comic book depictions of the character (the skimpy chain-mail bikini was never gonna happen), and she also appears to be sporting Sonja's signature face-paint.

After over a decade spent attempting to get the project moving with multiple writers and directors attached at various different stages, Millennium finally managed to put its Red Sonja reboot...

Red Sonja has become an iconic character in comic book and fantasy culture. She is known for her strength, independence, and warrior spirit, often serving as a symbol of empowerment, especially for female characters in action genres.

It would have been laughable to think, back in the 1980s, that Marvel Comics would ever become a major player in the movie industry even with the rising popularity of DC Comics' movie properties Superman and Batman jumping to the Silver Screen in the '70s and '80s.
