The city of Brussels already has a more vivid big-screen legacy than some but it may have found its closest, most devoted and most expansive cinematic chronicler in director Bas Devos. Following the superb 2019 one-two of “Hellhole” and “Ghost Tropic” — respectively, a solemn reflection on urban alienation in the wake of terror attacks and a revelatory nocturnal commute through its unloved fringes — the Belgian capital gets a more summery, sanguine valentine in “Here,” albeit one still preoccupied with the city’s outsiders and outlying attractions. In this case, it’s Brussels’ proximity to the natural world, whether via its parks or communal gardens or overgrown riverbanks, that fascinates Devos — and his two non-native characters, who connect over the unexamined riches of their immediate environment.

Polish filmmaker Bartosz M. Kowalski, known for his works ‘Hellhole’ and ‘Nobody Sleeps in the Woods Tonight’, is gearing up to thrill audiences with his latest horror fantasy film, ‘Night Silence’.

The recently released teaser of the film takes viewers into the eerie confines of a nursing home where monsters begin to prowl, reminiscent of the haunting atmosphere in Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.

North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. Chinese sales agent Rediance has acquired worldwide rights to Belgian filmmaker Bas Devos’ untitled new film, which started filming last Friday (May 20).

Set in Brussels, the film revolves around a potential love story between a Romanian construction worker and a Belgian-Chinese doctorate student of moss, who cross paths just before the former is about to move back home.

Rediance’s Beijing-based CEO Xie Meng visited Brussels to close the deal with the filmmakers while on his way to Cannes. The Chinese company previously handled Devos’ Ghost Tropic, which premiered at Cannes in Directors’ Fortnight...

Exclusive: After relaunching its film division last October, Castle Rock Entertainment has set a first project out of the gate that will have a familiar ring. It’s Spinal Tap II, a sequel to the fabled rock mockumentary that set the film company on a run of hits, many of them directed by Rob Reiner. He made his directorial debut on the 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap.

Reiner will direct the sequel and return as filmmaker Marty Dibergi. Also back are David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), the nucleus of England’s loudest and sauciest heavy metal band.

Morgan Neville’s company Tremolo Productions is officially in production of an untitled Andy Kaufman documentary alongside Josh and Benny Safdie’s Elara Pictures. The Emmy-nominated Alex Braverman will direct the feature-length film.

“No matter how many times I watch Andy Kaufman’s work, I feel like I’m seeing a magic trick for the very first time,” Braverman said. “I’m excited for our project to honor that. This is the film I’ve wanted to make my entire life.”

The Safdie brothers will executive produce the project alongside Rick Rubin and Braverman’s father Chuck Braverman, who produced Kaufman’s 1980 special “Andy Kaufman Plays Carnegie Hall.” Wavelength founder and CEO Jennifer Westphal also will executive produce.

Nine films and nine series among streamer’s latest Polish commissions.

Netflix has unveiled a slate of 18 titles that it has greenlit in Poland, spanning nine films and nine series.

News of the commissions comes just weeks after the streamer announced it is opening an office in the country’s capital of Warsaw later this year, which will function as a central hub for Netflix’s Central and Eastern Europe (Cee) productions.

Netflix has previously enjoyed success with Polish erotic thriller 365 Days, which was a top 10 hit for the streamer in over 90 countries.

Netflix has revealed a slate of nine films and nine series that it has commissioned in Poland. Scroll down for the full list.

The series include Detective Forst, from noted Polish writer Remigiusz Mroz, which revolves around a crime-solving journey across the Polish Tatra Mountains. Jakub Żulczyk’s novel Feedback is also being adapted for a series starring Arkadiusz Jakubik, which will be helmed by Leszek Dawid.

On the film side, Anna Szczypczyńska’s romance novel Tonight You Are Sleeping With Me will be adapted for a feature helmed by Robert Wichrowski, while the famed Polish novel Mr. Car & The Knights Templar is also getting the film treatment, with Rafał Skalski directing and Matylda damięcka, Lena Góra, and Aleksandra Domańska starring.

“The Diam Diam Era Too,” the sequel to current release “The Diam Diam Era” by Singapore superstar Jack Neo, and period thriller “Precious is the Night” are among the upcoming releases from regional mini-conglomerate MM2 Entertainment.

The company revealed a host of titles for 2020-21 release at the ongoing Asian Television Forum, which is part of the Singapore Media Festival.

The “Diam Diam” films continue the story of Neo’s 2016 two-parter “Long Long Time Ago” that followed the Lim family against the backdrop of Singapore’s nation-building policies. “The Diam Diam Era Too” is set for a Lunar New Year release in early 2021. The cast includes Richie Koh, Danny Lee and Mark Lee.

In This is Spinal Tap, Nigel Tufnel, the lead guitarist of the world’s loudest rock band, surprises the film’s director, Marty Dibergi, with a delicate piano composition that seems far removed from the heavy-metal sludge of songs like Hell Hole, Sex Farm, and Big Bottom. Nigel refers to it as a “Mach” piece – a fusion of Mozart and Bach – and intends it as part of a musical trilogy in D minor, which he calls “the saddest of all keys”. Dibergi thinks the piece is beautiful and asked him what it’s called. Nigel stops chewing his gum momentarily and deadpans: “Oh, this piece is called Lick My Love Pump.”

After landing on our radar with his impressive debut Violet, which won Best Feature Film at Berlinale, Belgian director Bas Devos returned to the festival circuit last year with not one, but two new features, Hellhole and Ghost Tropic. The latter, which follows a nocturnal journey of a Maghrebi cleaning woman living in Brussels, is now set to arrive in Virtual Cinemas at the end of the month courtesy of Cinema Guild. We’re pleased to exclusively debut the U.S. trailer, which introduces the 16mm-shot drama with snapshots of a few striking sequences from the film.

Rory O’Connor said in his review from Marrakech last year, “The quiet power of Saadia Bentaïeb’s performance is the key to Devos’ third feature. The actress is perhaps better known in theatre circles, although keen-eyed viewers might recognize her from bit parts in Bpm, Based on a True Story, and Bertrand Bornello’s latest film Zombi Child.

We’re now entering the end of the summer movie season and it continues to be an unprecedented era in the world of film. Smaller-scale movies got a bigger spotlight than usual, with distributors finding success in drive-ins and on digital platforms while all tentpoles continued to get delayed. We’ll have to wait and see if Warner Bros. will go ahead with plans to release Christopher Nolan’s Tenet first in the international territories who have a handle on the pandemic, and then in the U.S. next month.

Premiering one film at Berlin and another at Cannes all in one year would already be quite the feather-in-the-cap for any rising young filmmaker, but “Hellhole” and “Ghost Tropic” director Bas Devos took it one step further by making the latter project in the period between the two festivals.

“It was a peculiar year to say the least,” says Devos with a laugh. “When I was in Berlin this year [to promote “Hellhole”], I was somewhat distracted because I knew that once I got back home I would almost immediately start shooting the next one.”

Dutch Features has secured international distribution rights to three films aimed at pre-teen audiences: “Contained,” “Lilith & the Ghastly Brothers” and “Sihja” ahead of the Warsaw Kids Film Forum, which opens Wednesday.

Directed by Marja Pyykkö, “Sihja” is an adventure film about a cheeky fairy and an eccentric boy who each have to overcome their fears in order to save nature itself. “Sihja” is being produced by Finland’s Tuffi Films, the Netherlands’ Windmill Film and Norway’s Den Siste Skilling. Now in production, the film will be released in late 2020.

“Lilith & the Ghastly Brothers,” the debut feature of Michael and Andrew Van Ostade, is a fantasy adventure film set in a world of ghosts and ghouls. The film is currently in pre-production and will be produced by Belgium’s Minds Meet (“Hellhole”).

Bas Devos’ Ghost Tropic is premiering in Directors Fortnight, while Tian Zhuangzhuang’s The Horse Thief is in Cannes Classics.

Beijing-based sales agent Rediance has picked up international rights to Tian Zhuangzuang’s classic drama The Horse Thief, which is screening in Cannes Classics, and Bas Devos’ Ghost Tropic, selected for Directors’ Fortnight.

Tian’s 1986 classic is being presented by Xi’an Film Studio and China Film Archive, with the latter organisation financing and over-seeing a 4K digital restoration. The Tibetan-language film tells the story of a tribesman who is sent into exile after he steals a horse to support his family.

Xinjiang-set “A First Farewell” was named the best film in the Chinese section of the Hong Kong International Film Festival’s Firebird awards competition for young film makers. Montenegro-based Ivan Salatic’s “You Have the Night’ won the equivalent award in the rest of the world section.

Prizes were awarded at a ceremony on Sunday evening. The festival, which gou underway on March 18, draws to a close on Monday night.

The kind of drama such a bombastic title suggests is scrupulously avoided in Belgian director Bas Devos’ heavy-lidded “Hellhole,” an uncannily beautiful but forbiddingly remote exercise in sculptural, sepulchral filmmaking. Even the reference, to then-candidate Donald Trump’s use of the word to describe the city of Brussels, through which the film prowls, has been superseded by so much Trumpian bluster since that non-Belgians may find themselves struggling to make the connection. And the connection is itself vaguely confusing, because while Devos’ love for his city does pulse up from beneath the Teflon camerawork, the mournfulness of his portrait of a sleepwalking citizenry still low-level reeling from the 2016 Brussels terror attacks undercuts any potential irony. This may not be a vision of hell, but it sure feels like purgatory.

This year’s Berlinale is full of features from filmmakers all around that world that have Dutch producers on board. Some are documentaries, some are dramas, but each one has a Dutch imprint. Geoffrey Macnab from The Independent reports.

Monos, directed by Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos, is screening both in Sundance and Berlin. This is a kidnap drama involving child soldiers set deep in the Colombian jungle. Amsterdam-based Lemming Film discovered the project at CineMart in 2016. “We were immediately drawn by the premise of the project and of course by directors Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos, whose work so far has been really impressive,” says Lemming’s CEO Leontine Petit.

Variety’s “10 Europeans to Watch” were feted at a party held by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg at Berlin’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel Saturday. Kirsten Niehuus and Helge Jürgens, managing directors of Medienboard, the regional film, TV and digital-media funding body, were the co-hosts for the evening, which attracted 2,000 party-goers.

Prolific Belgian director Bas Devos is to begin production later this month on his third feature, Night Palace, in Brussels.

The film is produced by 1080films, Minds Meet and Quetzalcoatl, with Saadia Bentaieb, Maaike Neuville and Nora Dari heading the cast. Devos revealed details of the project here in Berlin where his second feature, Hellhole, is screening in Panorama.

Variety has unveiled its fifth edition of 10 Europeans to Watch, spotlighting 10 rising talents from across the continent who are poised for breakthroughs in 2019. The selection includes emerging actors, directors, showrunners and cinematographers from six countries whose dynamic talents are being showcased on screens big and small, and on both sides of the camera.

The group will be feted at the upcoming Berlin Intl. Film Festival with a luncheon in partnership with Dr. Hauschka at the Gorki Apartments on Feb. 9, and at the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg party that evening at the Ritz-Carlton.

A sanitarium with a sinister staff and a family with a hairy (and scary) dilemma will get the high-def treatment on July 26th with the respective Blu-ray releases of 1985’s Hellhole (being distributed on a Blu-ray / DVD combo pack) and 1973’s The Boy Who Cried Werewolf. With summer heating up, Scream Factory has revealed the final list of special features for each film, as well as another look at the previously revealed cover art:

Hellhole: From Scream Factory: “Look what’s back! The 1985 women-in-sanitarium/prison horror hybrid Hellhole is finally slated for a release on July 26th.

Hollywood is just a trash bin full of chiseled bone structure. Aaron Eckardt, Ben Affleck, and of course Michael Douglas and his dad Kirk are all known for their strong jawlines. But cult actor Robert Z’Dar made those guys look like pikers with his mammoth chin, which he exploited to perfection with a string of nasty villain roles that were B-movie heaven. A Chicago native, Z’Dar is probably best know for starring as Matt Cordell in a trio of Maniac Cop films between 1988 and 1993, but his imposing mug graced over 121 films over the past 30 years.

Those credits include such gems as Hellhole, Beastmaster 2, Tango And Cash (he played “Face”), and the amazing Samurai Cop (he was filming the belated sequel to that one when he died). Sometimes the titles Scream Factory puts out have you saying, “I didn’t see that coming.” Like Friday’s Facebook announcement that 1985's mostly forgotten Hellhole will get a Blu-ray/DVD special edition later this year. Not only have I never seen this one, I totally forgot it even exists.

So what’s Hellhole about again? According to IMDb:

An unlucky woman's mother is murdered by a scarf-wielding killer named Silk, leaving the woman injured, traumatized, and suffering from amnesia. She's committed to a mental institution, where Silk follows her, looking for the papers he was trying to get from her mother.
