"The River Rat" is very much like a ghost story - not too much depth, but plenty of adventure and cheap thrills to keep you interested. The acting is generally good. Tommy Lee Jones and Brian Dennehy are reliable as ever, if Dennehy's character is a good bit too over-the-top. It was interesting to see Martha Plimpton so young, playing a role very much reminiscent of one she did three years later in "Shy People".

This is the only film both written and directed by Thomas Rickman. It's easy to see why. Not to say that the script is necessarily bad - the dialogue is clever, and the characters are fleshed out for the most part. The main weakness is the schizophrenic overall quality of the story he's trying to tell. When he sticks to real life and family drama, it works. When he tries to turn it into a thriller, everything comes crashing down. In theory, Rickman could have filmed it in a way that brought things together, but he tends to direct in a very unrestrained sort of way, lacking the ingenuity to really pull it off.

I liked "The River Rat" mainly for it's nice visual feel, and the occasional sense of reality that pushed through the lazier aspects of production. There's a lot of ways it could have been improved, but it makes for good low expectation entertainment. A fun little movie.

When convicted felon Billy McCain gets paroled from the big house, his troubles are far from over. A sinister man wants to get his hands on the stash that Billy supposedly hid away before doing his stint in the gray bar hotel. Is the money there or was it destroyed before Billy ever got caught? Can Billy and his daughter escape the clutches of this evil person and live happily ever after? Will Mighty Mouse never come!!?? An entertaining tale of a father (Tommy Lee Jones) and daughter (Martha Plimpton) who run a bait/fishing shop on a river. They build a fishing boat together and is christened "The River Rat". The father is meanwhile harassed by his parole officer for information due to the father being the only survivor of a childhood crime involving a large sum of lost money. The father served time but the money was never recovered. After some history and character building has taken place, the movie transforms into a coming of age story combined with a competitive treasure hunt.

Jonsy is a pre-teen girl who lives by the Mississippi river with her grandmother. When her father Billy is released early from prison she tries to become close to him. However when Doc emerges from Billy's past looking for the money he stole things become more urgent.

This is essentially the story of a father and daughter trying to bond after never being together. The story may take a more sinister turn as Doc takes them on a river journey to find the stolen money, but it's still a family drama for the most part. The family drama is well observed with good characters - only the boy Wexel comes across as a slight Southern stereotype. However Doc's introduction doesn't take away from this side, rather it adds a darker level involving murder, revenge and eventual redemption. But over all this it works as a nice, non-sentimental relationship drama.

The film is the one that gave Martha Plimpton to the world and, while that may not be a good thing, she is good here - a child actress that isn't annoying. Also a pre-fame Tommy Lee Jones gives a strong performance as Billy who is slowly won over by fatherly concern for his daughter. Also giving a good show is Brian Dennehy (long before he started specialising in TV movies about crooked cops), here his bad guy slowly develops a tragic feel about him - just as his poison ivy wounds develop more to entrap him.

The film is a clever relationship drama with a grisly edge to it. It's worth watching for it's simplicity and for it's good performances. Don't expect a masterpiece but it's a refreshing little drama.

Inquisitive teen Jonsy (Martha Plimpton) and her grandma live in a riverside bait shop. Her father Billy (Tommy Lee Jones) is newly released from prison and presumed to be the only one who knows the location of a stolen loot. She has never met him. She is rebuilding a river boat called River Rat. Prison psychiatrist Doc Cole (Brian Dennehy) controls Billy's release.

This is Martha Plimpton's first lead role in a theatrical release. She has her intrinsic powerful voice. It is a bit raw, but it is undeniable. She also has some great co-stars. Jones is being the grumpy silent type. Dennehy is a villain walking the line between sinister and cartoonish. Thomas Rickman is using the southern allure of the river like Huckleberry Finn. He even uses creole in the last act. As the director, he does struggle to take it to the next level. It feels very 80's and his cinematic style is quite there.

"The River Rat" is too good a movie to lie in a corner without comment. Good grief, this was Martha Plimpton's first major role. For that reason alone it has a place in motion picture history. What a terrific talent, and what great contributions she has made to the art in roles both small and large. In this movie she combines with such recognized stars as Tommy Lee Jones and Brian Dennehy, and takes a back seat to neither. Her father-daughter scenes with Mr. Jones are warm and real. The depth all three of the lead actors brought to their characters was truly remarkable. In sum, the beautiful background of the mighty Mississippi River, an interesting story, some great acting turns, and, of course, Martha Plimpton make "The River Rat" a must-see picture.

Inquisitive teenage girl in the modern-day South--selling fish with her grandmother out of their house on the river--forges a friendship with the father she's never known, just out of jail after 13 years. As the paroled ex-con who killed a man during a robbery, Tommy Lee Jones adds some hot-tempered fuel to these otherwise juiceless proceedings. Jones, playing the kind of loner who thaws out quickly, overcomes the manufactured grit and sentiment in this script and manages to give an interesting performance. Debuting director Tom Rickman, who also wrote the cliché-ridden screenplay, allows many of the supporting players to overact mercilessly, while newcomer Martha Plimpton is used as the picture's 'noble conscience' (never a good idea). Rickman has little faith in the family audience he's targeting, even having Plimpton's tomboyish Jonsy declare that she "ain't no lezzy" so viewers can relax knowing this is an assembly-line piece of sub-Disney and not anything more ambitious. The riverfront milieu is attractive, but the hick stereotypes and shady city-folk are enough to try anyone's patience. *1/2 from ****

Tender story about a father and daughter. I wish TLJ would go back to making these quiet little movies instead of barking his way through mainstream action flix. Martha Plimpton is wonderful; it's too bad she doesn't do anything anymore.

I was lucky to be able to watch a lot of the production of River Rat. Several scenes were filmed on the Ohio River at Smithland, Ky, where I lived and also operated the local ambulance service. My Father was a Deputy Sheriff and became very friendly with Tommy Lee Jones during the filming. I also had the honor of having breakfast with Mr. Jones.

Smithland was also the location of most of the "Rivers" segments of the classic movie " How The West was Won ". I still have cast photos and autographs from Jimmy Stewart, Agnes Morehead, George Peppard and Debbie Reynolds from that movie. " The River Rat " was and in my opinion is a great movie.

It's a shame that this movie has not made it to DVD. The 3 main characters are well cast and developed. I like the sensitive handling of the father's attempts to build a relationship with a daughter he has never known. Dennehy, whom I have seldom seen playing a villain, seems almost an incarnation of pure evil (shades of Cape Fear).

I hope that,over time,it will get the recognition it deserves. It is an interesting example of a well-made film that isn't trying to be a blockbuster and shows the interesting alternative side to American film making.

Great settings and a good soundtrack which I would like to have been able to purchase. It looks like a portrait of a way of life, with its close association with living on and beside the river, that has probably disappeared now. A simple tale,well told.

I was only 2 years old when this movie was made but I watched a few years later then I understood it, probably the reason I like this movie because it was made here in my home state of Kentucky, but thats not the main reason I like this movie, I also like it because its got action and Drama in it, I love action and drama movies. If any of you are big fans of Tommy Lee Jones then you should see this movie because it is one of his best.

Three people intentionally rob a house. A murder occurs during the robbery. Tons of money is stolen. One of the three later dies, and the other two deny responsibility.

One of the remaining two decides to dig up the stolen money, all the while denying any responsibility. Even after confessing to his daughter, he continues to deny. Luckily, his daughter is also psycho, and she joins in with the denial.

For no apparent reason, the underage actors get nekkid in various scenes.

Along the way, the innocent murderer encounters people who are much worse than he is. You know they are worse then him because they also want the money that he got from his robbery/murder.

Eventually, the innocent murderer becomes a grave robber because way back when he didn't do anything wrong, he hid the money in a casket.

Overall, a heartwarming story of innocent people who aren't responsible for the murders, death, robberies and other crimes that they committed.
